Lol @ some comments in this thread. Sophomore Jaylon Smith is better than senior Manti Teo? How quickly some fans move on and forget what Manti Teo meant to this university. His leadership drove this team in 2012.

Jaylon is not cut out for the NFL because he's not a pass rush specialist? Shaking my head.

Good thing he has time to develop. Do people remember what development means?

Awesome, I'm sure we all voted for him. Happy to see Jaylon win and show the Notre Dame fan strength!

TP just tweeted this screen cap of Jaylon lining up at CB against UM:

How many LBs nationwide could credibly do that against a real opponent?

Odd. Perhaps he was manned on that FB-looking fella and they put him out there and he went as a result?

EDIT: annnnd I'm a half hour behind ACAMP..

Looks like one way to take our best defensive player out of the play. Easier than blocking him I guess.

Jaylon is about the same size as Kam Chancellor, and is probably faster. He may be the 2nd or 3rd best cover man on the team, so I have no problem with him at CB to give a different look to the offense.

The defense didn't line up with Jaylon on the outside like that I almost guarantee it. We were probably in a man coverage scheme with motion by the offense to take Jaylon out of the middle of the field, which would in turn benefit their offensive playcall. It is football 101, and the defensive call enabled Michigan to scheme Jaylon out of the play. It would literally not benefit the defense at all to have Jaylon line up outside like that no matter who was lined up out there.

According to the play by play, Gardner lost a yard on the play.

I remember watching this play from the stands. Jaylon obviously had man coverage so he started to head out to cover his man. Cole Luke was telling Jaylon to just stay closer to the line of scrimmage and cover the slot which is an actual receiver(not a FB/RB). Jaylon then motioned Luke to matchup with the receiver and Luke slid in to cover slot.

The offense was in this situation was designed to get the slot a mismatch with a LB. I don't think they had Jaylon in mind while scheming this play(I would think they wanted Schmidt to slide out over the slot). Regardless, he did the smart thing and communicated with Luke to alleviate the mismatch all together causing Gardner to hold the ball longer than he wanted on a 3 step drop to take advantage of the proposed slot mismatch.

This reminds me of a video I seen(I think the ICON video) where Jaylon was super excited talking with some teammates on the sideline. He was yelling like he won the lottery and at the end of the yell he blurted out "That was some great communication...Great communication"!

It's one thing to have the best athletic skills but when you combine it with the football IQ and willingness to learn as much as possible like this kid....No doubt he will be a first rounder if he stays healthy. Will do great things!

Pollack is pretty dismissive of non-SEC players too. Very telling of JS's potential/ability.

Yep...this is how it went down. And i saw him on the sidelines talking to Cody Riggs all fired up about communication. Total package...I'm starting to wonder if we hold on to him for another year.

I like Pollack and I like Herbie on gameday. Everyone else on there can blow me... Sam Ponder in particular.

That's correct.

Ehhhhhh I'm usually with you on saying the people who claim bias are being silly, but that College Gameday special on ND a few years ago was pretty damning. (The one where they put cobwebs on Jesus's face and said "the echos are dead".) It was so absurd that Fowler couldn't keep a straight face afterwards.

I loved that piece, and found it quite motivational. Been looking here and there for years for it, but never found it.

It was titled "Another season of hope at Notre Dame" and aired during BK's first year.

*50 million vbucks to anyone who finds it

They weren't really that far off.. We were pretty bad for a long stretch there. The Davie, Willingham, and most Weis years were tough to watch and truly tested your allegiance.

ESPN just saw a story connected to a ratings juggernaut and sensationalized it. They've propped us up plenty of times.

Yeah, I have to say ESPN is pretty quick to jump on the ND bandwagon when we're good. Of course they pile it on when something bad happens, just like every other outlet. Shit, Chicago Tribune loves airing dirty laundry. That being said, Desmond Howard and Mark May can both go eat a fat dick.

If I had more time, I'd do this. But I think it'd be awesome to create a twitter account that's sole purpose was to tweet out stats about ESPN's SEC homerism, and point out their 'misses' (i.e., when they pointed out LSU's 'astonishing' fact about playing so many freshman over past 5 years, but ND actually had that number crushed).
