Kinnel Turns Focus to Recruiting

With his senior football season officially over, Huber Heights (Ohio) Wayne safety Tyree Kinnel will now turn his focus on where his football future will be.

A long time commit to Michigan, Kinnel has watched from the sides as other members of the Wolverines 2015 recruiting class have other made changes or stayed the course. Now it’s Kinnel’s turn to look at making some hard decisions.

Monday night, a tweet by Irish pledge Shaun Crawford had Kinnel visiting the Irish this weekend for an official visit. Is that the case?

“Coach (Mike) Elston from Notre Dame is coming on Wednesday,” said Kinnel. “It is not 100-percent sure that I’m going on an official visit this weekend. Most likely I’m going and we’ll see how the visit goes with my family when Coach Elston comes to the house and confirm it then.

“I’ve not said anything about going this weekend because I’m not 100-percent sure. That is why I’ve not said or posted anything about the visit.”

With a pending visit possibly coming, Kinnel has stayed in contact with the Wolverines.

“I did talk with Michigan today,” he said. “They are still looking and I’m not sure they are in a big rush to get a coach yet. I know they are out there looking because I know they want to get the right guy. Today I was told that after Christmas they will have their new coach, no later than that.”

While his commitment to former Wolverines head coach Brady Hoke was strong, Kinnel had to think hard about taking other visits. Notre Dame could be one of five visits taken before all is done.

“I have been hesitant to visit other schools,” he said. “But I’ll probably take other visits along with Notre Dame this weekend. So it’s a tough situation and I’m just trying to take my time.

“As far as Notre Dame is concerned, they have been on me pretty hard. I’ve been taking it in and trying to hear from everybody. Kentucky is still after me and I’m still in contact with Michigan State as Coach (Harlon) Barnett was in school last week. So I’m just taking my time as I know I’ve got a couple of months.

“Next week is a dead period so I’m just seeing what is going to be good for me. There is a more than likely chance I’ll visit Michigan State as well and a chance of visiting Kentucky and West Virginia as well.

“I talked with Coach (Derrick) Ansley from Kentucky and Coach (Shannon) Dawson from West Virginia last week.”

So Tyree also told Loy and II that he hasn't set the visit to ND as of this point. He did say that we are coming after him hard and trying to secure the visit but he hasn't decided if he'll make it yet. With that said Steve Hare of II and TJ both said they think its because he's playing things close to the vest since he's committed to Michigan and they think he makes it.

Scout: Visit went very good. Understands the difference between ND and other schools, didn't expect it to be as much as it was but he liked it. Scheduled to visit MSU Jan. 16th and maybe UWV after that but he doesn't want to push the decision too far out.

My takeaway would be ND did everything they needed to do but a good hire at Michigan would probably keep him. He seemed very content with his decision and now is trying to be thorough and make the right decision again.
