Riddick's effectiveness was uncanny, and a part of 2012 that doesn't get nearly enough credit (and people around here give him a lot of credit). I'm not arguing that.

I guess what I'm worried about is that CJ is going to get lost in the shuffle after this cross-training experiment. Riddick is a good example of the hybrid working to perfection... but he's the only example in five seasons. He had 190 (!) carries in 2012, and 38 receptions... I just fear that Prosise won't be given a fair shake to be the weapon that he is.

My projection for this year... assuming they use him how they're purportedly cross-training him now... would be 40 carries for 300+ yards, 30 receptions 500+ yards for somewhere around 900-1000 yards of total offense. Now could he go all Todd Gurley or Zeke Elliot and magically transform into a 6' 220 destroyer of worlds? I guess. Could he turn out to be a GAIII style RB that isn't that effective save a couple specific plays? Probably more likely. What about him being a "power back" given his size?

I really don't have any clue what to think because I haven't seen him run the ball yet as a traditional running back. But at least on the surface, I think this move is predicated on wanting a guy that can truly be versatile out of the backfield unlike our current players + a confidence in the other slot receivers. Hope it works out.

Let's focus on slot for a second and ignore the Fuller/Brown/Robinson dynamic. Last year Prosise had more big drops than big plays because he doesn't have good hands. People don't usually improve their hands more than a marginal amount... people with a case of the dropsies are never going to become Odell Beckham.

...

Odell Beckham Jr's College Stats

Odell took a step-wise progression each year. If you look at Prosise's career stats you'll see a sizable leap from his first year. Now he's played a year at WR, let's see what he can do

2013: he had 7 receptions for 72 yards
2014: he 29 receptions for 516 yards and 10 rushes for 126 yards (most of that in a single game).
2015: if we only get a 20% increase in his production from a another year of familiarity, he'll account for 700+ yards of offense. I'm willing to guess that he gets at least 30 rushes this year. (Unless Dexter Williams is just off the chains) so my prediction would be that he gives us more than 1000 yds of production as a RS Junior.

Plus, a little ammo for the "ranking don't mean much" guys, Prosise was a 3 star on rivals 5.5

I believe Lax was solely referring to Odell's ball skills not his production.

I did a preliminary search on targets/catches in college but I couldn't find any data warehouses that kept that info. It was the best I could do.

Understood. That's why I gave you reps after I read your later reply on Prosise's projected production.

He's definitely more like Gurley/Zeke-lite than he is GAIII. He's already stellar at running in between the tackles, which GAIII could never do at an average level. It'll be interesting to see if his new-found RB skills translate in live-game atmosphere.

CJ Prosise. Gurley's physicality, Zeke's crop-top. All while being stellar between the tackles.

Because Bk made a comment about how good he was running between the tackles in practice and now its fact.

Fact Gary Gray was an all american corner at Notre Dame

Ps no offense to Gray. I always liked him as a player.

Re: lax on improving ball skills.

IMO there are natural "catchers" and then there those who improve on receiving.

While your receiving skills can be improved but never to the point of a catcher.

I remember going with my HS team to the scUM summer camp (gross I know). Braylon Edwards and Jason Avant were at scUM at this time. I remember there wr coaching taking about how Braylon rarely did ball drills outside practice because it just came natural while Avant got up early every day and stayed after every practice using the juggs machine.

Both have had 8 year careers and similar #'s in their careers (331 rec for 3,999 and 359 for 5,552).

I think Prosise could end up being an Adrian Peterson clone.

In all reality though, he does remind me of Demarco Murray in his build. With that being said, I wouldn't put too much faith in him contributing a huge amount out of the backfield. Can't wait to see him in the Spring Game though, and be able to come to the conclusion if he is an All-American or not.

he's already my prime pre spring game Spring Game MVP candidate. You know Justin Brent gonna be in the mix too when he's beating walk on Cb's to jump balls in the 2nd half

Apparently, he's been abusing some of our CB's in practice when he's focused. It sounds like he's making some eye popping plays followed by the then frustrating ones.

The success of their pro careers isn't really relevant. Some players blossom in the pros and some had their peak in college. What's relevant is who blossoms in college over those that peaked in HS. I'm interested in how they do in the NCAA that's caliber of play we follow.

As freshman Edwards caught 3 passes to Avant's 2. Edwards was a 1000 yd receiver as a So, Jr., and Sen. Avant only hit 1000 his Sr. year.

Edwards caught 252 passes, 3541 yds, 14.1 YPC, 39 TDs

Avant caught 169 passes, 2247 yds, 13.3 YPC, 13 TDs

Seems in college there was a definite go to guy. Edwards caught 3 times the TD passes avant did.

After his Fr year Edwards had double digit TD passes every year. The most Avant had in a year was 8.

They both had good careers and their mutual success was in part due to their mutual threat and DCs having to make coverage choices and getting burned.

Edwards was an All-American and selected 3rd Overall in the draft. Avant was 4th round, 109th. Looks like all that pratice paid off for him AND he raised his game at the next level.

Super-size me? The most dramatic spring practice ascender, running back/wide receiver C.J. Prosise, has continued to impress through the early summer workouts — just as a larger version of himself.

“He’s 230 now,” Kelly said of the 6-foot-1 senior who was pushing 220 pounds in the spring. “We’re going to see over the next four weeks whether that’s the right weight for him. We think the ideal weight might be 225. We’ll see how the numbers play out for us, but 230 and over 6-feet — that’s a big back with great speed.

“There’s not many times when you’re playing this game and against really top-notch players that (the word) ‘wow’ comes out, but I think there were a couple of times where you say, ‘wow, that’s pretty good.’ ”

I sure hope they continue to use him as a WR in addition to his RB duties.

I mean hehe, lol. Are you kidding me? 230? That would just be unfair. My expectations are starting to get ridiculous at this point. Between Fuller, Folston, and Prosise, choose your weopon. Can't wait for Texas!
