Its 100 percent Tommy's fault we're stuck with Pyne right now... but God Damnit... I think I'm coming around.
I disagree.
I've said this before, but it's really looking like our QB woes in recruiting were a Kelly/Long problem, not a Rees one.
Rees was hired in 2017 to be QB. The dude had never been a position coach and was a fresh 24 year old newbie.
Meanwhile, he's working with certified "offensive guru" with 30 years of coaching experience Brian Kelly, and certified offensive douchebag Chip Long. Do you honestly believe that either of those guys gave Tommy ANY say in who they went after for who was going to run their offense?
We already know that Kelly was a lazy recruiter, and to recruit QB's, you NEED a head coach who's going to be heavily involved practically every step of the way. It comes with the territory because that QB is often going to be the leader of your class. Add in the fact that Chip Long turned out to be an unlikable prick, you have very little to work with in terms of backing from your bosses.
It's no shock that once Tommy got promoted, he got a bit more say in who they went after and frankly, the QB recruiting has been significantly more consistent. Buchner is a major talent if he can stay healthy, Angeli is an underrated prospect with a better ceiling than he gets credit for, Minchey is a very impressive passer with good legs to boot and Carr is another major talent. That's the recruiting you need.
Not, get a top 100 player in Wimbush, then follow it up with a mid 3-star with a lower ceiling, followed by a guy who's future in college is most likely not QB, followed by another mid 3-star, followed by a guy who had been plummeting in the rankings and clearly hadn't grown as expected.
Under Freeman, recruiting never stops. They're not settling for less, and they're not going to tolerate inconsistencies on the trail.
