I honestly don't understand why that would be a problem but playing for ND in and of itself wouldn't be. I think any kid who would have a problem with a cross on his uniform probably wouldn't be enrolling at Notre Dame in the first place.

Let's say you go to your best friends house, and he's Jewish. You love his family, so it doesn't bother you to be quiet during their meal-time prayer, and you generally respect their traditions by being silent and not attempting to cause waves.

Then one day, that family says we've changed the rules in our house, now you need to wear a Star of David and a Yamaca to eat with us.

Do you really not see a difference?

I don't like the cross idea because I think it'll be tacky. It's that simple. You don't even need to get into the religious aspect.

Exactly but the state was founded because Lord Baltimore was trying to escape religious persecution in order to practice his Catholic faith. He brought many Catholics with him. I believe Maryland (which is named after Mary) is still a very Catholic area but obviously not religiously affiliated.

Pretty sure Maryland is named after Queen Mary.

Agreed, but the main reason it's tacky is because of the religious implications of a cross.

This is the best analogy I have seen so far. Reps

I think East Carolina's logo is offensive...to butt pirates. Not all pirates carry those types of swords and look for that type of buried treasure.

I don't like the crosses either. Unless you are going to say, "We play for the Holy Cross" I think its better to leave them off then play them down as a mere cultural/historical decoration.

Pretty sure Maryland is named after Queen Mary.

Lord Baltimore pretextually claimed to be naming it after the wife of King Charles, but he was thoroughly Catholic and EVERYONE knew exaclty what he was doing. The orignal capital was named St. Mary's City.

The religious freedom in Maryland was short-lived, there were ugly persecutions, William Penn managed to wrench Deleware away from the colony, etc., etc.

Luckily, we've manged to get past all that ugliness because most everyone (catholic and Protestant) who is educated and/or influential either (1) stopped caring about religion, (2) only uses it as a flourish for social or politcal goals, (3) agrees to treat it as a completely private affair, (4) subjegates it to the prevelant culture, conceding any point that is not-PC.

Yea this is what I've been trying to say without using a good analogy like this one. Curious to see what wizards or others would think about this situation.

I would have no problem with doing that. Same God. Maybe not a good analogy after all. Better question would be... Should a Jewish player on the Notre Dame football team be exempt from wearing the cross if he were opposed to it... and the answer would be of course.

I thought all ND football players had implicitly agreed to represent Catholicism by signing up? So are we in agreement that being told to wear a cross is different from attending a group mass?

It's not implicit. It's clause 44(c) in their letter of intent.

I think Bryant "earned" one for not muffing a punt in the spring game.

Where was Goodman's visor?

Badass, too bad they cant wear these.

Can't wear those helmets with the Holy Cross anchors.... You gonna start another Holy War on here again... and heaven only knows what other kind of religious symbolism that helmet has!.

I on the other hand think that would be a killer helmet to wear for one of the SS games.
