This is exactly the issue. Every school recruiting against is can clip these interviews and articles and be like “ND doesn’t want you making money.” Just an incredibly myopic move by the admin.

I’m not sure why they felt compelled to go on the record and put this out there. What could they possibly have hoped to gain from this?

I don’t disagree with them at all, but they should be pr savvy enough to understand that the CFB journos who cover the sport roast anything that isn’t 100% all in for pay for play. WTF did they think a NY Times Op Ed would do? Did they think people would rally around this?

They’ve done it multiple times already. Just go the way of the Ivy League and be done with it. Would have more respect for them than the way they currently approach the program.

Baker is going to be much better than Emmert, and I actually think he's correct here. There needs to be federal regulation the same as there is federal regulation for thousands of other things (finance, cars, labor, foods, etc.)... this isn't complicated and, at its core, has nothing to do with "politicians".

Baker is also correct that the biggest issue right now is the lying and predatory "offers" some NIL groups are giving to kids as enticements. The Jaden Rashada thing was ridiculous.

That is the way Swarbrick and Jenkins should have approached it. Hard to argue with that.

Until the schools, presidents, and ADs start talking about collective bargaining, everything else is just window dressing.

It is unclear to me why the schools are so vehemently opposed to collective bargaining, beyond the usual reasons why companies don't like unions, I guess. Loss of control.

They act like it's impossible to consider, but there are lots of schools where grad student teaching assistants and the like are unionized. There are even a few schools where dorm RAs (undergrads) are unionized. A union for student-athletes doesn't seem like it would need to be all that different?

Agree on Baker, by the way. I live in Massachusetts and watched him for the last eight years. He's a very practical and pragmatic sort, basically a straight shooter, as politicians go. And really not a creature of Washington at all. I think he'll be good (whether anyone can actually fix college sports is a different question. But he's a good one to try.)

I can tell you why they're opposed...money. It's a lot easier to run a business when you can pay your labor fixed, below market rates.

Jack Swarbrick was on the "College Football Enquirer" Podcast from last Thursday discussing his Op Ed. I just had time to listen to it and he does touch on this subject.

If you have The Athletic, check out the article about U of Cinci and their new NIL deal with a local brewing company. With all of us Cincinnatians and our German heritage, this will do very well…

A federal clearinghouse for NIL that authenticates deals would be a seismic shift in favor of Notre Dame relative to the current status quo… assuming that deals which are “booster collective gives cash straight to player” are prohibited.
