Will not surprise me in the least if this kid ends up having the best college career of the '16 QBs and it may not even be close. Andrew Luck v2. Really wish he was Irish.

I'd rather have Hunter Johnson in 2017

Tough call. KJ is the best HS QB I've ever seen in person.

In a perfect world, I'd rather have Costello... especially if they were the same age but to be fair, HJ does have that extra year to catch up. More importantly I'd rather have HJ in 2017 than KJC in 2016 for the space it would give the staff between Wimbush and Johnson.

Now, if KJC called Sanford tomorrow and said, ""I've changed my mind and I want to come to ND". I would take it in a heartbeat even if made Johnson go elsewhere because one in the hand is worth more than two in the bush as they used to say.

To me, KJ Costello is as sure of a all timer at the next two levels as LeBron was when he was in high school.

There was one quarterback that I really wanted in this class and that was Haskins. If they want to grab a project QB in this class then thats fine but I don't want someone good enough to make Hunter look else where (unless its Haskins). Notre Dame fans could be getting spoiled going from Zaire, to Wimbush, and then to Johnson.

During his Jr season, he was the best QB I had ever seen in person. He had a down year this year but his team was down across both lines. I still think he's gonna be great.

The next Carson Palmer...

Where the fuck has this decision been? Anyone that watched them both play earlier this year saw that. Stanford just became much more dangerous IMO.

I still think the Irish win because Stanford has taken two steps back defensively, minus Phillips in the middle.

Yeah, no kidding! I still think we win also, but it will be a lot more difficult I think.

I really don't get the concern over Costello starting. He's not a major upgrade over Chryst. Heck, it can be argued that he's not an upgrade at all.

Yes, he had a good game against UCLA and Arizona State. Of course he did, their defenses are ungodly terrible. Chryst did the same thing against Oregon, another bad defense.

Nothing has changed, we still beat them soundly.

Costello>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Chryst so we'll have to agree to disagree there.

We do agree that the Irish win regardless.

Sorry, don't see it.

Costello played pretty well against UCLA, but he didn't light the world on fire. UCLA did most of the damage to themselves with 4 turnovers and horrendous defense, which is par for the course for them. 13 of 19 and 123 yards is okay, but Wimbush had a similar game against Michigan State, who has a much, much, MUCH better defense than UCLA, on top of providing a much greater running threat.

Against Arizona State, he had 15 of 23 and 173 yards and a TD, again not terrible, but hardly scathing. Especially since Arizona State is ranked 95th against the pass. They surrender over 80 more yards than that per game. They surrendered over 550 yards passing and 6 TD's against Texas Tech, and their QB completed 75% of his passes.

Costello just hasn't seen a defense that is close to competent, much less good like ours is. I'll see how he fares against Washington. Even though their offense is complete trash, they can play some defense. What happens when ND gashes their defense and our D is focused on shutting down Love. It's easy to play complimentary when Love is going off on a bad defense, but good defenses can and will contain him and he's gonna have to make plays, because his defense isn't going to help him. That's for sure.

But we're not comparing KJ and Wimbush.

Costello is not a world beater, yet. This decision gives him a lot more game reps before ND. Chryst is terrible and has made Stanford one dimensional. KJ is just a better quarterback with a much better skill set.

Meh, maybe this gives them a chance to win 2 of their next 3 games, thus giving them a more legit ranking. It's opportunity, yo!

Is KJ a runner? I'm literally not worried about any offense that doesn't have a running QB. We've stopped all types of offenses, the only thing I wonder is how we'd do against a QB who can run, because that remains to be seen.

If we "want bama" like some people are delusional enough to believe. Then we should be saying "KJ who?"

Do you really want to lose and miss the playoffs just to avoid Alabama?

In the five games that he has attempted a pass, Costello is 43 of 67 for 492 yards with four touchdown and no interceptions. In his lone start of the season, which came as a result of an injury to Chryst, Costello completed 15 of 24 passes for 173 yards and a touchdown in a 34-24 win at home against Arizona State. In that game, Love ran for 301 yards and three scores.

he obviously brings much more to the table than chryst in terms of passing; however like koon said, IF we are the legit team that we think we are....we shouldn't be worrying WHO is quarterbacking them...they are NOT that great of a team and we SHOULD handle them convincingly as their defense is HORRIBLE this year

KJ Costello played against the 120th ranked defense and the 101st ranked defense. Why worry even a bit?

Elko>>>>>>>>>>Costello>>>>>>>>>>>Chryst

Lol the posts about how we shouldn't be afraid because we're the better team and Elko>KJ>Chyrst are all true and I said that in my initial post.

I never said KJ made Stanford unbeatable. What I did say is that Costello is far more talented than Chryst and made Stanford a better team. Him getting meaningful game reps for three games before ND will make them a tougher opponent than if Chryst was under center. Period.

i work with a lot of Michigan, Ohio State and even an Alabama fan. They still don't give ND any credit for being a great team. For me it's been difficult to get out of the mindset that this team is going to come back to earth and get beat somewhere along the way or maybe even implode. This team has completely won me over now. I think they step on the field believing they are the better team and could care less who is going to play QB or that they are facing a Heisman front runner. ND is a breakout game away from Wimbush on achieving elite status in College football this year.

Costello finished 9/20 zero TD's and a pick. Also one carry for -3 yards.

I'm not concerned in the slightest. He's a minimal upgrade at best, modest downgrade at worst.

He's not a downgrade. Long term, he's the better player and fits the offense better.

At the end of the day, Stanford is just not very good.

Doesn't matter, he didn't play like the better player. That's what I'm getting at. People were freaking out about Costello >>>>> Chryst, and that was not on display today. Hasn't been on display all season. They both have been around the same level of subpar.

Who freaked out? Said he's the better player and they should still win handily......

Did I ever tell you guys that KJ was the best QB I ever saw live?

That absolute beat down he put on Blake Barnett was chicken soup for my bruised soul after Barnett de-committed.

Would've been Irish had BK not been born with his running QB fetish. Hard to look back and realize ND offered SoCal megastars, Matt Fink and Malik Henry then settled on Book.

After 1 whole game, he owns (all?) of the SEC single game passing records.

If I replace Swarbrick, Pirate and Lea will be your Co-HC's. This is my promise to you.
