Having recently watched the “Malice in the Palace” documentary on Netflix, I started thinking about Ron Artest and his official visit to Notre Dame. Apparently, “something” happened on the visit, but I’ve never been able to find out what happened. Somebody knows….

You can tell news and updates are slow coming when you start discussing triple and quintuple options and who the 3rd RB is going to be.

That stupid story about the Fighting Irish and Leprechaun being offensive is back in the news.
Clearly teams with Tigers as their mascot are more offensive as Tigers are only found in captivity in the USA which the Tigers don't like (they would prefer to be in their natural environment) and it promotes poachers.

Next they’ll tell us the Shamrock is offensive.

This is a good answer by the school IMO
Our symbols stand as celebratory representations of a genuine Irish heritage at Notre Dame," the school added, "A heritage that we regard with respect, loyalty and affection."

In describing the history of the mascot's name, Notre Dame explained that "Fighting Irish" highlights how resilient Irish people are.

"In both the upraised fists of the leprechaun mascot and the use of the word 'fighting,' the intent is to recognize the determination of the Irish people and, symbolically, the university's athletes," the school said.

I'm glad to see the University is standing their ground. It still isn't clear who the "offended" persons even are. Who took the survey? I don't know a single person with Irish heritage (obviously I'm one of them) who is offended by any of this. Leprechauns aren't real, so that's an important thing to point out, too.

And Ireland doesn't seem too offended by any of this, either, as evidenced by their tendency to invite us to Dublin every decade or so to profit off of the horrible "Fighting Irish" brand.

Obviously, I completely understand the movement here and am glad to see teams like the soon to be "Cleveland Guardians" and the Washington Football team doing the right thing. But woke Americans taking a survey and pointing the target at ND, deciding this should be offensive to others.... why? I ask again, who is actually offended?

I guess it all depends on your perception. Some "wokes" like to take things to the extreme. Personally, I never saw the Cleveland Indians, Washington Redskins, etc. as offensive describing a bunch of murdering savages, but more along the lines of a proud ethnicity and heritage much like the way ND describes Fighting Irish.

Nobody. It was a survey to rank mascots from most to least offensive. The survey didn't indicate that anybody actually found it offensive. It was an exercise conceived to generate clickbait.

The survey has garnered national attention, which is the actual joke here. The survey got what it wanted, but it's outlets like the IndyStar, CBSSports, NY Post, etc. that are running with it that is the most frustrating part.

Just another example of the media being unresponsible and posting articles to get clicks…….assuming that the average reader will not take the time to really review the information for accuracy. It will pass but it is beyond frustrating.

This. Its media manipulation to try and get everyone to be upset about something nobody cared about in the first place.

Which we're all playing into by discussing it here. The only way to beat this shock jock bullsh!t is to ignore it. Anything else means they've won, as they successfully "moved the needle" and generated the clicks they were looking for.

I mean wouldn't we have to go as far as cancelling the clovers and leps on St paddy's too? I believe all of that is American commercialization.

I am undecided if the Michigan Wolverines is more offensive than the USC Trojans - they both are easily tops as most offensive to me but I really can't pick just one. They should both be forced to change their names to "Soy Boys" - maybe that would help.

Allegedly there is a "big announcement" coming tomorrow at 9 AM.

Also, apparently ND fucked up some sort of licensing deal and has to give back nearly a thousand jerseys to Under Armour because they can't legally sell them at the momemt?
