The timing of this just doesn't make sense to me. Why do you believe Buchner is just now announcing that he's entering into the transfer portal? I believe Hartman announced the he'd be transferring to Notre Dame in January. From that very moment, it was made clear to everyone that Hartman, barring injury, was going to be the starter for the 2023 season. In what world are we living in if we didn't know that Hartman, a four-year starter with approximately 50 games under his belt, and the ACC all-time leader in touchdowns and number 2 in the ACC in all-time passing yards, would beat out a guy with 3 starts (one of which was abysmal), 1-2 record, less than 1,000 passing yards, and more interceptions than touchdowns? Any discussion that this was an "open competition" and a "quarterback battle" is nothing more than mere window dressing.
Do you think MF did it to appease Buchner? Buchner had to know that he wasn't beating out Hartman. Hartman didn't transfer to Notre Dame to sit the bench; thus, wouldn't it make sense for Buchner to immediately jump ship and get on a team and undergo a full spring practice. Is something else there that I'm not aware of - e.g., is Buchner set to graduate this spring and earn a Notre Dame degree (which would, obviously, warrant staying through the spring semester)?
Lastly, do you think MF is making a mistake by "leaving the door open" for Buchner to test the transfer-portal waters? I understand MF wants the depth at, arguably, the most important position, but truthfully, I despise it. And, it also does set a precedent. Other players are going to want to be afforded the same opportunity - i.e., flirt with teams, see what else is out there, and still have the opportunity to come back. I don't blame them. If not, it displays favoritism.
Just wanting to get your two cents.
