China seems to the be the wildcard in my mind. I’m thinking they are staying out of everything and will decide later to either support Russia or be the savior of Ukraine or savior or whatever other mess Putin creates.

now that you say that, they could absolutely come out of this looking like a million bucks hypothetically, if they coerced russia to stop the fighting, or even more extremely, joined in the special economic operation against Russia with the west. they could seize the narrative for themselves, it would be a master stroke potentially.

I doubt the Chinese will be persuaded by a NYT puff piece. Count on them to do what's in their best interest whatever that may be.

Unless they do and you get nuclear war. That's what makes your position laughable.
The shit many people here are advocating for now is to do a military intervention NOW. That position is 10x less defensible than putting troops there weeks/months ago. And yes...trying to do a no-fly zone is a military intervention.

Ukraine really ought to be careful with this recording POW stuff. The Geneva Convention says this at sort of thing is unacceptable. Basically, dont whine about rules being broken when you too are breaking the rules, even in relatively harmless ways.

lol and before some people embarass and degrade themselves by saying "HE HAS A STUTTER".... I'll save you the trouble and say people mix up words sometimes. We all know what he means. But it is mildly amusing.

Honestly, the people this country has had run for president since, Reagan, I guess…. It doesn’t even matter what party, they are all just awful. Ffs, just embarrassing

I think the Geneva Convention will be busy with the countless war crimes russia has already committed, rather than being worried about POW press conferences

I'm sure Russia has committed war crimes. I'm sure everybody does to some degree, doesn't excuse Russia whatsoever. But if we have rules...we need to follow said rules. The US has had some issues regarding our POWs and other POWs. So Ukraine should be held accountable as well. Russia as well. I'm sure they aren't treating Ukrainian POWs particularly well.

When the Germans surrendered at Stalingrad in early 1943...I believe it was about 90k soldiers. Only 5k ever made it back to Germany. Had we done a Nuremberg deal for ALL combatants, I suspect we'd have seen a lot of Russians hang as well.

Maybe if the Syrian’s are shi’a, Ukraine can get some of the Sunni Jihadists to help

Yeah what’s the syrian soldier’s motivation here other than to not die
Mercenaries like money. They aren't gonna be fighting crack troops. If true they are coming, they are fighting against.....Basically national guard trainees.

Leave it up to a Frenchman born over 325 years ago to sum it up perfectly...

“Those who can make you believe absurdities, can make you commit atrocities.”

The sad part here though is that we in the US, self-proclaimed beacons of freedom, do everything possible to subvert, mock, and villainize those with different political leanings. No one person, political party or "news" organization has a monopoly on truth and righteousness. But the every increasing self-isolation and echo chamber media sources is allowing us in the US of A to take steps towards the very things we say are wrong. I think we have much to learn as a country. But sadly, instead of self-reflection, these terrible events playing out before us will be weaponized to "score points" politically. True leaders would take this time to unite. But my money is more on politicians using this as an opportunity to double down on dividing.

I have no idea if Chechens have been a difference maker or not....but Ukraine has been falling pretty steadily the last several days.

What? All they have to show for it is Ukraine’s fifteenth largest city and maybe Mariupol in the coming days which is 11th in population. The Russians have gotten pushed back at Kharkiv and Ukraine has retaken the countryside. They’ve lost ground outside Kyiv. They haven’t made any gains in the separatist regions.

When they do eventually get to the bigger cities, without a long siege, they don’t have the manpower right now nor the experience for urban warfare. Syrian mercenaries will be rather fresh off Aleppo and Homs from their Civil War which had the heaviest urban fighting of the 21st century.

They own the southern coast. Odessa is going to fall. Do you know what happens to cities when they get surrounded? Cities require food and supplies.

People have tried to paint a rosy picture like Ukraine is winning. They arent. They continue to grow more isolated. Things are getting worse for them and will likely continue to get worse. Literally their only hope is they hold out long enough for the Russian people or military to take drastic steps.
