The Iron Throne will most likely go to whoever saves Westeros from the approaching ice zombie apocalypse. That's rules out pretty much everyone other than Jon and Dany. There's a mountain of textual evidence suggesting that Jon is the main character, that his is the "Song of Ice and Fire", that he's Azor Ahai, etc. And there are more red flags about Dany with each passing week, so...

I agree. Seems like anything other than Jon would seem contrived.

Am I the only one who finds the whole notion of dragon-riding hokey as hell? Aegon riding Balerion the Black Dread and conquering all of Westeros is badass. Dany riding dragons to defeat the white walkers and save humanity (or whatever she wants to use them for) would be like One Direction breaking records originally set by The Beatles.

I wonder if the dragons will be the main force in the White Walker battle anyway. Why would the Vararyian Armour come to play? I think that if you kill the Night's King (also probably Targarean, for what it's worth) then somehow that renders the rest of them useless. I think it comes down to a one on one fight between Jon Snow and The Night's King. The surprises will come in the details of how we get there, not the end itself.

I could do this all day.

Jon may be a Targaryen by blood, but he is a Stark through and through. There is no way he is going to abandon everything the Starks stand for to join up with Daenarys in some dragon riding B.S.. Just my 2 cents.

In truth, Dany's dragons are probably going to be needed to save the WORLD. Those are higher stakes than conquering Westeros, which is the standard cycle. So while her dragons aren't as awe-inspiring as other dragons of "history," they will likely go down as the most important, so I give some of the hokiness a pass.
That's what I mean. I like that the legends of the past are legends. I don't want to see a swordsman more skilled than Arthur Dayne or a winter worse than The Long Night or a conquest as great as THE Conquest.

The part I struggle with is that Dany just seems out of place when she rides... I will put more stock into the idea of Drogon, Viserion and Rhaegal being ridden by humans when I see that the dragons have been outfitted with special saddles or even armor of some sort. It will feel more *real* to me at that point.
Balerion was hugenormous. Dany rides Drogon like a horse. Aegon I stood on Balerion, who was the size of a whale.

Yeah. If R + L = J is true, which we basically know it is ... well, there is your song of ice and fire right there. Targs (fire) + Starks (ice) = Jon. It might be that simple.

Think so? He looks like he's standing to me.

Regardless, The Black Dread was 200 years old. Drogon will never be that awesome.

Haha... Yeah, when you zoom in, it's clearly a big saddle he's sitting on.

It doesn't change your point though.

How can that be? The Night's King is one of the First Men, probably a Stark ancestor. Targaryens didn't come to Westeros until the time of the Doom. That's like 8,000 years after the Wall was built

In wooly's defense, you apparently can't walk 10 feet in Westeros without tripping over someone with secret Targaryen ancestry.

Yeah for a house that wed brother to sister with some regularity, they also managed to impregnate different branches of every other house along the way.

So Westeros is nothing but the land of Cousin-F'ers.. Except for the Lannisters who like it a little closer...

Dany has gone too far to have some bastard Targarean come in and take the throne, I could easily see her opposing Jon. That seems pretty logical.

I could see Theon helping to kill Euron, giving the armor to Jon, and pledging to him. It's how he will redeem himself for being a traitor.

This would be awesome

Yeah I've always had trouble coming to grips with this, even though I think it's going to happen. Just out of necessity he does it?

That's a good point, although... I thought all great houses date their families back to that time. Including the Targareans? Oh well. I'm just taking that from the fact that there doesn't seem to be any importance to being Bran the Builders brother. Where being a Targarean has impact. But you're probably right.

is it feasible jon snow takes out the nights king (and his minions) FIRST...setting up the final, final battle as Jon vs. Dany and her dragons?

is season 7 only going to be 7 episodes?
heard/read this somewhere recently.

I agree with you. It was just my unclear attempt at explaining why I give some of the hokiness a pass, while simultaneously valuing the mystique of Westerosi/Valyrian history.

(Any and everything about Old Valyria really gets my rocks off.)

The only hokiness I can't get past is that it just feels forced when Dany is actually riding Drogon. It will seem more natural and real to me when a point is made that she's actually mastering it, and not just *doing* it. I want to see the dragons get fitted with saddles and armor that Tryion designs.

I need an "arming of the hero" scene, but for the dragons. THEN it will feel less goofy to me.

Just gonna have to watch "The Door" again, and see what the first White Walker looked like while he was tied to the tree. I know he had blonde hair, but if he has purple eyes? That's the answer right there.

No purple eyes. Though Benioff and Weis haven't bothered to do that for any of the Targaryens:

Also, something I've always been unclear on:

I thought the wights were the White Walkers, and that what everyone refers to as White Walkers are actually Others.

Or is it:

EDIT:

Nvm, I confused myself. White Walkers = Others.

Wights = The Undead, product of White Walker Mayhem

White Walkers are the same as The Others. Just two names for the same thing. White walkers go from living beings into white walkers.

Whits are created from dead beings raised from the dead by the Night's King.

Btw I've been playing Crusader Kings 2 with a GOT mod and it. is. EXCELLENT.

Crusader Kings is much more about politics and intrigue (and is really hard to figure out) than games like Total War, which is perfect for ASoIaF play. The thing I am having the most fun with is the fact that you can start in any year you want, as anyone you want. Want to be King Robert immediately after the rebellion and see how long you can maintain his rule? Or do you want to be Aegon and take over the Seven Kingdoms? It's all done really really well.

I think part of the thing that confused me is how vastly different the Night's King and his Inner Circle look as compared to the other White Walkers.

The Night's King and his entourage look much more humanoid than the White Walkers, which is why I thought they might actually be Others. I'm sure that's just part of the fact that they are the OG's, whereas the White Walkers are their creation.

wait...so the guy tied to the tree, punched thru the chest with the dragonglass was only "the first white walker"...and is not the Nights King? I thought we were witnessing the creation of the Nights King, who then created the rest of em.

You thought right. The actor who gets stabbed with the dragonglass dagger is billed as "The Night's King".

Some of this also gets a little confusing when trying to keep the show and books straight. In the books, the Night's King was the 13th Lord Commander of the Night's Watch and there are all the stories about him taking an Other woman as a wife and so on. As far as I can recall, that hasn't been discussed in the show.

So yeah, who knows

If she looked anything like they portray her in the book, do you blame him?

What's the worst thing about banging a white walker?

Sometimes yes means snow... Ay-O!
