Its easy to see why Denson is crushing recruiting right now, great personality and very genuine. When talking about Devin, in Devin's video, he goes "the name says it all, Stud."

Towards the end of the video, he says "He's one of those guys that God created to play football."

Agreed, I posted earlier on this --- Denson is charismatic and comfortable at the same time. He definitely kills it with both the kids and the parents.

Part from the Williams transfer article

Scout: Mykelti Williams exits Irish

However, Kelly said Studstill has been running with the first team much of the past week at free safety, meaning he’s in direct competition with Redfield for a starting job.

Unlike Redfield, who often frustrated with the coaching staff the past three years, Studstill appears to have won over the coaches immediately.

“He’s just a natural player. It comes easy to him,” Kelly said. “Just flows easily to him. It’s not hard to him. He’s had no set back in terms of the learning curve. He had one mistake today, but it really comes easy to him.”

What about Redfield at strong?

I think he'd be really good there but I don't think the coaches have a choice. We basically have 2 FS's, Studstill and Redfield. We have 2 SS's in Sebastian and Tranquill.

We can't move one to the other and create a 3:1 situation. I get there's Perry and some other freshman who'll likely be listed at safety, but the only true freshman that's realistically (knock on wood) going to be playing legitimate snaps at safety this year is Studstill.

I asked Sampson that earlier and he quickly came back with a no, that's Tranquil all day

Tranquill's best position is rehab...he's a beast there. In all seriousness tho, I think he'll be great at SS if he can stay healthy but they gotta have a backup plan given his injury history and I think Max might be the next best option.

Just viewed the Rivals depth chart. I know it's nothing firm, but they have Devin starting ahead of Max.

I really doubt it happens but he will be on the field a lot. Especially if Max struggles, he's on an extremely short leash.

I would never read into preseason depth charts on rivals or 247

I see what you are saying but this has been brought up before I have a hard time seeing a true freshman starting over a 3 year starter in Austin, Texas. I think the staff was just trying to send a message to Max

I think so too. I do like seeing a frosh in the mix though. I just hope it's because Studstill is "that good" instead of Max being so-so, or having other issues.

Maybe we'll see Studstill and Max next to eachother with Tranquill playing his rover/monster underneath on 3rd downs?

If Max and Studstill are our best two safeties (and it would appear they clearly are) it makes sense to get them both on the field at least some of the time.

To start I don't think so but wouldn't be shocked by week 4 or so.

They've been sending a message to Max for a couple of years. Let's see if he finally receives it.

Listening to 24/7 podcast with Loy and Ironside/Sharpley were saying that from the practices they saw and spring game they reckon ND is moving towards more of a single high safety look with Redfield/Studstill back there on their own with Tranquill playing more in the box almost like a 4-4 look (we have seen this before alot vs option teams under BVG)

Also on the BGI podcast they mentioned that BVG seemed to be running alot more press-man coverages this spring ala Dantanio/Chris Ash defenses. Will be interesting to see if this is all true come the summer

This frightens me. We had two safeties failing to patrol the deep parts of the field last year, and now we want to rely on only one?

Tranquill's best position is operating as a freestyle guy in the box, so that's cool. But I'd rather see him doing that as a part-time nickle or dime on third downs in a 3-3-5 or 3-2-6 alignment, that way we still have two safeties deep.

When you split the responsibility it means that sometimes one guy is gonna think the other guy is gonna make a play and sometimes there are comms breakdowns. What if you just say to Max to patrol back there on his own. He can't have a comm breakdown with himself can he? :D

Careful, or he's gonna accept that challenge.

I'm no expert on scheme, but I like the relative simplicity of having one guy with full responsibility for the back end of the defense. Even if our safeties played error-free football--which they have proven incapable of doing in BVG's defense--leaving Tranquill back there by himself is basically the same as leaving no one back there. That's not a knock on Tranquill, he's an excellent football player, he's just playing out of position. Let Redfield and/or Studstill play deep, rep them a ton playing in coverage, and pray that things finally click for Redfield or that Studstill is ready from day one.
