RIP Gordie Howe

The best ever. RIP

Great, GREAT player, but not the best ever IMO. Regardless, huge loss for hockey. He'll be in heaven's penalty box for fighting after tallying a goal and assist to complete his hat trick by tonight.

I always thought of him as Hockey's Yogi Berra in that he was so likable and became such an ambassador for the game for so long that he ultimately transcended it.

I'm betting he'll put St Pete into the wall

Winning bar trivia bet.

Where did Gordie Howe score his 1,000 goal?

A great ambassador...he will be missed. I love the old pics wearing no helmet.

The game changed so much from his time. Players got hurt much more frequently, careers were shorter, rules made the game slower.

Despite all of that, he had the longest career of any player, one that he ended with every major record in the books. He defined the game for decades. Gretzky was certainly the great one, but I guarantee that Howe would have done what he did or better in Gretzky's era. But Gretzky wouldn't have done what he did in his.

Super Mario

Mario would come off the bench behind Howe and Gretzky. Howe got to play with his sons. How crazy is that? Griffy Sr. & Jr. played together, but it's easier to play longer in baseball.

We can argue the greatest ever til the cows come home, that's the fun of it, but there are no five guys anywhere that would put Mario on the bench. period. The discussion of GOAT in hockey pretty much always includes Wayne, Gordie, Mario and Bobby, then go from there.

There have been better defenders, there have been better scorers, there have been better hit-men, no one was ever better at doing all three. I agree with Wooly - best ever.

Detroit is not Hockey Town USA without Gordie Howe. RIP.

I would add Maurice Richard and that would be the Mt Rushmore of hockey.

I probably didn't phrase it well. I didn't mean there were five better, just he would come after Wayne and Gordie.

It's okay you think that, don't be too hard on yourself, nobody is perfect....

except maybe Mario.

I'm guilty of this all the time but is it possible for us all to just celebrate people like this and not start comparing them to everyone else the second they die.

Sad, sad, sad. RIP Gordie. What a legend.

Ali now Howe...some say it happens in threes. Hope Jack Nicklaus is well.

He was a Red Wing, but those of us from CT will also remember him as a Whaler. RIP
