I'll be in the car on the way to vacation tomorrow.

That means 5 hours of the old Fire Emblem on my old Gameboy, followed by 5 hours of the new Fire Emblem on my new Gameboy.

Re: Battlefield 1. I hope the game actually has some trench warfare instead of playing the exact same as a modern shooter with a early 20th century coat of paint.

Unfortunately it looks like that won't be the case based on that trailer. I want new mechanics, not "oh it's a biplane instead of a jet.... that's... neat."

P.S. Dark Souls 3 is the best game of the console generation so far. Very disturbing to me how many people don't play those games. Masterpieces.

I have never played Dark Souls game. Is that going to be a problem if I want to play this one? Also, how extensive is the "role-playing." In other words, will I be able to make choices that affect the game?

To the first question: No, it shouldn't be a problem. The thing about Dark Souls is that you are going to suck at first. That's just a fact. There are not a lot of games where your stamina bar is more important than your health bar, and it's difficult to get your head around the pace of combat. But largely I think the difficulty of Dark Souls is overplayed. It demands your respect and your attention, but if you play correctly (cautiously) you will be fine.

To the second question: You can and will effect the world but it's extremely unlikely that you will understand the effect of your actions on your first playthrough. Dark Souls story is very different than most games. It's less about a narrative and more about trying to piece together what's going on in the world by using the the environment and item descriptions.

Think of it this way, Dark Souls is a game about the GOT universe about two hundred years AFTER the Others won the war. Most people still alive are either insane or are gods that have seen their world die. You are attempting to sift through the rubble and dead bodies and are discovering the politics and plot of Westeros through clues from the past.

That's where I found it. And haha, lost half of the family to cholera and the other half drowned.

Sounds like your party leader decided to use his family as a raft. I tried a handful of times to beat the high scores over the years by going on the hardest difficulty and surviving. I always had two outcomes: I made it to the end with everyone dead, no clothes on my back, and little in the cart which ended up giving me a low score. The other outcome was my cart broke down 50 times along the way, everyone still died, and we ran out of time due to all the stops. The game can be brutal.

To the second question: You can and will effect the world but it's extremely unlikely that you will understand the effect of your actions on your first playthrough. So there's a strong RPG element to Dark Souls? I've wanted to play the games, been waiting for a good Steam sale before I dive in. I've been pretty disappointed with the scaled back quest options and abuse of "But thou must!" dialogue trees in Fallout 4, they really stripped that content out from the most recent game. I love a game that gives you options on how to complete quests and gives you dialogue options that affect the game as a whole. It adds so much to the game, especially when it comes to replay value.

Speaking of Fallout 4, anyone try out the new and "improved" Survival mode? I've started a new character to try it out, and I have to say I'm impressed for the most part. Taking away fast travel has an interesting impact on the game. The POI's are all the same, but you find yourself coming across little things that you didn't know existed with all the travel on foot. For instance, there's probably no less than 12 little caches of hidden goods or encounters around Sanctuary and I probably only ran into half of them until now. Some are little hidden locations with supplies, others are random NPCs like a hostile Settler in a clearing with a shooting range that I didn't know existed.

The hardest thing for me has been the whole "You can't save until you sleep" change. Even in New Vegas' Hard Mode you could always Quick Save and reload if something really, really bad happens. You don't get that option in the new Survival mode, beds become a real necessity. The worst part is...if you constantly sleep for 1 hour increments for saving purposes you end up getting a Fatigue debuff (Even if you end up sleeping 8 hours prior to all the "cat naps" or even after you get the debuff). So, I end up spending a full in game day doing everything I can and only do my sleeping at night. You end up having to plan each day out, decide how far you're going to go, and if you're leaving home you have to have a plan for sleeping. The worst part is only a decent bed will grant you 5 hours of sleep or more, slumming it on a mattress in a bad place won't give you a full night's sleep. It's an interesting concept, and it greatly changes the way I've played the game.

There's a lot more that's been added. Of course there's the hunger and thirst requirements. I typically only eat at the start of a day, but in the beginning it can be hard to find enough food to sustain your hunger until you get a decent farm going at Sanctuary. For water you have to fill beer bottles and Nuka Cola bottles in the river and then boil the Dirty Water on the fire until you get a Well going. Even letting your thirst barely get to "Parched" will decrease a SPECIAL stat by one point.

Endurance has actually become a useful SPECIAL skill now due to the increased effect radiation has. I'm starting to take the Lead Belly perk for the first time, and there's two reasons for this: Most food gives you radiation other than cooked meats, and you do NOT want to take Rad Away unless you absolutely have to as it now gives you a debuff that makes you more susceptible to diseases for awhile. The other reason is because Endurance allows you to swim in water without picking up Rads...and they've increased the radiation you pick up while in the water. Until I get that perk I've avoided any and all rivers or lakes, it adds up fast now (10 Rads a second if you're submerged, 5 if you're wading through it).

The biggest thing though is probably the addition of diseases! Diseases have really upped the difficulty, Antibiotics have become one of the most important things you can craft, it's almost necessary that you pick up the first Perk in Chemist so you can make them. Just scouting and clearing the immediate area around Sanctuary I contracted no less than 4 different diseases that required Antibiotics to remove. Typically this is an infection or illness contracted from fighting Molerats, but I also picked up Parasites just sleeping in a normal bed! Infections are particularly nasty, as they spread very quickly and take large chunks of your health out each time they spread...inevitably killing you I assume if you don't cure them quick enough (Got down to 5% health in a matter of minutes). Consequently, taking Chemist also means you need 7 Intelligence which can hurt Idiot Savant builds, but to be honest that isn't a big deal. Having played two characters through the end of the game now, one with high Int and one with 1 Int and Idiot Savant, I've found that both characters reached the 70s and both characters did basically every quest. The biggest difference between the two is the Idiot Savant did no Settlement building, that could have added maybe another 10 levels, but at Level 70 another 10 levels is basically nothing.

Other than the above listed, the new Survival Mode has added some interesting dynamics to combat. The fact you do more damage, and the enemies do more damage too, fights have been going much quicker (One way or another). I've actually been picking which battles I want to fight and which ones I want to avoid. I avoid Molerats unless my character is starving and needs meat because Molerats carry too many diseases. I actually ran from some Mirelurks and brought them back to Sanctuary because they fucked me up good and I couldn't kill them with the lack of bullets I had (Fortunately Preston picked up the Minigun I placed in the Sanctuary Workshop and made quick work of them ). Survival Mode has also put a premium on Stealth (Mostly because of the increased damage you take and possible diseases/infections if you get hit). I had a lot of fun playing around with a Luck build on my last run through, but I simply don't have the points to drop into Luck on this new player yet as I'm focusing on Sniper and Stealth perks for survival.

That's basically Survival in a nutshell. There's some other caveats, like the added "Adrenaline" extra damage you do every time you get a kill (Lasts until you sleep), or the fact companions don't automatically revive after combat (You HAVE to hit them with a Stimpack or Robot Repair, otherwise they go home), but that's the long and short of it. I've been careful and haven't died more than a couple times, but when you do it's costly. I had a Radscorpion spawn on top of me and kill me in seconds, ended up losing 30 minutes of game play which just doesn't happen to me typically with my usual abuse of Quick Save. If anyone has been putting off Settlement building, Survuval mode would be a good time to work on it as the better beds when traveling are a necessity, it's nice to have safe houses. I've considered moving all Settlers to Sanctuary though and leaving the other Settlements empty so I don't have to actually protect them. I really don't relish the idea of having to travel in real time across the map to protect a settlement getting attacked. Overall the new Survival Mode has been pretty cool, it's showing me little nooks and places in the game that I never saw before, and it's changing my approach and thought process because of the food/water/sleeping/disease factors. It almost adds a new RPG element as it forces me to play as a real "Sole Survivor" and think before I proceed with some missions and plan my routes.

One thing about Dark Souls is that the story/plot are largely in the background, at least in respective to other RPGs. It doesn't matter if you played the first games or not. Other than the main quest, which is to defeat the lords of cinder, little information is given about the missions, characters, world etc. And its designed like that-- even the online wiki is mainly speculation and assumptions by hardcore fans.

To this I will add, if you dont mind minor spoilers you might wanna look up the possible actions of the game. Like I said about the plot being in the background, secondary quest in this game are extremely subtle. You don't even realize that just talking to a character at a certain time will trigger an event later in the game. Or that going back to a region that you already completed after a certain point in the game will unlock a possible event that you only have a narrow time span to access. There are like 4 possible endings in the game, and to activate all but the generic one requires some serious tedious actions in a specific sequence that would be almost impossible for most fans to achieve without guidance.

Its an extremely good game though, with a strong cult following. It may have the greatest melee (as in swords/spears/axes etc) combat mechanics ever. Personally, I would put it right behind Witcher 3 as best new gen gaming experience.

Just my opinion, but I would actually advise against this. Looking up spoilers takes away a lot of the drama and mystery of the game IMO. It's refreshing to me to occasionally play a game and not be sure if you're doing the right thing or not. I'm getting really really close to beating DS3 for the first time and I'm sure I've missed out on 85% of the potential character interactions, but I think that first playthrough is sacred. When I start up new game plus I'll break out a wiki. (I really want to know what happened to Siegward.) Also I'm pretty sure I'm about to do the "Dark" ending which I just figured out on my own so it's definitely possible to do that.

Witcher III is on sale on Steam right now for 50% off ($24.99). Might be the lowest I've seen it since release, good time to jump on it. If you're interested in expansions, you can also get the game /w an expansion pass for $48 on sale.

In other news, I've been playing through Far Harbor DLC for Fallout 4 the last few days. I've toured most the island, and I'm finishing up the main quest now, just a few sidequests and locations left to find. I've got probably 15-20 hours into it the last few days, it's pretty good for a DLC, much longer than the previous two DLCs. There's a couple new weapons: Harpoon Rifle, Lever Action Rifle, and a Radium Gun (Shoots .45 rounds /w radiation damage). There's also a few melee hook type weapons. Armor-wise there's some Marine armor and some "Trapper" armor that uses the shells of Mirelurks it looks like

The DLC is pretty heavy Maine based, lots of fishing/trapping/sailor references and outfits. There's some new enemies on the island, in addition to variations of Super Mutants, Mirelurks, Ferals, and a hostile human "Trapper" faction. The quests leave some variations to completion, and there's 3 main factions on the island, so there's some options on how to finish the main quest. Not sure if it's quite worth the $25 for those that didn't get a Season Pass, but if you did purchase a Season Pass while they were on sale then it was worth it. Pretty decent DLC overall.

[EDIT] Just found a hidden Vault, Vault 118, in a location that wasn't tied to any quests. I'm hoping it's one of those crazy vaults.

Do you ever play marriage ulk?

Not when the wife works. Right now she's doing 3rd shift again and sleeps during the day mostly. I do watch the kids while she's sleeping though, which lets me play games like "Cook: WTF Do I Make for Lunch Edition," "Diaper Changer 2016," and frequently "WWE 2K16" which involves me power bombing and choke slamming the kids on the spare bed.

Anybody playing Overwatch on PS4? I'm terrible but it's really addicting. I'd like to get a team going if possible because teamwork is really necessary.

Isn't that the best game? It's fun to let a toddler wrestle you before reminding them that you're capable of tossing them across the living room into a couch full of pillows. Then your wife scolds you for throwing the baby in the house.
