Reading through the presser:

Smythe is pretty much back.

Jones is coming along, but is further behind than Smythe. Needs to build up reps.

Zaire "well ahead of schedule," taking reps in 7-on-7, will NOT play in bowl. Probably won't work scout team either.

Compared OSU to Bama in their DL depth, said they weren't celebrating that Washington is out. Used it as a reminder to keep guys focused on bowl prep rather than being dumb.

Kizer is working on getting the ball out quicker, also working on throwing on the run from the perimeter (aka, roll out away from Bosa all day).

Prosise will return to practice late next week.

Russell would need to appeal to NCAA to get another year. ND plans to submit an appeal.

Interesting...So KVR intends to appeal for a 5th year, which seems to me a good chance he will be back next year.

Wow, secondary could be pretty special next year if KVR is given another year.

Although KVR didn't necessarily have a great year, returning would help that portion of the D that could use help. Hope his appeal is successful.

So it sounds like KVR desires to return if possible. That's good to hear

Idk if I'd take those comments that far. I'd imagine they would appeal ASAP, that way he can use that info to decide if he can improve his stock by returning, based on what he hears from the NFL

Agree with everyone, returning KVR for another offseason and full season of football will be beneficial to both parties. He can prove whether he is truly amongst the best and we'll hopefully have a better corner than last year.

Man Weis left some talent for BK. That 2011 team was loaded.

He also left some gaping holes on the roster and a weak-minded culture. I won't place all of the roster problems on Weis but Weis and Willingham together set ND back a great deal.

Tj Jones, Michael floyd, eifert, Jonas grey, riddick, and cierra wood. I'd take those skill positions for the rest of eternity if I could.

I am not sure KVR intends on coming back, I think Kelly was asked if Russell could come back and Kelly elaborated on the process. On Notre Dame's end, they should get everything in place, so Russell has all the info he needs to make a decision.

Personally, i think he could use another year in college to fine tune a couple things, but I also think he will be more than fine if he comes out.

willingham's recruiting was essentially self imposed sanctions, very weak classes. Weis turned that around and started the process of which kelly benefited from, and obviously has taken the team to the next step.

Weis did not produce on the field in the last few seasons, but he did not leave the program in shambles. I would say willingham and back to davie were where the setbacks began, weis started to pull us out, Kelly finished it up and is carrying the torch obviously with another great class of recruits.

what are the success rates with these appeals to the ncaa, my memory holds that they don't get accepted very often.

didn't case keenum apply and get denied at houston in a similar situation?

How does KVR's situation compare to Ishaq's? Both lost a year due to academic suspension and IW was denied for this year. Apples to apples? or were there extenuating circumstances that differentiate KVR to IW?

I'd like to see KVR come back and learn to get his head around. Once he learns to look for the ball, he may be a force.

I was literally horrrified and frankly shocked at the amount of times this season he didn't turn his head in coverage...cant imagine what the nfl scouts will think.

he needs another year if he thinks he's going to be drafted in rounds 1 thru 3 IMO.

Weis' offense was pretty damn good. If only he recruited a couple more kids on defense.

Apples to oranges. Both were re-admitted by ND. Russell was cleared by NCAA to play while Williams was not.

Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly says defensive end Ishaq Williams has been ruled ineligible for the season by the NCAA, ending his college playing career.
Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly says defensive end Ishaq Williams has been ruled ineligible for the season by the NCAA, ending his college playing career.

Williams was dismissed from Notre Dame last fall after being investigated for possible academic dishonesty. He had sought a waiver from the NCAA allowing him to play. Kelly says Williams remains on scholarship.

Senior cornerback KeiVarae Russell also was dismissed from school along with Williams last season but has been cleared to play. Kelly said Thursday all he could say about why Russell was allowed to play while Williams wasn't was there were different circumstances.

If memory serves - Ishaq was thought to be below a 2.0 GPA needed to be eligible, maybe something with credits to date as a 5th year senior as well. I feel good for the kid being given a scholarship to complete his degree - way above and beyond what ND needed to do and a positive change from what would have happened even 10 years ago, IMO. It was his 5th year and no opportunity for a 6th given nothing medical.

KVR, being a year younger and by and large thought to have pretty good grades was a completely different set of circumstances. He still has five years to complete four - even if he had to sit two years to get grades up, he would have the opportunity for a fifth year.

I suspect KVR thinks pretty highly of himself and will go pro regardless of what any reports say. I agree that another year might give him potential to work into a first round pick where production puts you over the top. Don't see a lot of risk of him being below average at the combine - but I don't see much chance of him being top decile either.

FYI: single tickets in the ND allotment just opened up. Just picked up a single in Section 408! Stoked to ring in the New Year in Phoenix!

I thought KVR had ridiculous numbers coming out of high school and his box jump would correlate with great explosiveness for long jump/40 time. I thought KVRs shuttle was amongst the best in his class as well.

I think the combine would really help him but he's still recovering. He may need a full year to work on his combine scores and the bonus is he can give ND another year and get a year of grad school free.

In here just to say one thing...I would like to see Taylor Decker on his back at least 10 times on January 1st.

Any other ex-commits on OSU's team?
