Notre Dame needed a big-time defensive tackle in this class and it got one in Norfolk (Va.) Lake Taylor four-star Darnell Ewell.

The 6-4, 295-pounder, a Top150 recruit from the class of 2017, chose the Fighting Irish over offers from Ohio State, Clemson, Michigan, Alabama and many others.

“It was really exciting. The coaches were really, really excited,” said Ewell, thinking back to when he first told the Irish staff. “Believe it or not, after the visits I went on [to Notre Dame, Michigan and Ohio State], I went to White Castle. We talked it over and thought about it. That’s when I knew I found the best school for me and the one I really, really fit in at. Trust me, I really fit in there. This decision was really good for me. They have the academics and football. It was just a really good opportunity that I couldn’t pass on. So, I took it.”

This is really great. No worries about flipping here.

One of the biggest pulls in awhile. Wow. Really, really awesome. Hope we can hold him to the end.

He's very erudite relative to many football players. Definitely seems like he at least appreciates the degree value. His interview described ND in the way of a person who 'gets it.' I doubt he'll bounce.

I see that you took the vocabulary quiz.

I just couldn't believe the hype that he was a lock for us until it happened. This stuff doesn't happen folks. A highly rated DT... from Virginia? Neither part of that sentence is something that is ever followed by "committed to Notre Dame."

These are magical times.

On a BGI podcast Lou was talking about how certain players look "different" from a physical standpoint. By different, he was saying that physically they looked like they play for Alabama and referenced our NC game and what their offensive lineman looked like (DJ Fluker). Lou said that that is what he thought when he saw Daelin Hayes on the practise field. That he just looks different and has that "Alabama" look. I think Darnell Ewell has that look as well. I really do. He certainly gives us some intimidation factor. I love that.

I also watched a Rivals YouTube vid just now. Just before his OV's he had an order that had Ohio State #1 and ND was at #5. BK must've put on a damned good show at his OV. BK for president.

That's a good description. He's definitely not your typical AA DT Doughboy.

Christ he's stacked.

I think he'll make a fine DT but I think is ceiling is as a 3-4 DE. He doesn't look wildly explosive upfield but is great at stacking the O-line and playing laterally. But you never know that might just be what he was taught/scheme. Either way great pickup.

Apparently I completely missed this thread whenever it popped up and was literally oblivious to this kid. Shame on me.

Very exciting. Can't wait to watch his tape and read more about him.

Was not a take on what basis? Seems crazy that any school wouldn't take him.

Did he describe his experience at ND as being sublime?

Otherwise he could be twinzies with Jerry Tillery!

The both are very erudite relative to many football players.

But where Darnell has a decorous disposition, Jerry's borders on jocund!

Don't you agree?

I am so jismatronically ecstatic at this recruit commitment!

Too many DT commits already an in on some higher ranked kids. They may not have room for Cage in there class if things break right with top 5 guys.

They already have Haskell Garrett and Jerron Cage on board with Jay Tufele in the fold as well...an embarrassment of riches

LOL.

Lemming might need to hang it up. Big pick up for ND, but Ewell has a good amount of work to do to see the field.

He is just speaking about talent. Not saying he would perform better than the guys we currently have.

Jay Tuefele is their number one guy and they are in good shape for him. If they land him I think it pushes Cage out and I don't know where he ends up. I don't think it will be ND and I think numbers will be tight by then if OSU adds Tuefel. I think staff is very happy with this class going into the fall.

As a blank slate, physical specimen, who is more talented?

Ewell has also spent more than half of his technical development on being an offensive guard, where by most accounts he is further developed technically. With OL out of the picture, he should have a short ramp up if he's the player he's supposed to be.

I see red-shirt '17, high snap contributor in '18 w/ Cage, Jillery & Taylor.

No Cage in 18 barring a medical redshirt I would think. Unless you mean Cage the Younger.
