Brey announcing his retirement at the end of the year was the right move. I hope this gets him a nice farewell for his final home games instead of calls for him to be fired. Happy trails Coach, thanks for the great memories, maybe can get another nice win or two on the way out.

Those two weeks for the 2014-2015 team were some of most fun i've ever had watching a sports team. They played great team basketball.
Back to back wins over Duke & UNC in Greensboro for the ACC Tournament Title, and then the awesome run that led to the heartbreak in the Elite 8 vs undefeated Kentucky.

That team had so many awesome personalities on it, and just all around great kids.
Will cherish those two elite eight runs forever.
Hopefully the new coach can get this program back to those highs soon.

Thanks for the memories Coach!
I was in Greensboro for that run - best in person sporting experience of my life by a mile. So thick in Tar Heels and Blue Devils and we took it to them all. If you want to be the best you got to beat the best.

Then to get shafted so hard getting stuffed in the bracket with clear #1 Kentucky - ND always gets jobbed in NCAA placement whether it is tough bracket, shit seeding or worst possible match up for our typically flawed teams. Thought we had no chance and they proved me wrong - so close to an ultimate Cinderella story.

Brey never pushed for facilities as far as I can tell - dude is a conundrum wrapped in an enigma. While I appreciate the ups and proving we can hang in the ACC - damn were there a lot of maddening lows and WTF moments the last 23 years.

I was always under the impression that our basketball facilities were really holding us back. So like a year or two after we went to the Elite 8's they announced the new basketball facility plan, I was stoked. I was ready for our program to take off. It did not.

Guessing Sweeney.
With the Freeman connection (still not sure what that is), it’ll be Sweeney.

UA will always hold this program back from being legit. Bigger deal than people want to admit.

Pretty sure the connection is just that Sweeney is a diehard fan. It wouldn't surprise me if he had an account to one of the message boards.

NBA assistant that would likely be hired as an NBA head coach within the next year or two.
Loves ND to the point of buying a home in South Bend (of all places) to live in during the offseason
Has a NIL plan

Sign me up.

I’m so curious about the NIL plan. I wonder if his interview this past summer was just to get face time with Swarbrick

It bothers me more than it should that he admitted he thought about doing it after the Texas Tech elimination. Sounds like he wasn't all in.

Micah Shrewsberry from Penn State is a name I keep seeing thrown around. No clue what interest there is mutually or otherwise, but that's an interesting one.

I still think that if Sweeney really wants this job bad enough and it is supposed to be his dream job, it's going to land there. I doubt there are many dudes whose dream job is ND Basketball.

I really don’t get the Shrewsberry thing. He’s accomplished nothing as a head coach.

Not sure how I feel about it sounding like Brey is going to have a big hand in the search for a new coach. I figured he would have a part but if it’s as big as part as he made it sound it’s just gonna be one of “his guys”.

If it's Ingelsby it will be hard for me to stay engaged with the program.

Need to hire someone who wants to be here and will coach/recruit with energy. Sweeney and Quinn would be my top choices because of their NBA experience. If they go with Inglesby or some mediocre PSU coach I won’t bother even referring to by name then it’s a colossal fuck up with no upside.

He went to Cathedral HS in Indy and Hanover College. Then he coached at Wabash, DePauw, IU South Bend, Butler and Purdue. He coached with Brad Stevens in the NBA as well. So the Indiana angle is pretty heavy there and therefore makes a lot more sense to me why his name is getting thrown around.

Penn State Basketball is an afterthought. He's got them pretty respectable right now. Not great, but respectable. He could probably win easier at ND in addition to having spent most of his basketball life in Indiana.

I get the Indiana angle but being from Indiana should not qualify you to coach at Notre Dame.

I agree with you and am not suggesting it is, but my assumption is it is the reason why is name is coming up. It's typically how these "lists" get put together. He's been an assistant under Brad Stevens and Matt Painter, then gets his first crack at an HC job at 45 years old with Penn State, not exactly a basketball beacon. If he has a good enough reputation in basketball circles, and it seems that he does, Swarbrick will hear those good things and potentially give the guy a call or not.

His resume certainly shows he's grinded and worked his way up to where he's at. He's currently won more games than he has lost at Penn State, which is something that typically hasn't happened at that program more recently with the guys before him.

Chris Quinn has been an assistant in the NBA for nearly ten years and with one team. He's undoubtedly had some calls over the years we have to assume. I just don't see it happening, but if it did, it would be quite a coup for ND Basketball

Outgoing leaders having a hand in choosing their replacement is a mistake to me UNLESS they have built a beast organization and a bonafide leadership tree. Same for coaching. Brey has no business having a say in my view based upon this standard.

He was a good coach, but did not build a beast program or bonafide coaching tree. I'm all in on Sweeney
