I was at the UC game last night (and will be at all of their home games, minus one that conflicts with ND/Stanford). During the game, I was impressed with his arm strength and accuracy... kid can flat spin it, and makes it look realllllly easy.
He was staring down his receivers too much early (which didn't matter, UC goes 7/8-deep with quality WRs; Toledo was outmatched sorely), but started to check down and go through the progression later on in the second half, which was good because that was when Toledo made it interesting.
I was most impressed with his response late in the second half, after hitting the lockerroom for IV fluids. Toledo made a run, Gunner hit a cold streak. But when things got tough, Kiel caught fire again in response. Not bad for a guy with no chest.
Also, FWIW, I talked to a friend at the game that frequents the Cincy campus and hangs out with some UC players. He asked them about Kiel at a party recently, and he said the players seemed convinced that Kiel simply never settled in at ND. They said he had talked about not having many friends, and that he never really got comfortable. So while not being the starter may have played a role, it seems Gunner needed to move on for other reasons as well.
