Scout: visiting the 23rd or 27th. Staff told him he could be like Jaylon in formations, he likes the freedom he has seen Jaylon have. Michiah Quick and Tee Shepard have told him to visit ND.

If we picked him up it would go a long way into fixing my Fresno butthurtness.

When it comes to Fresno kid, getting them to verbal or even getting them to sign and report to campus isn't enough for me. I won't stop being suspicious until they receive their degree and exhaust their college eligibility.

"Fresno isn't some blackhole," Kelly said. "It has just been that everybody has been close. Everybody in Fresno has liked Notre Dame, I mean Tee Shepard he had a chance to go there, and Michiah Quick he was choosing between Notre Dame and Oklahoma, so I mean Notre Dame has been it, but we just haven't ended up there." - See more at: https://notredame.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1781423#sthash.Icx2MI11.dpuf

Kelly said that he plans to visit Notre Dame sometime in July, and he claims that this time he will actually make it to campus.

"The tickets aren't booked — I know it's the same thing [as last time] — but were just going to go on a visit this time where we don't have to wait on coach," Kelly said.
"Notre Dame made the cut because they are a school that I really want to look at, and I have heard a lot of good things about them. I just want to go out there and check them out. I have heard from Michiah and all of them that it's a school I should go see, so I want to do that," Kelly said.

"I could be that guy, I mean I'm going to go check them out, so we'll see how it is after I visit," Kelly said.

The Opening Day One Observations - One Foot Down

- With my first look at him in person yesterday, I'm pretty sure I can say with certainty that linebacker Caleb Kelly is not quite Jaylon Smith. That's no knock on Kelly. More of a nod to what an exceptional athlete Smith is.

Kelly is an extremely fluid athlete, though, and looks downright slim at 219 pounds. He is bigger and more physical player than Smith was at this age in my opinion. I'm excited to see what kind of things he can do in coverage today and tomorrow.

Okay, this may seem a bit off topic, but doesn't he look a bit like a black Steve Elmer in his profile pic?

I remember watching Jaylon in the IHSSA state finals and he looked pretty skinny.

I saw him his senior year and he was. I think they were listing him at 205, but he was probably in the 190's, (I remember thinking that at the time.)

But after he committed, that winter and spring before he reported in June to Notre Dame, he worked with that guy in Ft. Wayne with the well deserved reputation, and it was regularly quoted that he put on about 30lbs of muscle. Mostly in the legs.

His freshman year as I remember he was in the 220's, and still lacked a little with the upper body, (which was never a very strong suit for him, even through his freshman year at ND.)

Last year he made real strides with his upper body, which became noticeable. Then came Zack Hillsland's quote that when he was in South Africa, the kids wanted to check him out to see if his arms were real.

So I can really see the comparison made earlier between Kelly and Smith; Kelly looks more ripped as a senior, and has bigger arms, is taller and looks like he weighs more even though he's still streamlined. But the thing I have never seen in any high school player, was the ability to instantly accelerate, and change directions like Jaylon did against the Ohio Division V runner-up. I could see the fear and puzzlement in the eyes of that Whitmer quarterback. He had clearly never seen anything like it, and during that run Whitmer played against the best in Ohio and Michigan.

Yes Kelly is an incredibly fluid athlete for 6'4" tall, much in the way of Jaylon. But there is a bit at the top end that isn't there. But that is okay, it may never have been with any other, either!

I think Tee will always love and respect ND...too bad ND didn't work out for him. Nice to see him giving Kelly some good advice.

It wasn't a question of ND not working out for him. No Div 1A worked out for him coming out of HS.

Tee never passed the NCAA Clearinghouse House while in HS making him ineligible for a Div 1A scholarship - anywhere. He had to go the JUCO route to get around the Clearinghouse requirements.

All it really says is the days kept getting pushed back and then tickets got too expensive.

In reality this just isn't a recruitment we should really get vested in right now. Insanely uphill battle with folks around him.

Happens all the time - elite kid that gives ND all the lip service but visits keep getting pushed back and he ends up elsewhere.

It actually couldn't be more different. A lot of times a single parent just simply doesnt have an extra $700 laying around to buy plane tickets. It's a tough task to get a "five-star" LB to all these camps to actually help his game, but then also fly him across the country for unofficial visits.

Kelly has legitimate interest in Notre Dame and I would tend to say he isn't the typical "Fresno kid". I also would say there are no favorites at this point in time for him, so officials will be the key.

I'm not actually sure what you're saying couldn't be more different?

I didn't say anything about him being an ND type kid I commented on not getting vested for now. Which I'm not sure how you could even disagree with considering he's never been to campus but has set 2 dates. Lastly, I commented on his support group. Which at this time is either all UM or all OK. That doesn't bode well for ND.
