I also thought it was a red flag how he got into shape for the NFL combine but couldn't get into shape for his senior year ND. That's going to make pro guys think you're only going to go all out in a contract season. Nix was the man, but there were a lot more red flags for him looking back on it than I realized.

You are a lot more "right on track" that most. Not that Nix was a bad guy, but he could never get out of his own way, and his compliance with what he needed to do for his "program" was ancillary at best.

As you stated his actions, however subtle, spoke louder than words, his or anyone else's!

Strange, I had just spoken to his gf as recently as last week and from the sound of it, it seemed like he was doing well and was slated to be the next man in after Wilfork. What I got was that his health was not an issue at all. Hopefully it'll all work out for him and he uses this as the motivation he needs to get it going.

I feel like this is the case for most ND players. Call them soft, entitled, whatever, but IMO it's because it takes more than athletic ability to get into ND in the first place, and a lot of the players aren't the "NFL or sell insurance in my hometown as a token to get clients" type of player the SEC recruits.

It's harder to be motivated to do something that destroys your body for money when you could do something much easier for more than enough money instead. If Lou was 100% committed to playing in the NFL and had no other goals, he would have stayed with a Florida school IMO.

* I have no idea what his motivation in life is, and he is still plenty young enough to forge out a career in the NFL if that is what he truly wants.

I don't think it's a matter of soft or entitled (though we do get some of those). Just that there's a big difference between being a college football player and a pro football player, and for several reasons you see that dichotomy more at Notre Dame than most places.
But if a player gives what he can to Notre Dame (as Nix certainly did), and Notre Dame holds up its end of the deal with a serious education (as it usually does), I can't get that worked up about what happens afterward, especially if - as in Nix' case, there's a solid rookie contract. Long run, I figure he'll be OK even if football ends earlier than expected.

Agree with this 100% ND recruits on average seem to be much better off then your average SEC recruit judging by the type of Catholic and Prep schools we recruit from. And then on top of that you are getting one of the best degrees in the country where you can make 100,000+ easy. Shit we heard that Max Redfield, a former 5 star safety, needed to focus MORE on football. There isn't that feeling of "football is my only way out" that exists at other football factories.

Ya, some players just are college players only. It's where they succeed and peak. Nix looks to be one of those players.

Nix's whole motivation to play football was borne from signing a rookie contract to buy a house for his family. Not that that is done its easy to see why the NFL is not working out for him

I'm not sure one in film, television and theatre will help him any unless the ND alumni network can help land him an analyst gig.

Hopefully things work out for him in his life. He overcame a lot. But his NFL career (or lack thereof) is wildly disappointing.

Man. I really wanted him to use his final year of eligibility. Really felt like he needed to refine his game before moving on. I'll be bummed if he doesn't make a name for himself in the NFL.
