Then maybe he should change his plan. Realistically, where would he go? 3rd round?

Sent from my Samsung via Tapatalk

Maybe I shouldn't have said for sure he's gone. It was his plan from day 1 but he might reconsider due to health issues he has had. I know I'm a newbie here, not claiming to be an insider by any means.

Thanks. What exactly was "his plan"? Is he in position to graduate?

Again, this is second hand info from a former asst of his. It seems like his plan was to be a 3 and done guy. That might have changed though.

With him being an EE, he'd also potentially be in position to graduate after 3 years with summer sessions and all factored in, so I'd totally get that being his plan... plus having to contend with injuries. He's currently playing at about a 3rd-5th round level though so I wonder if that will give him pause.

That's kind of my take. I was told this info at the start of the year so his injuries could certainly have an impact.

Didn't he struggle w/ a high ankle sprain last season? Doesn't mean he won't go but he must really be desperate for a payday if he insists on entering after this season.

If he leaves I'll wish him the best. That said, if he leaves he'll be a 'what could have been' type player. Injuries have really affected his career so far.

It's a personal decision for him to work through, hope he stays around.

So another Troy Niklas?

this 2015 NFL Draft class is so weak I couldn't say I blame him.

can/will/should go in a much higher round than in a class with the "regular" amount of talent.

p.s. maybe this is why Kelly let him be captain for USC game??? (translation: he knew would be his last regular season game)

One of the reasons why I don't think his draft grade or position will be nearly what some think it might be. Very very quality player but he's missed a lot of games in 3 years.

He has been a captain all season.

A huge contributor to this teams performance, IMO. We've had a lot of this in the last two years. We haven't gotten nearly the production we should have out of a lot of the talent thats left recently. Add Tuitt and Nix to that list. I love both guys but 2013 was insanely unproductive for what they're capable of.

I'm all for leaving early and getting the money when you can BUT he needs to look at Will Sutton and get an idea what someone with his size can expect and then factor in Will Sutton was the 2x PAC-12 DPOY. Sutton's production only got him to the 3rd round.

I don't think he makes it into the 4th round unless he has some freakish combine workouts. Even then, he's gonna be a small, 6-1, 285 DL with freakish combine results.

Get the paper Sheldon, it's most likely worth more than YOUR NFL career.

He needs to stay. With a really good year and a few more pounds added to his weight, he enters the NFL as a reasonably accomplished 3-tech DT.

I meant from the injuries he's had, we've only had short windows of what he can do. If he stayed healthy for a year, I think we would have been in for a treat. If he leaves now, we'll only have those short memories and hope for a better pro career.

I don't know how the pros look at players with a steady track record of injuries. I'd have a hard time investing heavily in a player that hasn't shown the ability to stay on the field. I could see someone taking a flyer if they have an extra pick or two though, or have a deep DL squad where his reps are limited until he gets stronger and more durable.

I think thats a solid comparison, with like you stated, substantially less production.

so if in fact Sheldon can not only graduate, but leave early, that tells me this:

try to convince recruits NOT to EE...we lose them right when they are about to start playing their best.

Or we don't get them at all. Glass is half full in the instance of SD.

perhaps but I think a lot of times WE do the EE thing more because WE WANT to (due to scholly count, get em acclimated soon as possible etc) and not so much because we MUST (to get the recruit to come to ND over another school)

Sampson has stated for a while he would be shocked if Day left early. Same with Stanley

Huge! ... unless it's a red herring like Niklas returning.

This one seemed pretty obvious but it can't be overstated how big of a deal this is for next year. Our Dline next year could get back to being a strength. The depth starts to look pretty good next year, assuming we get development from the freshman and sophomores.

This would be very welcome indeed. It was rough going from rooting for teams to run the ball on 1st and 10 early in the year (and pretty much every year under BK) to rooting for them to pass it by the end of the year. We just couldn't stop any run game.

I couldn't agree more! This is great news for our Defensive front next year. I really hope we can really build on our depth and our defensive line becomes a strength. Having Day come back for another year will only help.
