I'm beginning to think that Tommy's problem as a (college) coach is that he is a great playcaller but struggles to develop talent. Every single year, the narrative is about how Rees "calls a great game given what he had on the roster." Well now he's at freaking Alabama with one of the most talented rosters ever (per 247 team talent) and we are still talking about how he had to overcome roster flaws.
their oline did look like it was in shambles most of the game. would you put it on Tommy in year 1 that they are starting a true frosh at LT?
I would consider that a roster flaw that isn't related to his doing.
I think overall everyone wants things to be very black and white with who is to blame and its rarely that. A lot of decisions and circumstances in the long term and short term make things what they are.
I believe you can point to the improvement that Milroe and the offense made from first part of the year to the end of the year as successful coaching and development of players and I think you can point to some of the flaws that existed at the end on things pre tommy and things related to Tommy.
There is always a healthy discussion on development of players outside a coordinators direct position group as well. As the OC, yes you are in charge of all offense, but how much of oline development falls on the OC/QB coach feet?
Overall, there are quite a few here that would blame Tommy for Saban catching a cold and it's probably not a logical debate that will be had.
Will be interesting to follow the next season or two. Milroe is primed to be a Heisman candidate or fall flat on his face.
