Until Price hones the other facets of his game, I think he remains in the role that he has. Price has shown to be a bit of a liability in pass protection and hasn't shown himself to be a weapon in the passing game. This staff, like the one before them, generally goes with the most complete back for their every down guy. Williams is that guy once Love is gone, unless Price improves on those areas he's struggled in. People love a home runner hitter, but I'm usually spot on with this stuff. This goes back to before when everyone loved Greg Bryant (RIP) and didn't understand why Cam McDaniel was getting the lion's share of snaps over him and GA III. Then people didn't understand why Josh Adams was getting most of the snaps over Dexter Williams. Theo Riddick over Cierre Wood. Kyren Williams over Chris Tyree. Tony Jones Jr. Etc. There's a clear pattern.
Price is good in small doses. He's not as consistent as Love or Williams, and as mentioned above he's missed some blocks in pass pro and hasn't shown to be a receiving weapon out of the backfield. In the run game he has a tendency to kick it outside if the hole isn't there right away. Sometimes it works for a big gain. More often than not it leads to nothing. I did a whole breakdown of his season in another thread, but you can see this in a number of games last year, starting with the A&M game. He had 8 carries for a respectable 44 yards and 5.5 YPC, but then you consider his big run of 47 yards and without that he's 7 carries for -3 yards. Feast or famine. Conversely Love was 14 carries for 91 yards. You take away his big run of 29 yards and he's still getting 4.7 YPC.
At 4.7 YPC you're still being very effective as a runner. On the other hand, getting 0 or negative yards on most of your carries puts your offense in a hole, it doesn't matter if you break a big one on the 8th carry if you're causing multiple drives to stall with your first 7 carries. Now, during the Spring Game they said one of the things Price has been working on is being patient and letting the play develop, hopefully that rings true and we can see more consistency from him instead of constantly bouncing outside and getting stuffed more often than not.
