Nissan Rogue: Unless Nissan has replaced their CRAP CVT tranny, stay away from it or any Nissan product that has a CVT. They ALL go out and then you will send the guy at Aamco's kid to ND for a semester

.

How's the cvt on the new(er) Subaru and Honda?

I am biased, since I bought one last year, but THIS is what you want:

Thanks NDC. I've been a Ford guy most of life, but have been entertaining a change to GM. Trying to figure out next steps for late this year or early next. Toss up right now between leasing an Jag F-Type or buying a new or newer truck. I know, huge difference.. lol. I don't really need anything right now but after I get done on a restoral this year, I know I'll likely pull the trigger on something.

I really like what I'm hearing about the 2017 Raptor, so may wait till fall next year. Mean looking truck, just think I'll want a quad cab. Any words of advise on the Raptor series? Rumor has it that the 2017 will have an Eco Boost and get mid 20s gas mileage.

Been in the business a long time and that is without question the most eclectic final 2 I've ever heard of! I love the F-Types. Maybe the most perfectly designed car on the road. Drop dead gorgeous.

Now to the Raptor... If I had to own only one vehicle in the world for the rest of my life, it would be a Raptor. I've been in one at Glamis doing 80mph through the whoops and it's like a couch. It is to trucks what a La Ferrari is to cars. You can bet the new one with the 3.5 Eco Boost is going to be a huge step forward... especially if they turn the boost up on the turbos. Ford's betting big on the 3.5TT, they are putting it in the new GT. The new Raptor will be ready by the end of the year. It will come in a extended cab first followed by the Crew for you!

If you are a Ford guy (me too), get the Raptor and then build your choice of 5.0 Mustang for your fun car. I am going to build a '66 Convert with either a 347fi Stroker or a 3.5TT crate engine next winter. The Jag is awesome, a '66 Mustang with a modern drivetrain and brakes is untouchable for us Ford guys.

After all that... Do NOT get a boring 1/2 ton pick-up!

Ahhhh dude. Music to my ears (raptor quad). Yes, very eclectic final 2. Can't stop staring at the F-type site. Won't let myself go test drive one cause I know I wouldn't be able to stop myself.

I restore something every 4-5 years. Completed a older jeep, now working on 91 F150 lariat long bed 4x4 on 35s. daily driver is a 2012 sahara unlimited which I absolutely love in the summer. I told myself if I finished the F150 this year, I'd let myself splurge on something, hence the raptor or f-type thoughts. my next restoral in a couple years will be either a mid/late 60s stang, or 68 or 69 convertible Camaro. also love the machs.

wish I had the know how to put a new-tech drive train on something lol. I know just enough to be dangerous, and have some handy friends.

Word. I'm leasing as 2014 Mazda CX-5 for 3 years and so far absolutely love the car. So I guess I really don't know how long it will last. But if others were to lease I would highly recommend the CX-5

I drive a 2008 CX-7. Love the looks, but will not buy another Mazda. I've had too many things go wrong.

Damn sorry to hear that. I love the look and the feel of how the CX-5 drives. So it seems safe to say lease a Mazda, but don't buy.

An exercise in my most important not obvious features/requirements for purchasing a car :

1) Gas tank fueling on left side so I can pull up to the right of islands. (all vehicles/both cars!)

2) Ease of connecting -disconnecting car seats.

3) Control of front passenger air bag.

4) Repair cost/ parts availability.

5) Dent and ding resistance of body style.

6) Leg room.

7) Passenger seats for vehicle size.

8) Storage.

9) Actual fuel efficiency based upon type of driving expected.

10) Ease of keeping clean.

For example : My Subaru was heads and shoulders performance above any vehicle I recently owned, but it scratched and dented very easily; was a pain in the a$$ to keep clean; had the gas port on the right side(!); and the parts price was high, but availability was laboriously slow. I had a Mercedes that was nothing compared to the parts delay I experienced with my Subaru.

Me I want a vehicle I can put my kid in and do what we have to do, and then go, occasionally. I want it to clean up easily and not cost me a fortune in hidden upkeep. I am very comfortable with my purchase.

Also, I will stack my AWD mileage with anyone's. One of my daughter-in-law's has an Acadia, and mine is slightly less than twice as good!

I figured you were a Jeep guy with that username. My buddy put a 5.7 Hemi in his '97 TJ and King's all the way around. That think hustles. If I were doing a Jeep swap, I'd put the 5.7 Hemi in a YJ. I love the dash in the YJ. The TJ's went to automobile for me. and the dash cuts out all the legroom for guys my size.

The one thing that could make me buy tomorrow is this:

Jeep-Wrangler-Mopar-Recon-01.jpg

IF the diesel option performs well. A set of Fox or Kings at the corners and 35's. Yes sir.

But the Raptor makes room for a quad or dirt bikes without having to hook up a trailer...

This is quite common with Mazda... which is Japanese for Volkswagon. Some people have the best or luck: Me - '01 MPV... only added gas over 3 years / 60k. OR the worst of luck ME: '02 Millenia Supercharged which I couldn't fix or sell fast enough.

Depending who you talk to, you can get any type of response when it comes to Mazda

I am in the auto industry. After you figure out what you want from sites like Cars.com, and Edmunds. Buy at the end of the month as most stores have stair step programs so hitting sales objectives are important for volume stores. I hate TrueCar but it will tell you which new car dealers are willing to sell you a new car at the absolute lowest price. Also, try to sell your car on your own as you will keep an extra 2K in your pocket. Be confident, informed, and firm in your meeting at the dealership and it will be alright. Good luck!!

I pondered the diesel when I first heard the rumor, but I thought about it, and I'm quite happy with the power and fuel economy in the 2012. Being it will likely become a summer driver only for the most part after I pick up something new, think I'm just going to hill-billy it up a little like my 93. Totally went through the YJ. It has new just about everything new (bumpers, tops, seats, console, fender flares, hinges, doors, winch, etc.), except for the in-line 6. might have a stroker kit put on in a year or two, but not sure. I know most people don't like the square headlights, but the YJs are definitely my choice of the pre-JK. Hard to find a CJ in decent condition these days, and prefer the YJ wheel base. The TJ as you said, got a little too frilly. Also, way too much computer crap on the TJ. The YJ is plain jane enough under the hood that I can do most of the work.

Solid thinking. I am going to add a YJ to the fleet... Arizona is Jeep country. They outnumber Camry's and Accords on the road. There are unlimited miles of federal lands to drive on and you can get out in the middle of nowhere with them. Heaven. I like having older toys and an appliance everyday car. Right now it's a Prius and a '02 Mercedes CLK Cab. The S.O. has her eyes dead set on a new Z06. I could see that happening. 650/650 motivates me in more ways than one.... not that she'd ever let me drive it. lol

Hey Steelhead... what's the update on the sled? You pull the trigger yet?

Not yet, just kicking tires (online). Probably won't go in to look in person/buy until we get our tax return. The more I look at interest rates/monthly payments, I want to have a decent down payment ready.

After MUCH research and deliberation, I came to the realization a new car is only a small amount more than a used one in what we have been looking at, and we're going with a 2015 Honda CRV EX. I really wanted AWD, and that model has all the bells and whistles inside along with 17" alloy wheels.

What dealer are you buying it from?

Doesn't surprise me. I remember back in the late 70's a friend knowledgeable in dealerships said they typically made an 18% profit.

Word good choice. I would go with the Mazda CX-5, but the Honda CRV would be second. Enjoy the new ride!

Call a dealer 100 miles away with the exact specs and they likely will offer below what you local dealers are doing with delivery to your driveway. Fastest way to get the locals in that 10% -15% off MSRP that some are talking about here.

Plan on picking up the new ride on Saturday and finalizing everything. BEFORE then, I opened Pandora's box online and began to unearth some concerning information about CVT's. I know they can produce some weird noises and slight vibrations you don't normally feel in a standard automatic transmission, but there seems to be a lot of people out there who feel CVT's are pieces of crap destined to fail around 50,000 miles, regardless of manufacturer. Most of the articles are dated back in the late 00's, but it still is making my skin crawl.

Anybody have experience with a CVT? How many miles before issues (if any)?

I don't know about failing at 50K, regardless of make, but I would agree CVTs are POSes. But that has to do more with quality of ride than anything else.

My vision was blurry when I read the thread title. Thought it said "car burning questions." Thought maybe you were out looting.

So I am looking replacing my SUV. I was hopeful the Santa Fe was going to give me a good third row option but they have shrunken those down to a glorified station wagon and the bigger model Veracruz was discontinued.

Any suggestions for a mid size, mid level SUV? I don't want a monster but something with a realistic third row.

Went through this last fall. Nobody makes a good midsize anymore. The Toyota Highlander is pretty sweet, but its WAAAY overpriced. Most manufacturers seem to be downsizing their mid size SUV's (glorified station wagons) and coming out with a larger premium model.

Got my wife a Ford Escape. Too small, but has nice features like a full length moonroof, heated seats, backup camera, etc. Cheap too.

My wife just got a kia optima, and since then I have noticed a few more of the Kia models and the Kia Sorento looks like a decent mid size suv option. I have never been in one or driven one, but would be interested to hear what anyone who has thinks about it?
