On Vizzina, something to consider, we offered Vizzina is October of 2021. There were two months from then to Freeman getting the job. Then, there were two months from when Freeman took over, called Vizzina to tell him he was our guy and Vizzina's end of December visit to that February Loy update. No chance ND doesn’t have the lead if we pressed like we should’ve from the moment of the offer or even the moment Freeman made that call. But we didn’t. Even Loy commented back then, on how Vizzina couldn’t commit without Dante getting a call. Recruits feel that and it gets back to them. The narrative was put out there that Dante was the #1 guy, from the very beginning, on purpose. They tried to skirt around it but it ultimately mattered. Just like it mattered last cycle with how everything was handled.
The end result is all that matters. Whether you can’t land the QB because you don’t have enough swag or you don’t land them because you don’t grind enough or you chose the wrong horse and that horse ended up being a dishonest bunch, is really irrelevant. What matters is who ya got. So far, we got nobody. I'd call that a miss.
As a whole, Rees has been QB coach since 2017. His QB recruiting has been a mixed bag. You give him credit for Buch and soon to be CJ but there is no way you can look at it and call it a success. Rees could not recruit a replacement for Ian so he had to get a GT in Coan. Coan isn't even a drafted NFL QB. The fact that after so long, Rees did not have his own QB to take over for Book is the problem. The fact that he's literally never recruited a QB that's in the NFL is a problem.
In fact, fun yet crazy fact. Since Rees came back in 2017, he has never recruited a QB, out of HS, that has started, finished, and won a game in a ND uniform. That's insanity. Buch in 2022, Rees 6th season back, will be his first chance.
This notion that when he gets called up by the Rams will be some sort of validation is misleading, IMO. It will be validation for his offensive mind and prowess, not his recruiting wins. The dude can call some good offense. The Rams won't be hiring him for the spotty recruiting. It will because he's smart offensive guy that will call plays.
