Never had the feeling Parker and Freeman were as enamored with Buchner as Rees. I was never a big fan of Buchner’s “skill set” as others either.
That would make sense for several reasons. Tommy (and Kelly) wanted him, not them. Tommy was invested in making Tyler succeed for his own resume sake. Tommy had more on the line with TB.

If TB does go to bama, Lord help Tommy and Tyler or they're going to get ran out with pitchforks.

I think it's pretty clear that if Buchner were to start at Bama and fail that it would almost certainly cost Rees his job because he's the new guy AND he's the guy that brought in Buchner. So there'd be nowhere to point the finger besides at Tommy.

Now if Buchner went to Bama and dominated that's the better thought experiment. How would people feel about Rees and Buchner then? We really don't know what Buchner has to offer because we saw him get so few starts.
not sure qbs get many starts when they pretty much throw a pick 6 every game they play significantly in.

My point is, at pretty much every school with this many pick 6's, if there's any descent QB room he would have played himself to the bench.

If he does in fact head to Alabama and play for Tommy Turncoat I feel like he'll do okay. Tommy wants to and has the guys to pound the ball. All TB will have to do is hit the play action layups. He certainly wont be asked to go out and win them a game. That said is that what's best for TB and his career?

He's not coming back to ND, btw.

Good thing Tyler isn’t accurate.

I disagree with the perspective that Freeman should burn bridges with players who want to leave or test the waters. That’s not the era we are living in with the portal and NIL, and Pandora’s box has long been opened. It’s the smart money for Freeman to do that. In fact, it’s magnanimous and helps to maintain morale on the team, especially considering Buchner was well-liked on the team. This move reflects an awareness of what has been made permissible and politics the scenario as well as possible.

I'm so conflicted on this. On the one hand, I completely agree with you that this is the current state of affairs with the "free-agency" transfer portal and NIL. On the other hand, by entering the portal, even to see what else is out there, demonstrates that the player isn't fully invested or committed to the team. In addition, Freeman has now lost leverage and essentially must provide the entire team the same opportunities - i.e., allowing a player to freely enter the portal with the option of returning.

I do understand why Freeman is willfully leaving the door open; in essence, he has to. He needs depth at the position, and presuming Buchner does indeed transfer, Notre Dame is now only one unfortunate play away from trotting Angeli out there.

That said, unless the coaching staff directly sat Buchner down and told him it would be advisable to look around, I still don't understand why Buchner would do this? Unless Notre Dame brought in another transfer following the conclusion of the 2023 season, and they may, Buchner is a essentially a shoo-in to start 2024 and potentially 2025.

That sounds like the old Bama game manager QBs like McCarron and McElroy. But I don't think Buchner fits that mold. He doesn't really have any layups in his bag right now. He will be dared to throw week in and week out by faster defenses than basically every opponent he has ever faced.

He needs to go somewhere where he can develop. I'm not sure Tuscaloosa is that place despite their world-renowned QB developer OC. No one down there is going to have patience for pick 6's and three and outs on a regular basis, and the pressure is going to get heavy, fast.

Lighten up, Nancy.

Honest to God, if TB goes to Alabama and starts, he may get Rees fired in year one. With a schedule that consists of Texas, @ South Florida, Ole Miss, @ A&M, Arkansas, Tennessee, LSU, @ Kentucky, and @ Auburn...I see one legit tough game and a bunch of other easy wins that only look good because the collective OOC schedules are once again a total joke.

Fixed

Then why the hell is he currently on a visit there? Just to see how Tommy's enjoying marital bliss?
Here is how it went down in my little head.... He shit the bed in the spring game, was finally told SH will be the starter, got emotional and called TR, put his name in the portal ( but made a point to let the world know the door is still open to come back) will visit Bama and be told he will have a package of plays like he would at ND, but won't start over Milroe...cools down, talks to friends...family and Freeman...comes back to ND.

He put up 45 points in his only game against an SEC team. I'm sure he'd be just fine.
True, but 2 passes went for 125 of his 275 yards..not to mention the 8-5 Cocks were without both starting CBs and their starting safety.

And he was without the only reliable receiving threat Notre Dame had last year.

Buchner is good enough to get a coach fired. Great plays followed by head scratchers. Hartman was very complimentary about their relationship. I really thought TB would have some packages and do a solid year with a dedicated QB coach while sponging off Hartman and hit the ground running in 24. He seems to be a great kid but I’m sure he felt like he’s earned the shot to be the guy. I guess he doesn’t want to burn another year of eligibility in a support role. I hope it works out for him, he seemed like a good locker room guy.

What's interesting is hartman went through something similar at Wake. He lost his starting role and had to be backup, got much better, then exploded.

Lol...that 2nd pick 6 was horrible...just the decision to throw it in that situation is another knock on TB.
I doubt the play was a throw to the linebacker play. Qb needs to tuck it or wait till TE clears.

Lol at this username. Bet we've seen you before
But how many of their starters were sitting out to enter the portal or training for nfl or other reasons? If I remember correctly it was 8-10 on both sides of the ball and they still damn near pulled it off. Believe me, I want to see every player that comes to ND succeed, but sadly that's not always the case

I really just don't understand this move.

He most likely won't be the starter. If he is, he'll most likely lose the job the second he struggles.
