Defensive end Andrew Trumbetti will be counted on to give Notre Dame as pass rush in 2016 and it will be defensive line coach Keith Gilmore’s job to get him ready. That relationship has improved in Gilmore’s second year at Notre Dame and this spring is big for the New Jersey native.
“Coach Gilmore is just great all around,” said Trumbetti. “He is a great guy on the field and great guy off the field. I feel like our relationship this offseason has really got a lot better. He’s helped me a lot by being able to talk about anything really. That’s what I like about our relationship right now.”
The 6-foot-3, 260-pounder is still a sophomore, but in a few short months, Trumbetti will be an upperclassman in his position room. It will be his job to mentor young guys like Daelin Hayes and Julian Okwara this summer, but the fact he will be one of the older guys hasn’t totally hit him yet.
“I still feel like I haven’t got to where I am recognized as an upperclassman yet,” explained Trumbetti. “I feel I will eventually. I feel like I have to prove myself and once I do, I will be recognized as that. For now, I just have to keep doing my job.
“I feel like I just got here yesterday. I feel like I was in Daelin’s shoes two weeks ago. It’s crazy that I am going to be a junior in college. I have two more years to play. It’s crazy.”
The Notre Dame defensive line is a deeper group than in 2015, but it’s now about developing that depth into playmakers this spring. Trumbetti feels his unit has had a good spring and the added depth with pay off in the fall.
“I feel the defensive line is looking really good right now,” Trumbetti stated. “We have a bunch of good players and we have lot more depth this year. Last year, a lot of players had to play a lot of downs, which took its toll at the end of the year. This year, its good a lot of us can play and have a good rotation.”
Trumbetti has registered two sacks in his first two season at Notre dame, but he is looking forward to setting and reaching his goals in 2016.
“I want to be the best,” said Trumbetti. “Right now, I want 10 sacks. I want to be an All-American. That’s really what I am shooting for. I just have to go out there and prove myself. This spring I have got better and I know I can do better. I am really shooting for the best, honestly. If I think I can do it, I can do it. It doesn’t matter if anyone else thinks it.
“There is just a lot of areas I need to improve on. I am just working on it all. The team needs me to be the best, so I am focusing on that right now.”
