Question: Do the coaches like living in the Notre dame area? I assume the cost of living is low. Balis needs to stay. Pay him. What is the cost of living. Like near LSU?
once you start making over a million it starts to come down with do you like where you live do you like your neighbors etc. how many of these guys would like to stay? Imo ND is second only to Bama in launching assistants out there into the world. Tommy can go. Can’t imagine it would be tough to replace him. Bring up the RB coach.

The way these guys are talking about getting outspent by LSU is fucking depressing. Who tf are we.

Kelly isn't worth $14 million a year or whatever. If they are skimping on facilities or something it's a different matter, of course.

Yes, “screwed over” the trash QB who continues to be awful and won’t get drafted by playing the very good QB who won a ton of games and made an NFL roster.

How good would Book be on BC? Phil stays another year and gets drafted the year later while Book is scrambling to hang onto a practice squad gig.

To be fair, they made Kelly the second highest paid coach in sports history. Only Belichik makes more.

What was Kelly making here? $3M? I’d get was that underpaid relatively speaking with the kind of money that ND has then shame on Jack and ND.

Exactly. If Saban got that much, fine. But the best team BK has ever beaten was 2013 MSU. This played to his ego and he wants that title of highest paid. Nobody wants to turn that money down, but this is more about BK ego than pocket book IMO.

Phil is bad at football. Full stop. There is no evidence that he is good. There are plenty of QBs who look good and play well on bad teams. I can name literally dozens.

Phil is barely a D1 player, and that’s only because he’s an athlete. He is terrible passer with clunky mechanics.

The problem was ND recruiting a bad QB, not refusal to play said bad QB.

ND’s winningest coach ever just bolted to LSU,… I’m not sure how to react to that regardless of the money… the next coach must be a home run… probably now or never given where cfb seems to be going. I guess I’m in wait and see mode,… other than just numb

Do we think Kelly went back to Swarbrick with this number or was dead set on leaving regardless?

Man LSU fans are hating this hire. At least on twitter it seems 95% negative. Thought it would be more 50/50. Although it's all "he's never coached in the SEC bullshit". But still...

His total compensation last year was around 7 I think. ND does not report salary information accurately because a lot of the compensation package comes from outside sources but I had hear that his deal was around 5 base with good incentives.

I've been wondering the same thing. I doubt he negotiated with ND. Probably just saw this as a last chance opportunity (at 60 yrs old) and went for it.

Agree with all of this. I would try to move heaven and earth to keep most of the staff intact that matters on defense + promote Lance Taylor + keep Balis. Balis is the most important piece to keep by far.

Unironically: thank you for your service. He was in this job a long time, by ND standards and by modern CFB standards in general. He was relatively successful; the program is in better shape than we he got here. He also probably took it as far as he could. I think this is more a thing running its course than a disaster. If he left in 2013 or whenever that was that he was flirting with NFL jobs that would have been a disaster. I’m not mad.

Balis is a Chicago guy and keeps frozen Lou malnattis in his office freezer, per kmet. He lives and breathes ND so I'm guessing it'll take a huge pile of money to get him to baton rouge....soooo who you guys think we can get to replace him?

My guess is BK probably thinks he has a better shot at winning a national title at LSU and went for it, it’s a total bitch move that he didn’t tip his hand to anyone but it is what it is.

I love Notre Dame and always will but this should never happen at ND, the fact that it did happen makes me believe that big time coaches don’t see ND as a realistic shot to go and win a national title at anymore

Anyone else think the random walker Howard interest a month ago is just coincidental?

Well we will find out if Swarbrick is worth our faith in the coming days,…

we will also find out if what I’ve been saying for a few years now about the next guy will have to be the one to take the next step has anything to it in the coming years

Also another thing to think about is how Michigan state reset the coaching salary market. Honest question are Riley and Kelly still coaching at ND and Oklahoma if Michigan state doesn’t give out that monster contract?

Maybe we can get longo back and hire Charlie’s son as the OC and let his dad pay him.
