I still don't quite understand why he left Michigan for that job (I guess money + Harbaugh looking to jump?) but then to be fired after one year? Yeesh. Michigan also looking for an OC again though.

Regardless, hopefully Miami doesn't come back at Rees. Though he'd be nuts to make a lateral move right now with the weapons we have coming back.

The "official" story is that Gattis was pissed when it looked like Harbaugh was leaving and the school effectively was considering everyone BUT Gattis to be the potential replacement (i.e., if they went internal it probably would have gone to Mike Hart). He pissed and moaned and demanded his agent find him another job.

The real story is that he is an incorrigible asshole, rubs everyone the wrong way, takes credit for other's accomplishments, and had inappropriate "contact" with a recruit('s mom).

Miami's offense was putrid.

I guess he doesn’t like Freeman as much as he claims he did.

And an alma mater is an alma mater. Hard to pass that up.

If you were a ND graduate and All-American, and coached with your good friend at Youngstown State, would you not take an offer to coach at your alma mater?

Laurinatis isn’t the coach I worry about losing to Ohio State, TBH. Though I guess we can cross that bridge when/if we come to it.

If recall everything I read was that he came he because of Freeman. To take the same position at his alma mater is just crazy to me. I can understand if it was a promotion but it’s not.

He started the 24 lb recruiting for us now we’ll have to send freeman in on now. Because I don’t think that Golden is gonna be able to build those relationships. I clearly won’t be wishing him any success.

I wouldn't be too upset. Odds are he was leaving after next season anyway. The standard for GAs is only 2 years.

I would say he also has a better chance at getting a full time LB coach job at Ohio State. They have an unbalanced staff composition and with Day no longer calling plays, I could see them helping Corey Dennis or Keenan Bailey get another job and giving Day the QB coach job. That would give Knowles an extra defensive coach, which could be Laurinaitis because Knowles is DC/LB right now, but normally he is just DC.

That is opposed to our team where the HC is a defensive guy, so we only get 4 defensive positions, meaning either our DC or HC has to have a position role or one person has to manage the entire secondary.

Freeman would bolt to OSU in a second if it opened up in 3/4 years. It would be between him and Fickell assuming neither of them don't crash and burn in the mean time.
Ohio State would have to mend some fences with Luke Fickell. Not rebuild burned bridges, but mend some fences, and there is enough work to do there that he could undoubtedly ask for some assurances and have the leverage to receive them. Fickell stepped in as the interim between Tressel and Lord Fingertaverntickle, then stayed, and his time as an assistant was filled with frequent verbal abuse from his Lordship. The administration and fanbase didn't particularly appreciate him, and considering he's a former player himself, it would ring pretty hollow if that job did open up and they came knocking expecting him to just take the job.

As for Freeman, I'm not the least bit concerned about him going anywhere at the moment.

Kind of depends on your experience there, doesn't it? Since we're talking about Ohio State, how lovie dovie of a relationship do you think Robert Smith has with his alma mater?

It has always seemed silly to me that people assume that because a guy went to school somewhere that he'd automatically want a job there or accept one if offered. It isn't always necessarily the case depending on individual circumstances.

If he has the kind of success I’m expecting do you really think he’d leave after getting the machine rolling?

Idk. Didn’t Freeman say if he did his recruitment all over again, he would have picked ND?
You say a lot of things when you just got a really big new job. You probably even mean a lot of them, in the moment anyway.

I’ve no idea whether Freeman would or wouldn’t leave ND for Ohio State. It probably depends on a lot of variables that haven’t even played out yet. But thats a scenario I’d worry about a lot more than a GA linebackers coach.

if freeman does good enough at ND to get hired at OSU I think I'd be okay with it. No way they hire him with a string of 9-4 and 10-3 seasons.

Is Saban still looking for coordinators? Haven't seen any updates on that front.
