Gary told both ISD and Scout he will visit Notre Dame with his mother. Per ISD, she figures to be pretty influential on his decision and wants to see ND for herself. Academic support will play a role in his recruitment, and he is interested in how schools will help him develop strong study habits instead of just forcing him into mandatory study hours.

every recruit is a roll of the dice but people love to be right about "not" getting a(ny) (top) prospect.

Naysayers? Lol I didn't say I bet he doesn't come, just simply that I'll believe it when I see it. This kind of stuff happens all the time with every school. Kids do interviews and just say all the right things. Hopefully this pans out. ND does well with parents.

It's been noted, his mom is good friends with Brandon Wimbush's mother

I'd love to have a kid like this to clog and disrupt the middle.

But he'll fit in if he supposed to, if not he won't.

Hopes high, expectations low, where I'm concerned.

What is the deal with our DL recruiting this cycle? Are we only taking a couple? Are we just not in on very many?

Yea, first round draft pick potential here. Could play DE in a 3-4 or at best DT (3 tech) in a 4-3 in the NFL. Part of his "special" is you could move him all over and create mismatches. He's quick/fast enough for tackles but strong enough for OG's. He's a unique kid. Don have my hopes up but somebody will get a great prospect.

We were always supposed to "get a shot" and his mother has always been pro-ND.

In other words, it seemed pretty good very, very early because of his mother, but nothing since has really given much encouragement, and I'm not sure we've been on him as hard as other schools have been. Not that that is easy. Schools are putting in all they can to get him.

Our 2015 team will dictate whether some of these guys really step foot on campus. Start off hot, the defense is flying around and producing and the offense is dropping bombs and we'll finish really strong.

Start off weak, fail to close games out, lose a couple in the first 6 and we'll finish top 20 at best this cycle. What we put on the field is critically important. We're two years removed from a 12-1 season, last year we beat the best defense in the SEC in a bowl game. We must produce double digit wins and have some players make some "oohh snap" type plays.

If we've been primed any year since BK arrived, it's this one. Every year we say it but we are returning a ton of talent, let's see if it forces a player like Gary to follow through with these plans.

If the strategy was to slow play him... Have to say, I dig it. The #1 player in the country is going to get the full press from every school in the country. If we knew his mom was in our corner, it's not like constant contact would have necessarily been better than other flashy programs. But if we come in with a full court press when he is more serious about his recruiting process, with a class he can cornerstone, at a school his mother loves... Hell, it's not where you start, it's where you finish.

I'm guessing it's a huge long shot, but a shot nonetheless. One where we get our opportunity after the glitz and glam of a recruitment is starting to wear out.

I wouldn't take all of the recent news as progress for ND to be honest. He is one of the kids that simply doesnt really speak to the ND media a whole lot.

It wouldn't surprise me to see him visit, but ND has a long way to go to even be considered a serious contender.

I also wouldn't say his mother is in ND's corner just yet. I believe she wants him to check it out, because she does understand the academic opportunities at Notre Dame, but she can't be behind something she has never experienced as well.

I would take the recent news as progress, considering there was next to nothing on news involving him and us up until now. I'd say our chances drastically increase when/if he visits, especially with his mom. There is a concern I have with the comments he made though. He said that he wants a school that'll have a great academic support system and is willing to work with the player in the classroom. While I believe ND's player academic support is stellar, I am worried that the recent academic suspensions might cause concern for him and his mother.

Still a long shot, but with an impressive visit, I'd say we are definitely in position to contend for him. Winning this year would help too.

Why does my gut tell me he'll commit to Alabama?

It seems like that's the recent trend of high profile DL's looking for a school with good academics ending up signing with Sa(t)an. See Da'Shawn Hand and Khalid Kareem. (or maybe that's just DL that spurn scUM for Abalama).

Alabama.....loaded on the DL? Bullshit

They've taken 6 DTs the past two years including Daron Payne. They've got a handful of DT, including Kendall Jones, already committed this year. Both are Top 10 material.

Phil Steele likes UA's DLine according to his preseason breakdown.

... but Saban will make room at the inn for the right recruit no matter what the body count is.

I was just giving T Town a hard time. Alabama has been loaded on the DL since Saban arrived it feels like.

at least ND is in the conversation, but seems like in the end these guys leave us behind. Can Harry coach/recruit DL too?

Well it hasn't panned out in the draft exactly. Marcell Dareus was the only Alabama D-lineman taken in the first four rounds since 2011. Since then they've had:

2011: 1st round (Dareus), 7th rounder
2013: 2 5th rounders
2014: 1 5th rounder, 1 6th rounder.

Not exactly mind blowing.

May not translate well to the pro game but their defensive front seven has been tops in college football for nearly a decade.
