there's probably a lot more to this story that we'll never know for sure.

His HS is about 20 minutes or less north of South Bend. I kind of think as soon as ND offered he had his mind made up based on what his buddy told me. ND is the close, "cool" college team to play for. Probably has a lot of friends and classmates who are ND fans. I kind of doubt much thought went into the decision to come to ND, unfortunately.

NOT trying to belittle the kid at all but I don't think he would have played much here. With the competition he played against in HS (which was terrible) he should have had Clowney-esque highlights if he was going to be an impact player at a big time D1 program.

I wish him the best going forward and hopefully he does find the right fit. It was pretty cool to have a small town, local kid at ND. We have another shot with Malone-Hatcher next year which will hopefully work out a little better.

247 has a quote saying he wanted to be a bit closer to home. Don't think these possible destinations make sense as ND is about as close to home for him as he is gonna get. Just not a good fit for him personally. He had high praise for th entire ND staff, team, etc.

Yea, that quote makes no sense. You can't get closer to home for him than ND. There isn't a D1, D2 or D3 program closer. Maybe he meant closer to home in an environment sense? I dont know. Seems like a great kid tho so hopefully things work out for him.

Had nothing to do with the workload academically or depth chart. Sometimes things don't work out. However, I don't think it was a "Ragone" situation that caused the transfer from what I have been told.

Correct me if I'm wrong panda, but you were referring to Ragone's pot bust, right?

i was just writing what damefan had posted on rivals...NONE of that was my words but i would assume that is what he meant

Bummer. Looks like the two guys that were supposed to be good pass rushers never panned out for ND (Bo and Jhonny).

Not feeling so great about the pass rush any time soon.

will say that he had the scoop before anyone on media did

I don't doubt that he gets the scoop from people he knows.

But the Ragone stuff is crappy to put out there at the moment, IMO, but fits the mold of what I know about Damefan I guess.

How about a Derrell Hand? A Davonte Neal? How about a Boesky, a Jim Brown, a Miss Daisy, two Jethro's, a Leon Spinx, or the biggest Ella Fitzgerald ever?

Kills me when kids say it wasn't right fit. You didn't have to pick that school. Was not enough homework done during recruitment process? Lack of communication on NDs vs Johnny's expectations?

Do you expect them to say something like this:

I am not as smart or as good of a student and I was not able to keep up with the academic side of things at ND. While I would have loved to have graduated from ND...I simply was not good enough and now I need to go find an easier school.

Geez....Let these kids take their shot. I wish him nothing but the best.

It also may have been non-academic reasons. Maybe he doesn't like living in South Bend or decided he would prefer a larger campus. That's not unheard of.

I just hate to make assumptions in cases like these. Wish him well and we can move on.

Yeah, you never know. Jhonny Williams is from the Michiana area; maybe he just decided he wants to spread his wings a bit and go somewhere further from home for college.

You never know. I agree. I wish him well, and we move on.

"This was the best decision for me," Williams told Loy. "I love Notre Dame. I love the coaching staff. I love the players. I love every single thing about Notre Dame. This has nothing to do with the football program or anything with the staff. I can't say it enough how much I appreciate my time at Notre Dame. This was just a decision about family. My family has been going through some stuff and my mom is dealing with some stuff and I just want to be a little closer to home right now. My mind has been elsewhere and that's where my focus has been. Things are much better now, so I want to find a fresh start somewhere and put my focus and attention into it 100-percent."
Following the spring game, Kelly commented on Williams and his performance while at Notre Dame.

“He's a really good athlete,” Irish head coach Brian Kelly said after the Blue-Gold game on April 18. “Transitioning to Notre Dame has been difficult for him. He was underweight and playing at the defensive end position. He's worked so hard on putting on weight and making that transition, and carrying all that weight has been hard for him.

“He's got to work really hard in school and all those things, so it was nice to see him have some success today because he's a good kid that works hard and obviously a local guy, it's nice to see him have some success.”

I can't tell if there is any content to this or if he is trying to politely say nothing.

Similarly, I can't tell if there is any content to this quote other than that Williams came in light for a DE, or if I should be reading between the lines.

To me it sounds like his family "issues" have been keeping him from giving 100% at ND and instead of finishing what he started here, he'd rather do it somewhere else. No idea why that would be unless, he's in a big hole academically or the coaches have let him know that he has a long way to go. Personally I think this is about football. I think he realizes that this season will be a wasted season for him as he's not currently in the rotation so why not sit our a year, and get to a school where you can get some PT at. Essentially ND was the holding school while his family stuff got worked out.

Oh. I wasn't reading it that way but that totally makes sense.
