Man I hope this was about letting the landscape settle, and picking the best place that would allow him to get immediate PT, develop into an NFL talent, and at a place that met his academic goals.

If I were 30 something playing this game...and impervious to recruiters and their promises, what a great way to play it. And yea the more nefarious implications aren't lost on me, but I also think there is plenty of room for the kid to still be on the up and up here.

I don't think he is doing anything underhanded or what not, just that from ND's perspective, I think we as outsiders got this recruitment very wrong and were supported by information reported from hi scamp with questionable reliability. At this point I dont see any way he signs with ND.

Maybe he wants to be close to Stanford so he can transfer there. Like Rudy.

lol Cal actually gets a bunch of official visitors because when they find out a kid has a stanford offer and has set a visitor they offer the recruit and then tell them "why not visit us while you are in the area"

He is not coming to ND. I would be surprised if he is even qualified academically at this point. Him signing on with Cal is a huge red flag IMO. Cal's graduation rate for football players is atrocious. One of the worst IIRC.

It's so weird because Cal is one of the better universities in the entire world. But apparently they could care less if their players graduate.

If it were under the table money driving this wouldn't he be at UGA, Bama or OSU? This is a complete wtf. Has he even been to the state of California or is he just watching David Lee Roth videos and can't get it out of his mind?

respectful got thrown out the window a long time ago....not worried about it.

he'll sign with Urban next week and we'll be able to officially move on.

I would assume a school would not get in trouble for their unlimited contact...only if they publicly talked about the recruit.

It's alright. Cal can take the secondary infraction and self-impose a scholly lost for a year for a vacant spot in their 85 just for a shot at him. They're probably selling the "sunny California without the rigors of Stanford," which is complete bullshit. Overcast Berkley is not Southern California. Hell it's not even close to the parts of the city you'd want to go easily. And Cal is one of the worst schools for an undergraduate student athlete in the country; doubly so if you're black.

I try never to "check out" of a kids recruitment, regardless of high school ratings, but this is about as close as I get. This recruitment seems like it just went over the line. And this isn't NAM, guys, there are rules.

Also, what are Cal's standards for the football program?

I know it must be low. Just the thought of Marshawn Lynch going to "school" there seems laughable.

So let me get this straight - schools get punished if a kid fills out papers for more than one and don't get picked? That is ridiculous, how are they culpable for someone else's actions? Why not have two or three kids do this every year to your rivals and F them up?

Correct. If you are gonna have a kid sign it's in your interest to be sure he's gonna be loyal.

It allows them unlimited contact. If they did not want to have unlimited contact with him, then they are under no obligation to allow him to sign those papers.

Literally the bare minimum, they will take anyone who passes the NCAA clearinghouse.

Seen a report a few years back and Cal was close to the top for athletic waivers. Makes some sense as the school itself appears to have pretty tough requirements for regular students. But that grad rate for athletes... not pretty.

Cal to tighten academic standards for athletes - SFGate

This is a good primer. Keep in mind the numbers for African-Americans are even lower than the team average that was 44% a few seasons ago (2012, 111th out of the 120 FBS teams. Notre Dame was #1 with 97%). I don't have the article in front of me anymore, but Cal was also blasted for cherry picking an athlete schedule that was almost comical in how easy it was.

If anyone can find the article, I know the graduation rate for African Americans on the football team was lower than 44%. Much lower if I recall correctly.

Is Cal selling him on being the next Bryce Treggs? 5 star WR that no one ever heard about after he went to Cal?

Didn't care a month ago.

This kid is the exact reason I don't get to involved emotionally in recruiting.

Step 1: Get the kids that want to be here

Step 2: Coach them up

Step 3: Kick ass

Yellow flags with this kid. Been saying it for over a month.

Get in line.

Agree. Is it actually over though? Would love to see a scenario where Hunter Johnson is throwing passes to Chris Clark and Robertson. Not sure what team they could all end up on but it's fun to dream.
I have a feeling this story has a few more twists in it yet to come, but to be honest, i don't care anymore.

No way it's over. The way this has been going, we have a few more chapters.

Just when you thought the ride was over.

Bryce Treggs actually had a really nice career at Cal. He was kind of over-shadowed by other WR's that probably took advantage of his presence to make things happen, but he wasn't the no-name guy that you insinuate.

Best year was 900 yards and 7 TDs I think. And that's with no competition at WR. In the PAC 12. That doesn't catch my eye at all for a guy who's a 5-star (considering there are like 20 a year). That's me though.

Fuller had ~ 1,200 yards and 13 TDs for 2 straight years. That's significantly more production for a college WR, and Will was basically a nobody in high school.
