I re-watched his game against Oklahoma. I did not realized until now how i hate the way he is used on the field. He is almost always the last man (you can not even watch him on the screen) and plays with a 15-20 yard cushion behind the LOS. It's curious because he has not much range and is not explosive in his reactions.

Do you guys think he could do more here? Call me crazy but i think Jaylon, in his position, he would tackle him

I would love to see him around the LOS as an Eric Berry type of safety, let him be aggresive and hit fellas! I think he is already a decent, maybe good safety as an centerfielder but i think he would be better playing in the box and not as a deep safety where he has too much responsibility covering the entire backfield (C1) or still covering a lot of field (C2).

The things you speak of are related to defensive scheme and coverage.

Not out of the equation for him to be Eric Berry-esque and get some blitzes, but Diaco tended to keep his safeties as "safety."

I don't think you are crazy. To me, he is another one of the casualties of Diaco's system. He was one of the guys I liked the most coming in. He definitely needs to be around the ball to excel.

I wouldn't mind seeing Shumate as the nickel back once again (where he played very well as a freshman), with Riggs playing deep next to Redfield. You could reverse those two though and I would still be happy.

Riggs has said he wants to play CB more than safety so I have to believe he will do so.

My ideal alignment for Nickle would be Russell and Luke/Riggs as CBs, then Redfield and Shumate at Safety, Luke/Riggs at nickle with Jaylon and a thumper at Will.

We could easily go man or cover 3 with Shumate dropping in to cover spread teams in the box.

He took a poor angle on that play, going under the corners/WRs in pursuit instead of behind them, and essentially let himself get blocked out. But that's a good example of why he's been misused. Like you said, the guy's not really suited to free safety. It doesn't play to his strengths, which are flying upfield and hitting like a truck.

It will be interesting to see how he and the others are really utilized by BVG.

I think Elijah will earn the starting SS job over Collinsworth by the first few games. By the time he's a senior he'll have the position locked down.

I hope you are right because it would give us our most athletic combination. Shumate and Redfield could cover a lot of ground between them. Shumate can hit hard and isn't afraid to lower the boom and gives BVG a safety made for blitzing and run support.

Let's hope we see this pair on the field a lot this year.

It helps that we also are looking better at corner this year, than we have for a long time. Set your top guy aside, we are really better deep at all defensive back position than we have been in my failing memory!

Not to say Collinsworth has lost his spot but say AC comes back for Stanford and KVR has returned, how's that impact Shumate and Farley? Could be some tough decisions if Shumate keeps growing and Farley keeps playing that kind of game

He played like he belonged out there, not just filling a spot. I like that, like it a lot. He was everywhere.

This is a great question, I think if Shumate continues to grow and play like he did on Saturday then you got to leave him in there. He was an animal on Saturday and there is no doubting his athletic ability, interested to see what they do with the corners because Luke and Riggs have done a great job in my opinion and Farley has found a niche and is playing very well so I too am very interested what BVG will do when and if these guys return

The former outcast had 6 tackles against Stanford with a 16 sack and a QBH. The sack came on the last play of the game when he nailed Hogan as he was attempting to get Stanford into game tying FG range. Shumate was a heat seeking missile and forced Hogan into a wild throw that drew a game ending grounding flag.
