I find it hard to believe he won’t get the degree.
I hope he does. He did his part the best he could this year for the team. I’d be surprised if he leaves here for an inferior academic institution without a degree. Then again, he’s from a pretty wealthy part of Connecticut, he may have some hooks for a career regardless of where he graduates from.

I believe he enrolled early, so its 6 semesters plus three summers.

I stand corrected.

I was going off of our thread title which usually says Early Enrollee if they are. I even double checked his 247 timeline which said he enrolled in June but he was obviously there Spring of '20 going by our posts in this thread.

And that's what Irish Envy does better than any other ND site, gives you a searchable timeline where all questions can be answered and all of our humbling hot takes are forever ripe for public consumption.

Thx for pointing that out. 6 semesters + 3 summer school sessions + online availability during Covid (and beyond?) is a different story.

Pyne's dad is a very big deal in the sports marketing/licensing world. Used to run IMG and before that was COO of NASCAR.
Pyne will be fine. (But yes he'd be stupid to not finish his degree.)

Yeah pretty likely his dad advised him to pull the trigger now to maximize his options. Can't really blame him.

Also don't type in "George Pyne House New Canaan, CT" unless you want to throw up.

Tin foil hat time.

ND wants to see what Buch has before the competition with the incoming transfer in the Spring. If they just make Buch the starter with Pyne available, it might look like to said transfer that Buch is the incumbent starter. If Pyne leaves the program before the bowl game. The staff had no choice but to make Buchner the starter for the game. Still wide-open competition. They get their cake and eat it too. Now back to work.
I don’t believe that’s tin foil hat worthy, I believe that’s exactly what’s happening

Interesting read on Dad below. Touches on tv rights for sports and dropped this tidbit:

"You are 19x more likely to watch a game you are betting on"

Only 23 states currently have online sports betting and that DOESN'T include the populous states of California, Texas, Florida, Ohio & Georgia. So there's a lot of future money going to flow into this as new windows are opened and additional streamers claim those windows.

If you were going to transfer in the spring, get in the portal now. It’s a game of musical chairs. No issue with this.

I wish him well and thank him for his efforts this season.

Best of luck to the young man. I don’t think anyone should be upset that he’s leaving right now. You want a staff that isn’t afraid to make tough decisions. They know Pyne isn’t the answer and want to know where Buchner stands physically and if he’s learned anything from the sidelines. If Pyne leaving is the fallout so be it.

I would also add for those that have been ragging on Pyne during the season, remember. Pyne never claimed to be a savior and did what he was asked to do. Everyone knew what his limitations were and to expect more out of him is unreasonable.

Looks like he’s half a foot taller than Drew.
Are you telling us his Mom is short without telling us Mom's short?

I mean that's fair, and I'm not going to single out any posters, either.

Just seems like the overwhelming majority of the board hated on the guy and I assume think this is somehow good news, and it's a shame. Just going off of what I've been reading here all season.

Drew is by all counts a high character guy and leader of this team and he put everything he had on the line to get us to 8 wins, and people don't really seem to appreciate that. That's all.
I don’t think the players spend a great deal of their time dwelling on what is said on this Board. They are much more concerned about what their coaches and friends think.

Wow I was not expecting this new at all. The timing is the most surprising. Wow. Everyone one knows Drew wasn’t the most consistent or a game changer. From what I read Drew is a stand up guy and he at least ways have it his all for the Irish. Good luck Drew.

Come on Tommy let’s see how you handle this.

Blessings to you, Drew, wherever life leads.
Thank you for your hard-work and toughness in service to the team.
I can't imagine that we'd have won as many games in our circumstances this season without you.
Hope you knock it out of the park at your new school.

Wish I knew just what happened -I'm sure it will come out but what a MESS-from the outside looking in it seemed to me this kid gave everything he had to fill the void-hard to imagine this program cant find a dominant QB-now that this happened I'm glad I never attacked this guy like some people on this board-I think I'd leave too after all he had thrown on him and then threw 22 TD passes in 10 games.

I wasn't implying he's reading this board, it's common sense, and perhaps he even had an honest conversation with the staff.

Why would they be bringing in a transfer if not to find a guy who's going to compete for the starting job?

Why would they be inserting Buchner into bowl prep if it was Pyne's job to lose, or they felt like Pyne was the guy moving forward?

He obviously feels like he's earned a starting role, so he's seeking it elsewhere. The writing is on the wall. I think ND is better with Pyne on the depth chart but he clearly wants to be at the top of one. Immediately.

5) If his stats were good, it is rock solid proof that stats can't be trusted. I watched Trent Dilfer win a Super Bowl with my Ravens. Dilfer stunk.
completely random, but dilfers daughter played volleyball for nd

Good luck to him, hope if he plays ND ever again he loses badly. All I care about is now we get a good qb for next season.

With the context of his Dad now - would not be shocked at all to see this guy transfer to the Ivy League

No way. Drew sees himself as an NFL player, especially as demonstrated by this move. You and I can laugh at that all we want and yeah he's probably not making the league but all these **** guy (and he was a four star) view themselves as future NFL starters. Think about how unbelievably good all of them were in high school. You can't help it.

Also, I wonder: if it's true that the staff told him they were starting tyler over him in the bowl game and then he transferred I could see this creating locker room tensions. Twitter makes it seem like he was really loved by the guys. But as an aspiring top tier quarterback you have to be ready for constant savage competition for your spot. That's the cost of getting to be that guy. That said I think the only way this isn't kind of a soft move is if the staff definitively told him there's no way he's not starting next fall, no matter what he does going forward. That would be messed up.

This whole situation is super perplexing. I get it. We don’t need to pile on a 22 year old who did his best, but so much about it stands out. Also what else is an Internet message board for.

It really seems like his family couldn’t let go of the dream of their son being an athletic talent in the family tradition. He was a full 2 years older than his class in HS so he could stand out, and I’d be shocked if his ‘Stage Dad’ (H/T John Walters) wasn’t involved in making sure he got the ND offer.

He had times where he looked serviceable and times when he wouldn’t be QB1 for Sorin College. He is supposed to be an IVy League kid, it was his 3rd year in the program, and he still needed a Scan offense to move the ball, woof.

Several posters point out that he gave his all. I’m sure this is true. Others have said he was a team guy. I’m not sure I buy that he was so much of a leader on the team. Maybe, but in my experience the rich kid, try-hard isn’t typically a universally respected leader.

The fact that he blindsided the staff to leave early, suggests he really isn’t a team first guy, so all of the criticism seems a lot more warranted today than yesterday.

He’s young, rich and I wish him no ill will. But I am happy he’s gone because it was agonizing to watch him play.

Not counting Powlus since he's a legacy, but 3 out of the last 4 QBs we've recruited have transferred. That sucks for development, depth, and retention...but it's something we're going to have to get used to in the current landscape of college football. Going forward QB will be a position that you're going to lose if they're on the bench.

Disagree. Maybe the timing wasn't super with most of the coaches out recruiting, but it's better that they notify them sooner rather than later so he's not eating up bowl reps and then leaving them having to scramble to get Angeli ready the week of the game. It sounds like news spread of a transfer coming in, and now Buchner likely starting the bowl game, and Drew decided it was time.

Lmaooooo this is such brutality. I looked up up the two years thing and its true I'm dead. That must have been so awkward freshman year of high school. That is honestly a wild thing to do and I know more and more parents are doing it. A little scummy to be honest.

BUT dude he wasn't that bad. I feel like we can only really blame 1 loss on him out of the 10 games he started. The numbers all indicate he was like a middling P5 QB statistically...which is pretty good all things considered

This generations 5 foot nothing 100 and nothing

Kid gave what he was capable of giving.

Maybe he thinks he can give more.
If he's smart he's walking with a degree and goes to New Haven to play for an Ivy.

I said he looked serviceable. It was just hard to watch.
