Good for him. This helps with recruiting and hopefully this program can be counted on for 10 or more wins a year.

What's the difference between 4 years and 6 years? Just afraid this might turn into another Weis situation.

The good news is that Kelly is willing to sign a six-year deal and continue to live with the standards that Notre Dame demands. It says something about the man when he accepts the academic standards, the character standards, and the pressure of being the football coach at Notre Dame and chooses to stay. If I wanted to see my favorite team win multiple national championships by compromising its standards, I would have chosen a certain team in Ohio or better yet a certain team down south as my favorite team. Instead, I chose to root for Notre Dame when I began following college football in the 1960's. I've watched Notre Dame win a few national championships along the way, but I'm even more proud of the university's commitment to academic excellence and honorable character. When Notre Dame wins its next national championship, it won't be because of compromised values.

Thanks for staying, coach.

He can walk away at any time without any consequences essentially. It's basically a one-sided deal that he has little to no incentive to turn down.

Has Kelly hit his ceiling at ND? How can Swarbrick give him such an extension while that mustachioed fool BvG is still on the payroll? Why do we still dump so many resources into recruiting California each cycle? Why does Longo still have a job after three straight years of devastating injuries? Was 9/11 an inside job?

I WANT ANSWERS DAMMIT.

That part isn't a joke. 3 straight years and it's not bad luck.

And you're intimately familiar with the details how, exactly?

That's not true? Unless you have specific terms in front of you? I'd imagine it comes with a big buyout that cuts both ways.

Very happy about this. Can't neg recruit this angle anymore and we get to keep a coach who has brought stability to the program. Now let's hope we become a minimum 10-win team for the next 6 years.

I wonder if this was in response to a serious question by a current prospect, or his parent?

Likelihood in order : 1) Davis; 2) Kelly; 3) Robertson; 4) Jones.

Good for CBK, he deserves a raise if you compare what he does & where he does against contemporaries in his tier.. That 10th win probably made him a lot of money and doing it when Charlie fell off the books was fortunate timing.

In the end, a 6 year contract is just a collection of 4 words until the fine print is read. The only thing contracts do in sports is lay out what is guaranteed up front and who gets what when one of the parties leaves the agreement. I'd give this contract a .0128% chance of terming out.

What if like you say he plans on staying four in reality, and that year he wins a natty?

Excellent deal. I have been on team BK since the beginning. Would be thrilled to see him here for 6 more years.

Coach and I don't agree on everything, but all of this is very true IMO, I think coach has grown and evolved in his time here. He is still building the program and I think he has done a pretty darn good job of it. He has done all of this knowing who sets the standards and who has the final say. If you were shopping for coaches you would find Coach Kelly on that "different aisle" as well. I agree with the post above.

Totally agree ND (North Dakota that is). Can anyone say we are worse off for Kelly coming to Notre Dame? No way. The guy has solidified us back into a premiere program and the future is bright. I don't know why anyone would not be happy with this deal. Pumped for more Kelly!

By the way, where you at in North Dakota? Lived in Minot for about 6 months with my in-laws when my wife and I were in between career jobs. Traveled all over state working with BNSF railroad guys during my short stay. Was actually back up there for Christmas with my wife's parents.

This is awesome. It's amazing knowing that after all these years we still haven't truly seen what a Kelly-ran ND offense can look like. We finally have QBs we can trust after the Rees-era/EG and he finally has his guys that he wants/needs in their positions. Just need to get this damn injury-bug off their backs.

Even this Old Man is glowing in happiness about Coach looking to stay the course, and Swarbrick believing that too.

Thank you, Coach, and now that you have quarterbacks who are fully quarterbacks, just get us some linebackers and WATCH OUT to everyone else.

... and Lord knows it's going to be nice to watch NFL football and see ex-Kelly Notre Damers regularly introduced as starters.

He could have walked away after this year. There were plenty of coaching openings, some of them very desirable from a recruiting aspect and without the academic limitations and behavior standards of Notre Dame. Instead, he chose to stay at Notre Dame and sign a 6-year deal. Brian Kelly doesn't walk away from a challenge. He faces it head on.

Love what the coach said, "I coach football because I believe there are few better avenues for impacting the lives of young men..." Exactly why I, myself, coach football. If you want football to be more than a game, you have to make it about more than a game. For me, there is no better classroom to develop young people than on the gridiron.

So how does some other team paying his buyout impact his life?

My only point is that BK is securing his financial future, which is incredibly smart. It does not mean he is staying for 6 years.

My understanding is that it makes him harder to poach if there are more years left on his contract (more years to pay off for the new team).

The only way it turns into a Weis situation is if something crazy happens and ND fires him next year.

Some teams won't hire people if the buyout is too large, and the more years you leave on the contract, the larger it is.

So if Kelly really planned on jumping ship anytime soon, he IS boning himself because other teams could likely not afford it.

It's nice to have some stability for the first time in a few decades. Definitely good for recruiting, now just keep winning.

It doesn't matter if it impacts him personally. It's meant to deter other teams from trying to poach him when they see the huge price they would have to pay in a buyout. Also even if they decide it's still worth it ND makes back some of the money they invested.

Edit: Beau and Tussin beat me to it.

So he either honors his contract and gets paid a huge sum of money or he performs well enough to convince another team to pay the buyout. There is no scenario whatsoever that would cause him to not want to sign a 6 year contract unless he hated Notre Dame and knew he wanted to leave in a year.

I just HATE long contracts for ANYONE. This has nothing to do with BK personally.

If we go 6-6 next year, ND will be scared away from firing BK. That's not a good situation.

After the Weis debacle, I agree with you. But I don't think there is anything to worry about with this one.

1.) I'm sure ND protected itself in case of a Weis-like situation in some way, shape or form.

2.) We know a Weis implosion isn't going to happen. The evidence backs it up.

I think this is a great show of stability from both BK and ND. BK always talks about how he dabbled in the NFL, and how it's not in his wheelhouse, and now he's signed the paperwork to show that he's serious.

Long contracts often happen in soccer in Europe in case somebody want to come in for the coach or player. The compensation payable if there is 2 or 3 years left on the contract is huge. People will sign even if there is a big chance of moving on.

This gives ND security and a payday if proteam does want him later. The downside is that if there is a falling out, like with Weis then ND is landed. They must feel very comfortable with Kelly.
