I love BVG, but the man has a losing record as a head coach. I would not feel confident in hiring him. He hasn't demonstrated in his career that he is ready to run a program.

I also don't think it'd be a wise move for Brian Kelly to go to the NFL. Kelly's strengths are not Xs and Os. He's an elite program manager and talent developer, but the NFL is dominated by strategists. Brian Kelly is not a wizard.

Swarbrick should be paying them both NFL money though, and continue to be the reformer that he has been to make Kelly's job easier.

Money.

Some guys aren't meant to be head coaches. Some are meant to be a coordinator. There are plenty of guys who've failed at being a HC but are terrific coordinators. Charlie Weis and Dick Lebeau come to mind immediately.

As for the strategist quote, I also agree. Weis is another example as he's the opposite of BK in that he's not a developer but a strategist offensively. Weis belongs in the NFL as an OC.

Interesting note....not sure where to put this, so my apologies for posting it in this thread; not sure if anyone has friends or knows someone that can help confirm this or has read/heard any reports that can verify this....and it's not good news for ND....I have a friend who is very close friends with a woman who works in the administration side of the 49er's front office....To no one's surprise, my friend told me that Harbaugh is considered to be pretty much gone after the season; that the rift between Harbaugh and the organization goes from veteran players all the way into front office....who cares, right? Well, ND fans should. Apparently, the 49er's are putting out "feeler's" for BK's interest in leaving ND and coming to the pro's....From what I was told, is that the front office and veteran players like his in-game intensity, but that he keeps a laid-back demeanor off the field, has a proven winning record as a coach, and that they are afraid that if they don't put out the "feeler's first, they may lose him to another team in the NFL....So take this as a grain of salt....but apparently the "feeler's" are out there on BK and the 49er's are supposedly quietly doing this...also, for what it's worth, it was noted by my friend that because San Fran is a very liberal (politically, speaking) city, they wanted a coach that is very liberal....I personally have no clue what BK's political stance is, but I vaguely remember reading a few years ago that his wife used to be involved in politically liberal causes during his Cincy days....don't quote me on that tho.....Hope someone on here can help dis-spell this or find out more to confirm it....??? Again, apologies for posting this here, just not sure where to post it...Havent been on here in years and after I heard this news, I remembered this forum and thought maybe one of you here "might be in the know" and could clear this up or if this type oif stuff happens all the time and is nothing to be worried about or what.....

Oh, of course we do. We're almost through 1 existential crisis, let's create a new one! I mean, it's not like we have a young, but talented 5-0 football team that will likely be undefeated when they take on an also likely undefeated defending national champion in 2 weeks!

Screw football, let's all piss down our legs, instead!

IMO, doesn't matter. Teams will always be interested in BK. It's up to him if he wants to stay at ND or not.

Can we just end this class with:

Soso, Aliz'e, Wimbush, Gustin, Buncom IV, Brossette, Kirkland Jr or Bilal and one more Safety (Marvell Tell or Ykili Ross)?

Bonus points for one additional DE?

Yeah, that'd be swell. Would definitely like to get another body on the line. Gustin would be one. But the more the merrier.

So if my memory is functioning correctly, we have room for:

1 QB
1-2 RB
1 TE
1 WR
1 LB
1 S
1 CB/S hybrid or taller CB
2 DE

If we find players for all of those, we are sitting at 27 schollies.

I believe we have room for 28 players ('15 signees and 5Ys) with that number likely to grow to 30-31 or so with possible early NFL departures (KVR) and medical (Baratti). I don't like to speculate on transfers, but we'll probably have one of those as well.

Looking at the 5Y list, I see seven guys (six starters if you include Farley) who are very likely to come back: Golson, Carlisle, Martin, Hegarty, Hanratty, Schmidt and Farley, and a few others that ND would normally take but probably won't due to a numbers crunch. I know there were some differing opinions before the season started on some of these guys being asked back, but I don't think BK turns away returning starters or guys that have started like Hanratty and Farley. Also, the 2016 class will be extremely small (as of now less than 10) unless we open up some spots with 5Y players in 2015. We probably couldn't have planned a worse year to have a small class given the success we're all predicting in 2015.

So, if we assume the available number grows to 31, and we bring back seven 5Y players, that leaves us with 24 spots (17 commits + 7 TBD) for 2015. Given our target list and recruiting momentum right now (despite the academic violations), this is setting up to be an exciting finish to the '15 class.

247 Target List:

QB - Brandon Wimbush (PSU commit)
RB - Soso Jamabo, Nick Brossette (LSU commit), Cameron Scarlett
TE - Aliz'e Jones (UCLA commit)
WR - Equanimeous St. Brown, Cordell Broadus
DL - Porter Gustin (DE/OLB), Christian Wilkins, Neville Gallimore, Joseph Wicker
LB - Asmar Bilal, Tevon Coney, Bo Wallace
DB - Iman Marshall, Ykili Ross, Calvin Brewton (FSU commit), Marvell Tell, Frank Buncom IV, Mook Reynolds (VT commit), Hunter Dale

Of those 21 players, two are composite 5-stars (Marshall and Gustin), 15 are composite 4-stars and four are composite 3-stars (Dale, Wallace, Scarlett and Brewton).

Check off Wimbush.

I think the commitments slow way down the rest of the season as the staff gets very picky with whomever they take. If ND beats FSU, I look for a few more elite names to be added to the list.

I bet we get at least 2 more this month. Henry/Bilal/Coney/Kirkland/Soso could all be possible October commitments IMO.

I think we're guaranteed at least one more.

Coney will commit to ND= no Kirkland

Coney will commit to Florida= offer Kirkland and expect a commitment shortly after

Yea, I feel pretty confident saying that we'll be landing 1 LB this month and Soso is also supposed to decide in October as well. However I'm less confident in that.

I posted this in Wimbush's thread on accident, it probably belongs here.

Now that Kelly is attracting more guys that fit the profiles he's looking for, the next question is how potent can this offense be? Not that he doesn't have some dynamic weapons now but can you imagine our QBs stacked 4 deep, our RBs consisting of 4 & 5 star recruits and an OL that starts the best from three consecutive recruiting classes that had top 5 talent? Our WRs continue to develop, our slot is finally giving us production.

I really think Kelly only has his machine running at 60-70%, when we pull a couple 5 stars a year and have a top 5 recruiting class for consecutive years, I think we'll realize a master has been at work.

Who would've thought we'd "out physical" Stanford with a bunch of frosh and sophomores? I don't know that we'll beat FSU but I like where we are headed.

Former Penn State quarterback commitment Brandon Wimbush flipped to Notre Dame following a surprise official visit to South Bend. Wimbush said he was solid to Penn State following numerous Stanford rumors for a couple of months, but when he took that official to Notre Dame, all bets were off.

This is a clear flexing of the recruiting muscles at Notre Dame. ND offered Wimbush after falling hard for him after evaluating senior film and then just went and plucked him from uber-recruiter James Franklin and the Nittany Lions. Wimbush has tremendous upside and will certainly help lure skill position prospects, especially wide receivers, to Notre Dame.

He could also make South Bend more interesting for his five-star teammate, cornerback Minkah Fitzpatrick, who is committed to Alabama but took an official visit to Florida State this past weekend. There was talk of Fitzpatrick heading to Notre Dame with Wimbush at the last moment, but cancelling his scheduled trip to FSU wasn't in the cards. Keep an eye on this one as Fitzpatrick visited Penn State when Wimbush was committed to the Nits.

And when it comes to the all-important quarterback position, the Irish could be setting themselves up nicely for next year as well. Class of 2016 five-star quarterback Malik Henry, who does not plan to drag out his recruiting process, has supposedly had a couple of favorites along the way, and now that honor goes to Notre Dame. He has developed a strong bond with Irish QB coach Matt LaFleur, which has helped push Notre Dame to the front. Also under consideration right now are Florida State, UCLA, USC and Ohio State, with the Seminoles and Bruins next in line. Henry will actually visit Tallahassee this fall, but it will be for the Notre Dame game, so you can be sure that he will be keeping a very close eye on both teams.

With UCLA, while some believe it is still in serious contention, it is hard to believe he will want to follow Josh Rosen, who will likely take over the starting job as a true freshman. Ohio State has quickly fallen and is unlikely to receive a visit before he makes a decision and while USC is close and has received visits, they are not keeping up with Notre Dame and Florida State. It is not clear how the Wimbush commitment affects Henry, but he has been high on Notre Dame for quite some time and that appears unlikely to change.

In addition to Wimbush, Notre Dame hosted a number of top targets for the Stanford game, including four-stars Equanimeous St. Brown and Frank Buncom IV from California, so I expect the Irish to continue to have success in Cali despite being burned a few times out west. Both recruits were already seriously considering the Irish before their visits, but now both have them at or near the top.

Buncom is likely down to the Irish and Stanford, with a visit to Palo Alto scheduled in January. However, will the Irish wait that long for him or will they try to push the issue? For St. Brown, he still has official visits planned to USC, UCLA and possibly Stanford, even though he has already been to Palo Alto on multiple occasions and may not return for an official. Originally, sources believed St. Brown would want to stay closer to home, but recently it seems like he is more open to exploring other parts of the country.

Notre Dame's quick start this season has definitely intrigued recruits from coast-to-coast, who will be keeping a close eye on how the Irish finish this season off. Despite a few bumps along the road with Deontay Greenberry, Tee Shepard, and Eddie Vanderdoes, California is a huge piece of the Notre Dame national recruiting plan.

There are so many top recruits interested in Notre Dame -- Iman Marshall, Soso Jamabo, Porter Gustin, Tevon Coney, Cameron Scarlett, Ykili Ross, Cordell Broadus and others -- that a strong finish on the field will clearly lead to a big finish in recruiting.

It was mentioned in Power Hour that ND gained positive, national recruiting momentum in 2012 up until they got dismantled by Alabama. 2013 didn't do much to help the cause. Now this year's team, after beating Stanford, is starting to turn heads again. They point to how much respect the Stanford program has out west and how those particular recruits take notice when a program like ND beats them. The same will be said after the FSU game, barring a blowout. ISD isn't convinced that losing to FSU will do much damage as long as the game is competitive. Point is, win and they will come. ND has to win games to push elite kids over the hump. They recruit well, but the best of the best don't always have ND on a short list. Winning changes that.

Bumping this just because there are questions about how many spots we have left in multiple threads.

Hayes is a possibility as well.

Good call Pops. I checked a little earlier and couldn't find much. The only thing of mention was Gorney did a article "around the west" or something like that. Where he talked about a bunch of recruitments of west coast players. Hayes came up briefly in the article about ND and Arizona getting after him but ND in a big way.
