You are right, I forgot about Waller. lol

Hmm....wonder where you two were when he was an ND commit. Virtually everyone on this site were arguing how overrated Towne and Rosen were, and that Barnett was a surefire 5 star QB and possibly the best in the country. Not only that, but he was essentially the perfect fit for NDs offense - elite size, athleticism and arm strength. Now he sucks....

By ND commit, you are referring to Barnett and not Waller correct?

Let's not get it twisted- Barnett could have been stellar in this offense. Wimbush, however, has the potential to go down as one of the best "consolation" prizes ever. Hyperbole? Maybe. Time will tell, but I'm excited to find out.

Is it possible Waller is getting a bump because he is going to play at Oregon and the recruiting services know he will undoubtedly get a chance to put up huge numbers? In other words, they want to be able to say "we were right about this kid"

Self-fulfilling prophecy of sorts.

Great article. Very interesting glimpse into the insane recruiting world for two stars.

And good for Jordan Fox - kid took the SATs five times to get the score needed to get into Stanford. I'll be rooting for a kid like that to succeed, even if going to a rival school on the field.

Just read that on my phone. That's definitely a two beer blog. Lax, do you have two more stories for us? I've got 4 more Sculpin IPA's if so.

Great read, thanks!

"Should I text Blake [Barnett] and see why he decommitted?" Brandon asks. He's friends with Barnett, the quarterback who chose Alabama after committing to ND, through the summer showcase circuit. "I heard [the coach] hung up on him when he called."

is this true? This is the first I have heard of this

It's the accepted story. Barnett called up Kelly to let him know he wanted to take visits/decommit and Kelly just hung up the phone because he's learned over the years now that these kinds of kids he's either 1) not keeping 2) won't work out at ND. He didn't see the point in wasting any more time on Blake.

I'd believe it. Probably could have been a little nicer about it I guess, it's not like Barnett ditched us in January or on signing day, but I get what LAX is saying. Kids like Barnett are unlikely to stick once they're floundering, and if they do they probably don't work out because they're not all in.

I hate to hear this. I understand that Coach probably knew exactly where this was going, I understand that a lot of time and resources were spent in BB's pursuit, I know that you get emotionally invested in this process or any process that requires so much effort, but there are some lines that should not be crossed. Being anything but polite and direct or at least honest about the disappointment but still respectful is beneath the coach of a prestigious institution in particular Notre Dame. These stories don't go away quickly, i.e. "purple face". There are more appropriate ways to show your displeasure or the fact that you are finished with a prospect. $ 0.02.

With all due respect, it clearly didn't hurt our chances with Wimbush.

No inside info but that was right before he went to visit oregon and ultimately did not choose them.

Maybe if the door was open at ND, he would have decided it actually was a better place for him?

Extremely happy with Wimbush though!

Well then it was obviously the right way to handle that situation...nevermind.

I wasn't commenting on whether it was the right or wrong this to due. Just to the point of it not going away quickly. Obviously, our very coveted and bright QB prospect was aware of it and didn't mind.

I understand what your saying Lucky, I guess my point is other than it just not being your best self, once you put that out there it takes on a life of its own. Purple face did not bother me one iota but it was twisted and used and had an impact in how Coach was perceived. This did not have any effect on the Wimbush recruitment but could it have impacted Minkah or Mekhi(sp?) probably not, but maybe a little? Who knows?

My point is not to even argue that it is right or wrong based on any recruiting outcome, but more in the fact that you are the head face of a school that will go to extreme lengths (frequently to its own detriment) to make sure kids are learning the lessons that will lead to thoughtful mature adults. It is a huge responsibility and I know Coach is human, just saying that if that is how it went, I would think that this is one Coach might like to have back at some point down the line. Maybe when he is old and recounting the glory days. Maybe.

The Purple Face stuff is SOOOO over blown.

Every coach on every staff gets the purple face. It's EASY to respond to any coach that is trying to use that against Kelly. I'd bet my 401k that it is brought up more on this board alone than every instance in recruiting by other staffs.

I lived through Indiana University basketball recruiting in the 80's and those trying to recruit against the King of Purple Faces, Coach Knight. Other coaches did NOT walk into a recruits house and say, "You want to play for him? He gets all purple faced on national tv!" I mean, how could Gene Keady or Digger do that when they had bad cases of the purple face too?

Brian Kelly I think is too laid back sometimes. I mean it's football for God's sake. Show some passion and anger, it's what the game is about. Thankfully, the younger generation's players aren't the soft ones, it's the fans that have the thin skin.

Yeah, honestly the kids don't seem to care. I mean, Kelly has been called "purple face" for years, and yet plenty of excellent student athletes still come to ND. It's the fans of other programs that seem to whine about it more than anything. I've seen other team boards go on about "Why would any kid want to play for purple face?" Usually that comes out after they lose on a recruit.

There certainly are plenty of coaches that get angry on the sidelines in college football though, and frankly I see no problem with it. Every player is different, but when I played in high school I typically did better after a coach lit into me a few times. I'd dog it in practice quite a bit, tbh, and sometimes a fiery lecture was what I needed.

Yeah, I agree, but "purple face" really wasn't what we were talking about. I used it as an example, maybe poorly. Point is I could not care less about purple face, but I don't like the head coach of Notre Dame hanging up on a kid, who calls him to tell him directly, man to man, that he is considering other schools or taking visits. If a coach did that to your son would you be talking about thick skin?

I agree with some others that the purple face thing was not the best example. However, other than that I think Redbar is spot on. The head coach is a leader of young men and the face of the program, getting mad on the sidelines is fine, acting with the immaturity of a high school student is not. High school students are expected to make at times irrational and poor decisions and behave immaturely where as an adult in a leadership position is expected to set disappointment aside and behave in a respectful and mature manner. BK should have calmly expressed disappointment and then wished Blake well. Nothing to be gained by hanging up on a kid like a scorned prom date.
