SC fans literally pay no attention until they are winning and then it's super over the top in your face blow hard like they've been real fans the whole time.... good lord it's grating as fuck.
From my experience they come down once every two years, stay overnight in Chicago, and mill around the tailgating lots complaining about the weather but are mostly polite. Then they leave.

I guess you are dealing with the alums that can afford the trip... I'm talking about experiences growing up with these damn hood rats in LA... if they aren't super obnoxious bandwagon fans they are stealing your hubcaps or trying to sell dime bags for forty.

Probably some truth to this, I've been to several USC home games and they haven't been awful. My family and I had a solid tailgate going in 2015 and we saw these two USC fans pull up in a Prius sitting on the bumper of their car drinking a beer. It was such a sad sight we invited them over for some food and a cigar, and they stuck around for a while. They were pleasant enough and gracious that we invited them to join us.

Every fan base has their bad eggs, ours included, to be sure. If you were in the heart of the fan base, not only would you know better than our brief encounters but you have to put up with their shit so it makes sense you have the same feeling towards fUSC that we do scUM.

No, the ND fans from nothern Indiana feel the same way. But yeah, it's because they've had to deal with Michigan fans.
ND fan from the Northeast here.

We get a lot of people who went to Michigan - often for grad school - and don’t know jack shit about college football but love to brag on their Wolverines when they’re good. Oddly they disappear when Michigan sucks.

Idiots. Stick to pro sports.

In order of how obnoxious their fans are I think it goes,

OSU > Michigan > USC
OSU and Michigan are 1A and 1B as far as I am concerned. I can't differentiate between the two fan bases. And, Penn State is up there for me too, right after USC, but that's probably just a product of where I live.

I think its more

OSU> Any SEC team not Vandy > Clemson > Mich > USC

Its hard for me to complain about Michigan fans. All of my best friends through out my life have been Michigan fans and all of them have been great people to talk football with. None of them were obnoxious. Hell the Michigan State fans I have met have been by far more annoying than any of the Michigan fans I have met. I even went to a Rose Bowl in Irish garb that was between Michigan and USC. Only 1 Michigan fan I ran into was obnoxious but I think he was just a naturally born douche bag.

I should probably add I live on the NC/SC border so I run into a lot of Clemson fans and they act like they have been good forever and are one of the blue bloods of the sport. So Fing annoying.

OSU fans are way up there as well, but at least they've had more recent success in the last two decades to back up their obnoxious behavior. That's not justifying their actions, but scUM has been largely irrelevant since the late 90s and early 00s, until the past two years. Even that seems fake with their charmin soft schedule, further boosted by Penn State and Sparty being down this year.

Me and some buddies traveled to a Purdue game in the Big House in college.

For the most part, it was a larger version of ND Stadium, lots of old people sitting on their hands, nobody being obnoxious jackasses to us, etc.

Late in the game, one of the members of our group got a little carried away (we were obviously quite intoxicated), and a guy in his 40’s kind of took him to the side, and said

“Son, I’m glad you had fun today, but if you to go Columbus and pull this same shit, the entire section is going to stomp you into the ground.”

Now of course a team like Purdue doesn’t move the needle much for large fanbases, so YMMV

Clemson is way less obnoxious than Michigan. ScUM fans are really aggressive in Ann Arbor. Miami had some aggressive fans too in my interactions. UGA fans are like Clemson in their unjustified arrogance, but they are definitely a barbecue and cocktail party fan base when it comes down to it

I went to the Big House with my dad when I was 13 or 14, and I'm walking by some of the houses on the way to the big house. We're obviously wearing our ND gear so we had been heckled quite a bit that day. As we're walking along, I finally hear someone yell "hey, go Irish!" so I got excited and looked over onto their lawn...a middle aged man wearing a Desmond Howard jersey sees he got my attention and says: "Fuck the Irish" and proceeds to throw a 3/4 full beer at me.

scUM.

Gotta admit I have never had that kind of interaction with any fan base. That is a prime A Dick right there. I was talking more about being able to have a civil conversation about football without degrading into insults. I had a Clemson fan actually look at me and say "can you at least admit that Clemson will win 5 more Championships before ND". They were being dead serious and that is the mentality of most of the Clemson fans I run into. They act like football didn't exist before Dabo.

Yeah that's asinine. Like I said, every fan base including ND has some bad eggs. scUM fans are pretty pompous; they'll make fun of us for playing Navy (even though they play one of EMU/CMU/WMU every year), but as soon as they get Air Force or Army on their schedule they talk about how rough it is to defend the option, players get hurt, etc. Hypocrites. And then there's the classic "Join a conference and then you can talk." yet you look at their non-conference schedule this year. Joke.

I've heard horror stories from my aunt and uncle about traveling to the Colosseum as well. I'm sure Clemson fans have huge heads from the past 10 years, success will do that to you. Feels great to have bullied them a couple of weeks ago.

Yeah gonna be honest the USC rivalry doesn't even really feel like a rivalry to me. The schools are just too far and there's basically no high schools that send lots of kids to both so there's none of that intensity that comes from the proximity in the rivalry. And for the entire modern Kelly/Freeman era of ND football the games have never meant that much. The Michigan game, to me, is the only thing on our schedule that feels like a true rivalry. I know TONS of Michigan people, went to school and work with so many and the games are always relevant and intense. I love shitting on them too tbh but then I got into the professional world and found Michigan people tend to really respect the ND degree so that lessened the hate a little bit but also makes it my favorite football game to win. We're pretty similar institutions in terms of the people attracted (aside from religiously) and national profile both academically and football-wise, which I feel like makes the rivalry more relevant than any other.

ND up two spots to #18. UNC came in at 13, Clemson 9, USC at 7. They'll play #16 UCLA this weekend ahead of our trip to LA.

In other news, I am pretty shocked to see LSU at #6 ahead of USC. I get that they just beat Bama but can we stop pretending that Bama is the same Bama of the past 12 years? They're down this year. I suppose it will all take care of itself with USC having two tough games ahead, and LSU needs to go through UGA still for the SEC championship, but this seems a bit silly.

Tennessee is sitting nicely at #5 with no conference championship bid; they'll likely get in over the loser of OSU/scUM.

So do we think that jumping up to #12 is possible by winning out? Supposedly that's the only chance of getting an at-large bid for a NY6 game. I originally thought it was very possible, but expected USC to be top 5 for that game in the Coliseum.

we'd have to jump 6 more spots to do so; if USC beats UCLA, and we beat USC, I think we likely jump both schools. We would also likely jump the loser of UNC/Clemson since we beat both; We'd also likely hop KSU and Washington in a 9-3 scenario. That's only 5 (and assuming USC beats UCLA, otherwise we likely don't jump UCLA and that's only 4).

Might be tougher that it looks, honestly. I don't see us jumping a 3 loss LSU if they fall to UGA, with how inflated they're ranking is currently. For some reason Penn State is just outside the top 10 even though they don't have anything close to a marquee win; I just don't think there are enough losses out there for the teams already ahead of us.

I think it's best we temper NY6 expectations, unfortunately, and if it happens, what a great surprise.

Of course, I could be completely wrong and am open to being persuaded to get my hopes up

If we win out I don't see how they can't put us in the top 12. That would give us 5 ranked wins if I'm remembering correctly?

Who else has that many?

Right now ND is behind 5 PAC teams. Assuming ND wins out, I would expect a fair amount of carnage remaining in the PAC to drop some of them back (let's say 3 of them). Plus, an undefeated ND will pass the loser of Clemson/UNC.

I believe Kansas State will play TCU in the Big 12 championship. A TCU win would put KSU behind a 9-3 ND.

Ole Miss, Penn State, and LSU (assuming another loss in the SEC championship) would all fall behind 9-3 ND if they dropped a regular season game but should be well-favored in their remaining schedule. Alabama MIGHT fall behind an undefeated ND with a loss to Auburn but I'm not too confident in that.

So, my very quick (probably missing information) look is that we will probably need one of Ole Miss, Penn State, and LSU to drop one of their remaining regular season games to have a shot.

Actually, would ND basically need to be in the top 11 since a G5 team will also get a bid?

The path to #11 seems pretty narrow even if ND handles business from here.

That seems correct to me. UCF/Tulane looking poised to grab one of those at large spots.

Technicality, but can't count UNC; UNC was unranked when we beat them and BYU and 'Cuse were ranked when we beat them, so you can't have your cake and eat it too. I think the proper way to look at it is who was ranked at the time.

But your point is still valid, we would have 4 ranked victories with BYU, Syracuse, Clemson and USC. With a fifth very quality win over UNC. Counterpoint is that we have two worse losses than just about any of these teams we are talking about jumping, so it's a tough call.

Penn State is the real problem. I don't see them losing another game - they have rutgers and sparty left.

I think the best case scenario for ND to get into the Cotton Bowl would be:

TCU loses a regular season game beats K state in the B12 title game. That puts TCU in Sugar Bow and drops K state behind ND
LSU loses to Georgia and they are out of playoffs
USC loses to ND and are out of playoffs
That leaves Georgia, OSU, Michigan and Tenn in the playoffs.
Penn State in the Rose Bowl
Chaos in the PAC
Ole Miss has to lose b/c I don't think LSU will fall behind ND unless they lose two games.

I’m not sure I want a NY6 this season,… my mind sees us squeak in and instead of rightfully getting the lowest matchup we get someone like Bama in a Southern bowl game and Saban gets time to prepare for Pyne,…. I’ll take one of the other bowls thank you very much

If ND gets into the NY6 then by far the most likely opponent is a G5 team. OTOH, if they miss the NY6 there is a good chance they end up in the Gator Bowl against Alabama because Tennessee, UGA, and LSU might all be headed to NY6 games.

Lol,… that would totally be my dumb ass luck. Although, would Bama be locked into this bowl contract wise??
