I just hope this means more highlights of Malik busting his ass to block for his running backs down the field.

Get ready for a JT Barrett type year MINUS the injury.

....but if Kizer can pull a Jones, I'm ok with MZ twisting his ankle a bit.

Be careful what you wish for. Sure as shi... Malik gets injured and we are back to a Tommy Rees situation.

Have no fear... Cardale Kizer to the rescue. Back to back championships won by an Ohio relief pitcher.

You would have to attach a 100 lb sandbag to Kizer's back, and another 20 ponder to his arm to simulate the full effect.

Remember Tommy Rees 1.0, before the mastery of the offense and 20 minute audibles? He looked about 10, and he was terrible--awful.

So coach Kelly said, "We will hand it to Robert Hughes. Robert, stop dancing and put your shoulder down. Then we will throw it to Michael Floyd. That is all."

That was enough to beat USC (in a terrible off year).

Everybody thought he was crazy, but he knew Malik. It was a matter of time in his opinion, and he was right.

We might not have liked the way he presented it, but he has to be sitting somewhere, with his feet kicked up, laughing his ass off reading this.

It's so true because his argument was basically this when Golson was coming back from suspension:
-Golson did some great things in 2012, but for his own sake he'd be better moving on to a new team. Check.
-Malik Zaire will beat out Golson. Sorta check.
-Golson is a good passer and a good QB but Malik Zaire can be just as good. We'll see.
-Malik Zaire is the leader/gamer/winner ND needs. Seems like it in small sample size.

Basically everything he said about Malik's positives and Golson not having "it" and that'd he eventually get beat out came true. It took a season of up-and-down play, but it happened.

And he was universally derided for being anti-Golson and too harsh on him. Funny.

I'll tell the real jojoblack about this thread. I wonder if he'll make an appearance back here to have his ring kissed or simply let me pass on his victory speech.

The Air Zaire era is 100% upon us.

A Rees situation if Malik was hurt would be great. To bad it wouldn't be anywhere near that good. We have no back up with experience of any kind and likely not near the level of football smarts.

I wasn't here for the JoJoBlack stuff but I guarantee I would've been casting stones with everyone else. I remember watching Golson's highlight tape a dozen or so times. He was the savior of the program and then he nearly did it his freshman year with a great defense.

Then everything else fell apart.

I really hope Malik rises to the occasion and kills it this year.

I'm excited about the prospect of our highest rushing totals in a long time.

i really believe Golson could have lit it up as a GS with all the lessons learnt by both him and the Offensive playcallers in 2014. But it was not to be.

Good luck to him though, I followed Hendrix's season with interest last year @ Miami and I will definitely be doing the same with EG this season

So quickly we forget that our first taste of Rees was as a snot nosed 18 year old true freshman. He looked 90 pounds soaking wet and terrified.

I would hardly say that we have "We have no back up with experience of any kind and likely not near the level of football smarts". Sure, Kizer has no where near the experience as Golson (how many teams can actually say that their backup does?), but he is light years away from where we were when BK got here. Kizer was a blue chip prospect and has been in the system for over two years.

Everybody keeps acting like having a backup with an undefeated season under his belt is an expectation for our depth. That's not realistic and most teams do not have that kind of QB depth. We are in good shape. Reeeelax.

Hypothetical question for the board: would you take a 1 year graduate transfer QB with playing experience if there was room?

With all due respect to Zaire, I hope we never have to rely on his arm to win us a game. This is where not having Golson is going to hurt us the most. VERY excited to see the offense under Zaire though - his intangibles are what have me most excited.

DEFENSE! DEFENSE! DEFENSE! and run the damn ball!!!

This.

Golson leaving isn't ideal, but we will still enter the season with more potential and talent at the QB position than 95% of college teams.

Golson left. I think it was the right decision for him. But the fact still remains Wimbush as a back up is a step back from Zaire or Golson as one. It's not about where we are compared to other teams. The comparison was to our own last players/team.

Kizer.... Kizer is the backup...

Last time I checked, the most important thing is how we compare to our competition.

The scary thing about this situation is definitely the back-up, but it is not because of his skills. It is because his first several games in the slate would be tough sledding and he probably will not get a chance for mop up duty. Very important Malik stays healthy, but he is a tough kid and I am not gonna worry myself to death. It is just very important that Kizer is able to get his feet wet as early as possible without the weight of ND nation on his shoulders.

At the time, I though Tommy played pretty well considering he was a relative no-name recruit with no arm strength. There are much, MUCH worse situations than Tommy 1.0 IMO.

He did sort of blow the game against Tulsa... but he was also sort of the only reason Tulsa didn't beat the breaks off of ND haha.

(Disregard this if you are referring to his VERY first appearance, the ill-fated flea-flicker. To this day, I will give BK credit, rather than deride him, for trying to loosen the freshman up with that playcall. It may have been stupid, but it was also ballsy and the purpose was clear. I can live with it. But it was still a bad INT.)

I asked this question in the Golson thread, but why can every other power program in the country plug inexperienced talent into their roster year after year and have them immediately produce except Notre Dame? Why, only at Notre Dame, is experience a prerequisite for production?
