But is Kelly really a great coach? Should Sanford get the coach-in-waiting title?

The good news is that Kelly is willing to sign a six-year deal and continue to live with the standards that Notre Dame demands. It says something about the man when he accepts the academic standards, the character standards, and the pressure of being the football coach at Notre Dame and chooses to stay. If I wanted to see my favorite team win multiple national championships by compromising its standards, I would have chosen a certain team in Ohio or better yet a certain team down south as my favorite team. Instead, I chose to root for Notre Dame when I began following college football in the 1960's. I've watched Notre Dame win a few national championships along the way, but I'm even more proud of the university's commitment to academic excellence and honorable character. When Notre Dame wins its next national championship, it won't be because of compromised values.
Thanks for staying, coach.
Has Kelly hit his ceiling at ND? How can Swarbrick give him such an extension while that mustachioed fool BvG is still on the payroll? Why do we still dump so many resources into recruiting California each cycle? Why does Longo still have a job after three straight years of devastating injuries? Was 9/11 an inside job?
I WANT ANSWERS DAMMIT.
He can walk away at any time without any consequences essentially. It's basically a one-sided deal that he has little to no incentive to turn down.

Excellent deal. I have been on team BK since the beginning. Would be thrilled to see him here for 6 more years.

That's not true? Unless you have specific terms in front of you? I'd imagine it comes with a big buyout that cuts both ways.
And you're intimately familiar with the details how, exactly?
What do you mean? Are you suggesting BK would have to pay ND money if he leaves for another job?

That's exactly what they're saying. Either BK or the people hiring him.
The other team buys out his contract....
So how does some other team paying his buyout impact his life?
My only point is that BK is securing his financial future, which is incredibly smart. It does not mean he is staying for 6 years.

My understanding is that it makes him harder to poach if there are more years left on his contract (more years to pay off for the new team).
The only way it turns into a Weis situation is if something crazy happens and ND fires him next year.
Some teams won't hire people if the buyout is too large, and the more years you leave on the contract, the larger it is.
So if Kelly really planned on jumping ship anytime soon, he IS boning himself because other teams could likely not afford it.
So he either honors his contract and gets paid a huge sum of money or he performs well enough to convince another team to pay the buyout. There is no scenario whatsoever that would cause him to not want to sign a 6 year contract unless he hated Notre Dame and knew he wanted to leave in a year.
I just HATE long contracts for ANYONE. This has nothing to do with BK personally.
