He does a nice job of extending his hands instead of waiting for the ball.

"They have a young team and I think they're definitely on the rise. I was impressed with the team, I think they can still fine tune some things but they have some good, young talent. I was impressed with the quarterback, Jake Browning. He held his own and looks very solid. I like the offense and the scheme and like I said, they're definitely moving in the right direction."

"We broke down film and he showed me how they want to use me," McKinley said. "He said it takes a while to learn the offense but once you do and you're ready to play, there's plenty of playing time available. They have some young receivers but also have a few guys graduating so there's definitely opportunity there. I'm already as big as a lot of their receivers so it's just a matter of learning the system.
"I had a nice talk with Coach Petersen as well and he told me he really wants me to be a part of the program. He said he loves everything about me, not just football wise but how I'm committed in the classroom and how hard I work on my game. He said I could be very successful there and I'm definitely giving them a hard look."

Check Out Early Season Highlights of Scout 100 WR Javon McKinley

McKinley does a great job using his size to shield smaller defensive backs and runs very well after the catch. He battled a few injuries over the summer but when healthy, has very good speed to go along with the rest of his skill set.
He has a nice initial burst and can run away from a defense in the open field. He's very strong in jump ball situations, an advanced route runner and usually drags a couple of defenders for a few extra yards before doing down.
On the recruiting front, McKinley has already visited Washington and will check out Tennessee, Notre Dame, Oregon and UCLA later in the year.
McKinley hasn't been featured as much this season as he was last year, particularly during the Huskies incredible playoff run, but he's always good for a big play or two every game. In week two this season against Orange Lutheran, McKinley was targeted often and hauled in 10 catches for 211 yards and a touchdown. Here's a closer look at McKinley in action against the Lancers.

Another important thing about Javon's game over any other star receiver I've seen is his blocking ability and his willingness to do so.

Blocking, route running and hands. That's how you get on the field as a freshman.

Dude's gonna be an all timer.

Ranked as a 3 star, #103 WR in the country on ESPN. Do not want.

Is that for real? They are always so swing and miss with the occasional home run in their ranking system. I wish I understood their process.

Welcome to First 48: College Recruiting edition. California Wide Receiver Javon McKinley has recently been murdered in his ESPN recruiting ranking. First 48 investigates why.

Hmm that's odd. McKinley is regarded nationally as a borderline top100 player. The way ESPN dropped him it's almost like a competitor had some financial investment in him.... Wait a minute

LuckyLucci:
As of now the plan it to commit at the U.S. ARMY ALL AMERICAN GAME after taking OVs

Seriously, is that why? Hilarious if true. ESPN is a joke.

247's Comp has him as the #5 WR in CA, #19 Nat.

247 has him as the #2 in CA behind Tyler Vaughn and #15 Nat.

I have not met ONE person that follows the SoCal HS football scene that says he is anything less than #1 OVERALL. Above Costello, Betiku, Henry, Jones and everyone else.

He's gonna be the best WR in this class. I feel it in me bones.

What sets him apart from the others?

Let's play the comparison game. Who do you guys compare Javon to?

I see Texas Tech's Michael Crabtree.

Sue Cravens. I cant help it. Im sorry. I have a problem.
Honest answer Dez Bryant simply because of his body control. Doesn't rely on just speed to win matchups.

A poor mans Terrell Owens

I like it as well as Michael Floyd. He displays some stiffness in his hips and shoulders, so did both of those guys. Has good physical size and strength with good speed for that size. I'd say that Javon has less athleticism than those two but I think he has better foot quickness than say a young Floyd.

Javon looks a bit more comfortable after the catch than Floyd, too. Floyd always seemed to have a really awkward stride after the catch, almost like he was moving slightly side-to-side in an effort to turn on the jets.

If I had to think of a comparison, I'd probably go with Crabtree, like Beau. He's not the biggest guy, or the fastest guy... and yet on film, he simply looks like he's a step ahead of everyone in every facet. One of those guys that is just a general playmaker.

Lucky, I'm curious how you can tell someone has stiffness in his hips or shoulders when watching film? I'm not trying to sound like a prick I just wanna know what to look for.

For WR, I look at how they go into and come out of their breaks. Are they able to sink their hips with ease and then equally as easily explode or rise out of the cut. Usually you'll see a noticeable slow down in progression of the route if there is stiffness. Shoulders are fairly similar just with the upper body. For me its most noticeable when a player has to turn back for the football. You can see when, Floyd for example, would have to turn his entire upper body, sometimes entire body, to face the ball instead of just being able to turn his arms and/or shoulders around. There's numerous things that others probably look but thats where I start. FWIW, this is why I like watching WR's and CB's so much in combine settings. Its fairly easy to see who is stiff and who isn't without pads on. Don't take this as a dig on the kid as Floyd and Owens are/were studs and Javon will be.

Awesome man, I was always curious on that and how people break down Oline film especially at the high school level but you could probably right a book on that.
