its a no brainer, keep Chase on the roster in 2016 and then in 2017 you have Kmet and Wright ready to go

Kelly loves vets. His coaching experience must give him pretty strong reason for this. Our conversation might be more irrelevant than usual. [i.e. having nothing to do with Coach's decisions, as usual, but even flat wrong on "value seen".]

So apparently Chase is going to use his 6th year somewhere else? Anybody know this or am I just behind the news?

That would seriously suck.

I wonder if they give Jamir Jones a shot at TE then. Because we are awfully thin there now.

Or we don't use TE sets. Use our bigger WRs or an extra ol in short yardage.

Taking the sixth
Notre Dame tight end Chase Hounshell tweeted on Twitter, somewhat cryptically, on Tuesday about the NCAA granting him a sixth year of eligibility.
Hounshell confirmed Tuesday to the Tribune, though, that it won’t be at Notre Dame. The former defensive lineman, who had his first career start and first career catch both in 2015, said he’ll be taking visits over the next couple of weeks to determine where he’ll take a grad school-style transfer.
The 6-foot-5, 255-pounder from Kirtland, Ohio, hopes to have his final decision at the end of that two-week period.

I haven't followed this a whole lot, but he's good enough for them, but we basically pushed him out?

There are only a few teams I would not like to see an ND guy transfer to and tOSU is one of them. You can't really blame him though. He should see some PT there and you have to admit that they're about as high profile a team there is the last few years.

If their TE situation is as sketchy as some suggest, maybe he'll even get more PT than you might think. Eh, who knows? Good luck to the young man.

He said he was going there to be a featured tight end, and that wouldn't happen at ND, particularly with Smythe and Jones ahead of him. Paraphrase, but his words.

does he have a twin sister?
could have sworn she tweeted/posted something that he either said or did that instantly had me thinking this kid just isn't going to be a good fit for ND (it was back when he was a HS recruit).

Turns out he was a pretty good fit, as he was at the school for 5 years and will leave with a Notre Dame degree, I'd say that's pretty good.

meh. i'd never go play for that team especially on the heels for them beating us in a new years bowl where one of their players cheap shots our team leader into a career ending injury. but that's just me you guys are more forgiving. Me, I hold grudges and never forget or forgive.

Good for him, not sure why anyone would "vomit" in there mouth other this. We don't play OSU and we aren't even a rival of them. They have beaten us pretty solid the last couple times we played them and he's an Ohio kid. Happy for Chase hopefully get some solid minutes and learn under the second best coach in the country. Thanks for the effort and giving ND all you had.

It's not that he is playing for TOSU.

It's that he wrote this that makes me vomit.

"I will be transferring to play my last season at THE Ohio State University; with the goals of achieving my Master's Degree, winning a National Championship, and pursuing my NFL dream, there could not be a better University. I am beyond excited to join The OSU family! Go Bucks!"

https://irishsportsdaily.com/s/2170/whats-the-difference-between-notre-dame-and-ohio-state

This is an incredibly good article from ISD, not sure if premium or not. Basically, they ask Chase Hounshell to compare contrast Ohio State/Notre Dame.

The biggest takeaway from the article is that he thinks the programs are run pretty similar, except for "competition":
“Everything was thought-out at Ohio State, but I think their plan was to work you as hard as they could at all times. That was the huge difference in the programs.”

The workouts under Ohio State’s Mickey Marotti were intense and competition-based, something that has arrived at Notre Dame under new Director of Football Performance Matt Balis, who worked under Marotti at Utah and Florida.

“You worked hard at all times of the day at Ohio State,” said Hounshell. “There was always a competition going on and eyes watching you. You’re always just in competition. There is always a winner and always a loser at Ohio State. It made a lot of kids compete.”

The Buckeyes’ competition was team-based but also individual competition on a daily basis. The one-on-one battles are what stuck with Hounshell as it brought out the best in each player every day.

“At Notre Dame, we didn’t have any competition going one-on-one with someone,” stated Hounshell. “At Ohio State, you would walk into the weight room and on the board was who you were going up against for the day. There was a winner and a loser. The loser has to do some type of punishment. You are grinding out every day in the weight room trying to do better than the guy they put you against so you don’t have to do the punishment. That made guys go pretty crazy.”
