I said it before, and though it’s not likely, they could possibly lose 9 games. Especially if he loses the players. It’s happened before and he’s not off to a great start. The fan base will get louder and louder. He’s got his hands full right now.

I’m also wondering if Polian is the first coach fired? Nah, he’ll be protected until his own head gets put on the chopping block.

I think he'll right the ship. Go outside his circle and hire some stud coordinators again.
It's impossible not to have talent at LSU.

The cronyism is so heavy on that staff. I know that has always been Kelly’s thing, but seeing it from a different angle is eye opening. He always has to be the head cheese and can never tolerate another coach getting attention. I understand there are those you come to trust over the years but the Kelly way feels so greasy.

I have a really hard time seeing Kelly ever beating Saban or Smart. Then one or both of Jimbo and Kiffin will probably beat him every year. He’s not going to magically become better at recruiting. Yeah LSU has loads of in state talent but a lot of the top players are getting poached by the other winning programs and that probably will continue.
Saban already pulls a lot of the talent out of Louisiana, and Jimbo & Kirby (and soon Sark) will get a lot of it also. BK can't go half-ass on recruiting LA and think he'll just skate by on being the home program. He'll end up quickly being no better than Tennessee or Mississippi St.

There is no evidence he would ever hire a stud OC. There's a reason why ND's offense was never good against good defenses. It always has to be HIS offense no matter who is calling the plays.

I agree, he often stocked the ND staff with friends instead of the best assistants he could get, and then stuck with them even when they weren't getting the job done. As for not wanting assistants that draw attention or who are destined for bigger & better, that's just plain stupid. Bryant once said, when asked about whether it bothered him to have assistants who were smarter than him, that if they weren't smarter than him he didn't need them. Kelly needs to put his ego aside and hire more fire-breathing, smart, ambitious, future HC's for his staff.

That shitshow last night was embarrassing. Totally unprepared team across the board, especially the special teams. Last night screamed mediocre assistants who didn't have their players ready. If your assistants aren't doing their job, it's on the HC for hiring them, not demanding better, and for letting them stay on your staff when they aren't doing their job well enough.

It hurt to see the Irish lose one that could have fallen their way, but I was extremely happy to see BK lose his opening game (and I don't even like F$U)! Kuck Felly and LSU!!!

Kelly and LSU will be fine. He already has them almost as good as we were last year.year
I'm sorry, what? Not even close. We were 11-2 last year, losing only to a playoff team and a team who was inches from getting to the playoffs.

Kelly just put out the sloppiest game I've seen in a long time and lost to an FSU team that played equally as sloppy.

And they still almost won. We barely beat FSU last year.

He might NOT last. He walked into something that I think he didn't expect. These players are studs absolutely, but they are NOT the kind of people (some of them) that Coach has ever worked with. Lou would come right into a situation full of problems, uproot almost everything including some players, and promptly lose a bunch of games. His employers however would hang in there with him that first lousy year, and the program would grow into a monster machine. Lou also would bench stars if they acted like they were bigger than the team. I don't know if CoachK has the chones to act that strongly, but he better. And he really needs a high-quality OC and to fire the special teams coach. The latter immediately. He actually took over Special Teams in Fall practice once himself here at ND and coached them well. IF he takes a strong stance, he'll win more than he loses this year and then begin to kick ass. If he does not do this, he'll be stuck with a lingering disease. I more than anything else (even the special teams clown show) disliked the on-field body language of some of those receivers. They need a serious woodshedding.

If your former players from years and years ago are making fun of you that says a lot about the relationship you had (did not have) with them

FWIW, while he was here I was never under the impression that Polian did a lot of coaching of special teams, but really was more of a recruiter, program-wide culture-builder and Friend of Brian, who needed a title so they called him special teams coach.

Which dude are you referring to? There’s like 5 or 6 dudes that fit that description here. Just start talking about Tommy Rees. Like three of them will come out from under the fridge with diatribes against “homerism”. 😂

I thought Norvell was a better coach, but maybe it's simply too difficult dealing with that culture. The game turned in LSU's favor when FSU late hit the QB. LSU was ready to fold the tent after a terrible overshot pass. I think in game management was poor as well from my armchair QB seat. Up 7-3 before half and you go for it on 4th and 2 instead of trying the field goal. Assuming you make it, you go up 10-3 knowing you get the ball to begin the second half. He seemed super panicked down the stretch. I see them finishing 8-4. Pure luck winning that game.

I think they both coaches like crap

He still doesn’t want to take responsibility. That is what will end this what will certainly be tumultuous marriage in the Bayou.

It’s not hard to say “I can assure you he will learn from this and we will make him better” instead of “We thought he was good, turns out he sucks.”

There’s a pretty clear distinction between Saban and BK on a personal level:

Lots of people dislike Saban, but respect him, hence the giant amount of grace when he does something generally scoundrel-esque.

Lots of people dislike BK, and also don’t respect him, hence the larger criticisms.

You can argue if it’s fair or not, but when two guys are both wearing giant hats, you are gonna have a harder time dismissing the one with actual cattle in his pasture.

Kelly had a lot of wins at ND bc he never played anyone good. Rarely if ever did he beat a team that out recruited him. The measure of good coaching is beating teams that recruit better or simply out recruiting everyone. Freeman appeared to have pushed the needle in coaching performance Saturday night. We already know how he recruits. That seems like a good combo. Let’s see how he does with a cupcake like Marshall. We know how BK did with bad team like Toledo.

Most USC teams Kelly beat had “better” talent fwiw.
I would disagree. Maybe at the skill positions but not along the lines, at TE, or most of the defensive side of the ball. Plus there was never any coaching stability.
