"The author revealed the decision in a press release announcing a publication date for Fire and Blood, his upcoming history of the Targaryens which has clocked in at a massive 989 pages long."

There's no way this dude makes it long enough to actually finish his series in written form.

He's gonna croak before he's even written 100 pages of "A Dream of Spring."

And the funny part about THAT is that those 100 pages would have originally belonged to "The Winds of Winter," which will undoubtedly begin to run too long as he finishes it.

And then he'll have to announce an EIGHTH book to be published AFTER "A Dream of Spring," because ADoS will have gotten too big, and the 9th book will be called "Summer's Never Gonna Get Here Fuckers."

The crazy thing is he thought he could have it done at some point in 2016. How could you possibly be that far off?

I was talking to a coworker about the books and show the other day, and we got on the topic of what we think will happen in the end, and he told me about an interesting theory that I hadn't read before:

Griff/fAegon is actually a decoy/ruse, and is acting as a convenient figurehead until the hidden Blackfyre movement meets it's true namesake... Daenerys Blackfyre.

Dany is actually the hidden Blackfyre, and was sent for hiding across the sea with Viserys, who didn't know any better in his youth.

This is interesting to me, because it would give Jon and Dany's potential marriage and offspring legitimacy, whereas as things stand now, they are committing incest and their children would be bastards. Jon would be the true heir to the Targ throne, and Dany wouldn't actually be his aunt.

I don't know if that means something, or if it doesn't matter at all, since it's unlikely that GRRM lets both Dany AND Jon live through the end, regardless. I guess he could kill Dany after she has a kid, which gives Jon a child that is legitimately an heir, but that still seems a bit too rosy.

Viserys is 7 years older than Danny. It seems pretty unlikely to me that a 7 year old wouldn't question a sister coming out of nowhere all of a sudden.

Also they would still be related. Blackfyre is an offshoot of the Targs. So they would be distant cousins.

Yeah but the Blackfyre's were de-legitimized weren't they? Plus, I don't think cousins marrying is frowned upon like aunt/nephew would be, though I don't know if it's even explained to such an extend in the narrative.

PS I don't think that's going to happen, since fAegon is completely absent from the show, but I thought it was an interesting idea on where that stroyline might be going in the books. There's gotta be some grand deception still in play with fAegon and the motives of his supporters.

Schrodinger's Blackfyre. All of your theories are simultaneously correct and incorrect, and it doesn't matter because we're never going to get another book.

We're gonna get tWoW, but it's going to be clear by the end of that book that he needs to write another beyond "A Dream of Spring"...

And then he's going to die before he even writes 100 pages of new* material for ADoS, because he'll want to finish the Targ history books first, and then he'll get busy producing the new HBO show ("The Long Night"), and then he'll get busy trying to produce a show about Valyria at its height, and he will abandon the written series officially.

*He'll have plenty of material for ADoS... but it will be cut material from tWoW, like he had to do with "Dragons" and "Crows"

In-laws got me “Fire and Blood” for Christmas.

Read the first chapter after putting the kids to bed. It gets right into an explanation of Aegon I landing and rapidly conquering most of Westeros... this book is a gift to those that love the politics and maneuvering more than anything else when it comes to ASoIaF.

So I've been involved with some efforts at work to have GRRM come to our institution and speak to some classes, which would be followed by one of his regular and much-larger speaking/reading engagements at an assembly hall.

I won't copy-and-paste, but it was funny to see in an email, from GRRM himself and in his own words, that he has [finally] put everything on hold until "Winds" is out.

(And before the cries of displeasure rain down upon me for being part of an effort to further distract him from his writing: I legitimately told my supervisor that we should wait until the newest book is out before we get in touch with him via our well-placed source. But my protest fell upon deaf ears.)

How the fuck did he think he could have it out by the end of 2015?

Y'all buy the rumors that Martin is announcing a release date at the end of the month? There's been some activity on his site.

I don’t buy it.

I maintain that based on what the show gave us in the final two seasons, and how rushed it was, and based on all of the barely-begun threads in FIVE books, that GRRM has realized it’s gonna take 8 books to finish the series, and he knows he can’t do it, so he’s given up.

That’s why he’s producing shows, writing easy-to-handle histories, and still talks about finishing his ‘Dunk and Egg’ series... all goals he can actually achieve while doing the bare minimum to publish the next book in a series he knows he can’t finish.

We might get tWoW, but much of it was likely already written for the 5th book, and any progress he’s made since then has made him realize how far out of hand things got, and we DEFINITELY won’t get “A Dream of Spring,” period.

You say that as if you wouldn't buy TWOW and gobble it up immediately

Hands-down I’m buying it on release day and will have it finished inside of a week.

And I’ll love it. And I’ll be thrilled at the ways the book begins to diverge from the show. And I’ll love the ways the book goes into so much more detail about the Alter of the Others than the show did.

But then I’ll get mad at GRRM for dragging his feet, because I know it’ll take until at least 2035 to get the ‘final’ book.

I stopped watching the series once it started to pass the books.
I didn't see the last two seasons and am still in the dark on most things.

It's okay to envy me.

You didn't miss much. The show devolved into garbage. That being said, I believe most of it won't actually have spoiled what George has planned for the books the two had diverged so much by the time it ended. So you should feel free to watch and laugh at the last two seasons without worrying about spoiling yourself.

My heart skipped a beat when I saw this thread bumped. Now I'm bummed. ☹️

The Malazan Book of the Fallen. 10 book series, very well written, and shares lots of fine qualities with aSoIaF. "Whiskeyjack" is actually one of the main characters.

Almost nine years ago (!!!) Whiskey recommended the Malazan Book of the Fallen series to me in the above-quoted post. So, I read the first book, Gardens of the Moon, and I liked it, but it's dense and dark and it took a while to get through, so I decided to read some other stuff before continuing. A couple of years later, I picked up the second book, Deadhouse Gates, and I had the same reaction: it was good, it scratched the cool-fantasy-series itch, but it was so dense and dark that I figured I would take a break from the series before continuing.

At the start of the year, something made me pick up the third book, Memories of Ice, and so far it is *awesome.*

Whiskey said in a different post somewhere on this site that people who get through the third book typically end up finishing the series. I think I can see why. As the author packs more layers on to the mythology/history/anthropology of the world, he's finally got me hooked. I'm plowing through this one in a way that I never did with the first two. Thanks for the rec, Whiskey!

Glad you're enjoying them! Would love to read your thoughts on it once you're done.

This was an epic thread. Just wasted a bunch of time re-reading through. Lots of highlights, but my favorite at the moment is Wooly deriding us all as nerds, and then finally getting pulled in himself by the show.

Same. Although, unlike Wooly, you guys were such nerds and losers, I didn't even feel the need to comment, let alone even enter the thread. I think I started watching the show in '16. Loved it and was sad it ended!

But this was definitely how I pictured this thread:
