Hopefully the staff learns from this. If a committed player repeatedly takes visits to another school they should tell him that if he's going to look around then ND will do the same. Doesn't mean they'll force him out of the class or not honor his commitment should he ultimately want to stick, but they just need to prepare for every scenario.
Feel like that basically happened. See Munich / hillman

I understand this data, and it’s probably the best we can do from the outside, but I really think it’s functionally useless for comparing a student who is probably at the bottom quarter of NDs admissions criteria vs median or above for large State school.
Isn't that why you take the whole of one vs the whole of another? Or you're claim is the upper tier of ND grads are tipping the scales to make up for the poor schmucks that barely graduated? Or you think the lower tier of the graduating state schools weighs the hyper-successful down?

Why are you trying so hard to make the case for state schools? Did you attend one? No shame in it, I didn't attend ND. Wish I could've but I did not have rightly ordered priorities when I was younger. I hope my children have an opportunity to attend ND and I would actively steer them in that direction if they ask for my input. Even if they were given partial/full rides to attend other schools, I'd want them to sit down and consider ROIs for the "average student".

BTW Drumm had been told not to submit a CB on him for who knows how long, I believe it to be months that I first heard him reference that.

(why do the super secret CBs never work for us)
Bowen is just a coward if true.
A week before ESD he is going to flip when he knew months ago?
These kids want the money as if they are adults, but act worse than middle-schoolers. They demand respect from everyone else, but don’t respect others who care for them.
Silly.

Yeah I think Minich was always secretly the backup plan, though that was denied, remember we were supposed to have summer resolution on Bowen. Hillman was the senior season bloomer a coach dreams is always coming later.

I lol when they do this and then demand we "respect their decision".

Respect is both earned and is a two-way street. If you're not going to respect the coach you left behind, then you don't deserve respect in return. There's virtually ZERO reason to remain publicly committed to ND at this point, or any point really unless the plan is to sign there. That appears to be a fleeting reality.

Only reason would be that Bowen kept telling the staff the same line of shit that he was all in but still speaking with OU and others to make sure he was 100%. Instead, he just treated ND as a placeholder and had every intention to flip.

Just...no. GTFO with that line of nonsense.

It makes me actually respect recruits like Malik Muhammad and Samuel M’Pemba who by all accounts really liked ND but they wanted the bag more so they dropped ND fairly early in the process

So how do people feel about Bowen not decommitting to Freeman’s face last night?

Sounds like he just told ND what they wanted to hear last night despite always knowing his intentions.
Hard to say without knowing the details. Could just as easily be playing OU. End of the day though, I think ND is fine without him.

Is what it is. (Still need a Fireside Chat w/Reaper thread.)

I’m intrigued if anyone lets out of the bag the actual total times he visited Oklahoma. It’s north of 10. The secret ones are more than folks realize. Gotta protect the future decommits though.

So OU has been recruiting him for many, many months. Is it only now that they produced this mega NIL Deal?? It makes no sense to do this at the last second.

So if we lose Bown to OK U, OK U will now have a higher ranked class than us. I think that is unbelievable because what makes Brent Venerables such a great recruiter?? 6-6 class.

This sucks if this is our ceiling - Top 7 - Top 10 classes might be the norm. Not a great finish that is for sure.

After there was no resolution the second time there was suppose to be, the writing pretty much was on the wall at that point. He'll be fine at OU and ND will still be kicking tomorrow.

You win some and you lose some.

I hope he doesn't decommit until the clock strikes midnight and he loses one Under Armor shoe (preventing a certain foot injury on that side).

Fire away (no pun intended).
Luckily, or unluckily, I’m hitting the Scotch tonight instead of tomorrow because we were supposed to leave early in the morning for Christmas vacation, but got postponed literally as we were leaving.
So I’m drinking alone (since the postponement was the wife’s fault & I’m bitter) sitting in the dark listening to Amadeus.
So I’m literally chatting to you right now fireside…

Venables: "I'm sorry, Peyton, but due to the timing of your decommitment and an arcane NCAA rule that was never repealed, Bowen (Notre Dame Verbal) is now your legal surname, and it will have to be printed on the back of your jersey."

So far, I’m actually re-reading my posts to make sure I don’t threaten anyone or go too batshit crazy.
Can’t promise that the whole night…
Me to the mods when Bowen decommits:

Agree with the sentiment.

But the problem is that we're losing more than we're winning.

ND will have had 3 5-star commits over the past 10 cycles (Kraemer, Mayer, Johnson). We lost that many 5-stars in this class alone.

I am hoping he gets paid a motherload to set his family up but is ultimately a failure as a college player.
I’d like to see that be the trend, that is the players getting paid a lot just sort of having less focus taking it all for granted or something.
I’d like to see TaM type failure.

So first off, apologies to everyone, because I’m clearly very guilty of derailing the Bowen decommit thread.

My point on the stats are just that football recruits that can qualify for ND are probably above median for many State schools and below median for ND. On top of the fact that the college experience of athletes is just wildly different than the median student at any school.

So much of the “success” variable could already be predicted by family background / test scores, and so I’m trying to encourage more thinking on the margin when talking about the value added by Notre Dame compared to another school. We’ll just never get the data to compare the outcomes for similar kids.

I attended ND, but if I’m making the case for state schools, it’s because:

1) some recruiting posts are overly disrespectful of other colleges or exaggerating the relative differences in a way that pretends Notre Dame grads are undisputed superiors

2) Notre Dame has a reputation of being the Midwest Duke in terms of how haughty we can be about the school, and it makes me cringe.

It’s almost 6:30 Oklahoma time on Friday night the weekend before signing day and we don’t even know if this kid is getting on a plane to Oregon this weekend. This isn’t gonna end Wednesday, is it?
