Leg / Ankle usually means a fibula break at the ankle.

Those were not kind to Malik, McKinley or Jarrett Grace

I was just watching ESPN and they were dishing out preseason awards, and Liufau was nominated for the "Take it to the next level" award.

That was painful to watch.

BK was talking with confidence this morning w/regards to Bertrand but I can't help but think we're missing out on a special player here.

Heartbroken for the young man. And, selfishly, I can't get over not seeing him play this year.

Kelly compared Marist's injury to Jaylen Waddle's from 2020 that sidelined him for our last game against 'Bama. Didn't stop the Dolphins from drafting Waddle at 6th, so here's hoping the talk about him getting back to 100% is true.

Agreed. I'm excited to see what Bertrand can do because by all accounts he has been too good to keep off the field this year, but by all means, people were acting like Marist was a complete game wrecker type this off season and that his ability to move about on the field was going to make him a big piece in making this an elite defense. Made it seem like he was the next great LB. Maybe even another Butkus type.

He also just seems like a great young man. His teammates really seem to like him.

Hope for his full recovery.

Sucks. Hopefully not a long recovery for him.

Sucks, but I think JD will be a true "next man up" and perform at "about" the same level Marist would have.
I also think Marist is going to recover well and have a great 2022 (and maybe 2023)!

I think you're right overall, JD will play solid but Marist seems to have a knack for making big plays. Losing him and a big play here or there could swing a game this year.

It's football though. Use what you got.

I expect Bertrand to be solid. Tackle machine, assignment correct, etc. but this seems very doubtful, IMO. I mean, Liufau was really the only 3 down LB that never came off the field in sub packages. So, I don't think it's a stretch to say they viewed him as the most valuable or important of the LB group. The expectation is that his role will be split between multiple players now. I don't see how we could view them as such, when the staff didn't view them as such prior to this.

Matt Freeman called him the next great ND LB. I don't think he said that because the performance between him and Bertrand was negligible.

Agreed with all of this . . . But it's nice to see JD get some burn. Wonder if Kiser could play Will or Moala if he wasn't coming off an injury?

All possible but I think its doubtful we'll see much of that. I think we'll see Botelho fill some of the void in sub packages and Bertrand take a majority of the base Will snaps. Where Liufau could provide both the pass rush and blitzing aspects of Botelho and the side line to sideline tackling of Bertrand.

Did anyone ask Kelly how Shayne has been looking? If he can play up to his potential, he could still be a heck of a rotational player. If he's not ready though, that's where the talent drop could be a little concerning.

From what I've read from today, I don't believe he made any specific comments on Simon.

I'm sure they don't want to put pressure on him to come back, but Kelly said same injury Waddle had and he came back to some extent for the championship game. His injury happened almost 2 months later. Assuming everything goes well maybe will be back for a playoff run or last game or 2.

Actually ran into Marist and I believe his parents today. Although casted up and in a wheelchair, looked to be in good spirits. I didn’t realize how long his frame is, like scratch your knees while standing long.

Yea, one his traits that made him such an effective blitzer. Now that he got 229 on that frame it was time to eat.

I believe there was one play in the live scrimmage that the media got to watch where Liufau blitzed, pressured Coan to throw, tipped Coan's pass up in the air, caught it himself, and would've ran it in for the pick 6.

Sounds like a trimalleolar fracture/dislocation. Usually need to stabilize the fibula with a couple of screws. Then it is all how disrupted the soft tissues are. He’s young and should heal quickly

Can be, but more from ligamentous disruption than boney injury. Without surgery the ankle tends to be unstable. Usually people do really well without last effects. But usually they are not playing D1 ball. Should be in a boot pretty quick after surgery
