Tough break. Hope he heals quickly and 100%, but our success this year is not dependant on him. Jones, however...

It's funny see fans claim there is something wrong with our strength and conditioning program, yet Tranquil came back stronger and faster than ever from his ACL injury. This loss hurts do to depth reasons. How much was Crawford going to play? I'm not sure, but I still find it funny fans complaining we will have another year of Farley yet he led our team in Interceptions and sacks.

Our S&C program is fine. Do we have more injuries than other programs? Probably not. This is a dilemma every coach faces every year. How much contact should you have to prep for the season? Chuck Pagano has the Colts hitting more than in years past. Coaches change it all the time trying to find the right balance.

Not a major loss because the secondary is stacked, but he is my favourite recruit from the 2015 class, hate this. Basically a redshirt year, a minor setback.

This is football, every day you hear about this type of injury (Kelvin Benjamin and Louis Delmas yesterday).. i agree with you. In fact, this injury do not hit ND often.. KLM, Tranquill, Lo Wood? Dayne Crist. Who else? I do not remember many cases.. Fleming had a healthy career at ND and then he had a lot of knee problems in the NFL.

What a shame for the kid. One of, if not the most said freshman name by Brian Kelly all camp. Sounds like he was really ready to step in and help us this year.

Rest up, Shaun. We'll really be needing you in the DB next year when Russell is tearing it up on Sundays.

The other thing is that unless his knee got rolled on, it's unlikely that this was a contact injury. So it probably has nothing to do with how much the team is hitting and initiating in contact during camp.

Even if it WAS a contact injury, it's usually a freak type of contact that causes a knee to get rolled up, so decreasing the amount of physicality in camp is probably not an issue one way or the other.

BK has talked about CJ, ESB and Tillery all more than Crawford.

How do you know Tranquill is faster than before the injury?

And probably Coleman, too. It's a bummer that Crawford is out, but at least Coleman appears to be on the same track to early playing time, and at the same position.

Not a huge depth hit, but definitely a special teams and defensive "packages" hit.

Coleman is slated for nickel, correct?

Crawford has been playing at corner?

No Watkins in the nickel? Is he strickly a backup CB? Haven't heard as much about him as I had hoped this fall.

Nickel is probably Farley #1 with/without this injury, but then it jumps to Coleman with Crawford down. Crawford is just a play maker, so he will be missed even though we may not notice it. He's the kind of guy that can go pick 6. Could have been a bad man in the slot if we needed it.

They also had KRuss taking snaps at nickel.

I think it's the opposite. Coleman has been playing outside when KVR slides over to the nickel, I believe (maybe I read wrong, though), and Crawford was working inside.

Either way though, I think the effect isn't huge at this point, thanks to Coleman's progress and the fact that KVR and Farley can both work at nickel. It does suck to lose Crawford, but he was going to be a coverage specialist on obvious passing downs. ND can still put a good coverage package on the field without Crawford, and early down packages won't be effected much at all by his absence.

Follow with me..

1st team nickel - Farley

2nd team nickel - Russell at nickel. Coleman and Luke at cornerback.

Watkins and Butler have had nice fall camps. They are competing against each other and with Coleman. Coleman is just a different player than those two.

Coleman has long arms, but I wouldn't consider him a lanky corner like Butler. Coleman has more speed and agility than both Butler and Watkins.

Butler and Watkins use their length on the outside to make plays. You can tell both have worked on their press coverage skills, but Butler is just in the wrong scheme. He fits Diaco's scheme, so much better than this one.

Both are bigger corners, so getting them in the slot isn't playing to their strengths.

Obvious passing down defense is what gets you off the field. We won't know the true impact this injury had because he never played a snap in a game but slot cover guys aren't easiest to find.

Awesome! What other players, in addition to Coney, are expected to still dealing with injuries come spring ball?

Reviewing the Redshirts: CB Shaun Crawford - One Foot Down

The only question for 2016 seems to be if Crawford is going to win the No. 2 corner position behind senior Cole Luke or if he'll return to his nickel spot and finally give VanGorder the type of playmaker he's wanted defending the slot. Either way, it seems like Notre Dame wins. Crawford has all the tools to be the most important freshman or redshirt freshman to take the field next season.

More good news has already happened as Crawford was cleared for full participation earlier this month so the staff will have plenty of time to figure out how to use him in 2016.
