I thought even before he committed to Michigan he was looking for an Irish offer...

Don't recall reading anything to that effect. Can anyone else confirm? Regardless, there's a big difference between having one's heart set on ND, and "looking for an ND offer". There are plenty of recruits who tell reporters they'd like to get one, if only for trophy value.

But if Kirkland's heart is truly at ND, then he certainly becomes a much more sympathetic figure (at least imo).

Posted above, if his heart were at ND he would've worked out for an offer. Like you said wanting a ND offer and it being your dream (trumbetti) are two very different things. This wouldn't be happening if UM didn't absolutely suck.

Stay in the top 10 year in and year out and you don't have to rely on kids that have their heart set on ND or have always dreamt about playing for ND. A few recent names come to mind that didn't get offers and desparately wanted one.

Those kids remain important, even when ND is winning consistently. We'd likely have more than 1 loss at this point were it not for Joe Schmidt. If you're only bringing in highly rated mercenaries, your team will eventually fall apart like Meyer's did at UF.

From what I've heard from friends with first hand knowledge, we missed on Kirkland if the variables were lined up. Time will tell but you can't complain with what's in the boat.

Yea, The guys at II have been pretty adamant that the staff really likes the LB's we got and in this specific situation Coney that much more.

It's obviously the staff passed as an offer was never extended. My point is that some pretty good football minds think ND missed by not getting him. One of them lives in Barajas' hometown and says without a doubt, Kirkland is the most physically ready player at the college level. Barajas and Bilal need weight. Once again, I'm not complaining about the haul that's in the boat. I'll just be interested in how the 4 LB's progress over the next 3-5 years.
