Not the ideal scenario for Notre Dame or Sykes, but good to see both sides work it out with Indiana so this kid doesnt lose a year of eligibility.

As for the debate on Student Athletes having different requirements to get in. I think they should have different requirements and ND does do a good job of holding their Student Athletes to a higher academic bar than other schools.

Notre Dame is a business first and foremost. They are in the business to make money. There is a reason why Notre Dame has 8 billion dollars in its endowment fund. They have figured out how to make high academic expectations and high athletic expectations work.

Look at all the National Title appearances in all sports in the last 3-4 years by all sports at Notre Dame. Skylar Diggins wasnt getting into Notre Dame if she didnt play basketball. Luke Harangody wouldnt have got in either. I mean you have understand that athletics bring in millions every year, and that is huge for any division one school. Sure, Football/Basketball help support the other sports like Fencing/Rowing/etc. But it allows kids to get a great education on scholarship in the lesser known sports.

You need student athletes on a campus to add excitement for the rest of the students. Sporting events are something that builds bonds and leads to the college experience.

You need JimmyMacs on campus to continue the academic prestige of the university and to make Notre Dame unique.

The success that student athletes room with non student athletes shows Notre Dame has a phenomenal grasp of what they are doing. Sure, there are some students that dont get in over a student athlete, but that student athlete benefits Notre Dame financially. And in the big picture, thats what it is all about like it or not.

NEED MOAR JIMMYMACS!

Glad to see Nile end up at IU with full eligibility. It's not ND, but it's one of the better respected publics in the country. He can do well there and get a great education.

good luck to him.

hope this doesn't bite us in the rear in the short term and long term, but happy for the kid either way that he gets to play and possibly right away in bloomington

I am glad things worked out semi ok with Niles.... He didn't get completely screwed and I am glad ND was able to work with him to let him out of his letter of intent

"...Sykes’ transfer out of Notre Dame was not compulsory for any reason and he could have remained with the program."

can everyone take a deep breath now in attacking ND?

kid left on his own

Total bullshit. It's sad that people actually believe you're getting the full story from ND on any of these transfers.

Tee left for health reasons... nope. Neal left to be close to home... nope. And on and on.

I do not know why he is leaving and i do not care but Indiana is switching to a 34 defense this year so maybe he really was seeking a school that is a better fit for him.

That is one strong possibility. Thanks for that information!

Two different ideas need to be separated in a sentence. If they are independent, complete by themselves, a semi-colon is best. Dependent or "and," feel free to use a comma.

When usin a team or school like "Indiana" as a noun, it remains singular. You would use is instead of are.

I don't know who taught you sentence structure (or when you were taught for that matter), but I was taught a comma is used before a conjunction, not a semicolon.

Semicolons are hardly ever used; they typically only appear between two independent clauses that share a theme or idea that are not joined by a conjunction.

OK, Beau, and for the sake of clarity, would not "... a comma, not a semicolon, is used." have been a better sentence construction?

I've been "schooled" on the Oxford Comma, so I now know, respect, and adhere to the dogma when sober.

Is there a Cambridge Semicolon commandment to which I'm not privy?

A period will do in a pinch when undecided, should it come down to a question of "semicolon or comma?"

Go with the flow. Just self-proofread critically to ensure that no unintended ambiguity exists. Intentional ambiguity; carefully crafted, is acceptable.

Same. Definitely will root for him at Indiana. They should make a bowl this year and seem to be somewhat on the rise under Wilson. Not a bad spot for him to end up.

I wanted to rep you, but it says I need to spread some around first, so I must have repped you recently, because "...when sober" made me laugh really hard!

SweetCurtis:
I have no clue as to the parameters and rules of giving and spreading reps. I just slog and slurp on.

Thanks.

I'll be (somewhat) in your neck of the woods next week. I'll be hanging out with my brother and his family, who will be coming and going at one time or another, on Big Moose Lake in the Adirondacks near Eagle Bay.

I'll raise my glass in your honor.

I'm sure that I'll have many, many honors for which to raise my glass ...

Indiana has had an very explosive offense for the past couple years, but their defense always blows up. IU's biggest issue is defensive backs, they gave up big pass play after big pass play. If IU could muster a decent defense, they would actually be pretty dangerous this year... in the B1G.

So TP what's the scoop. What happened here with Sykes? Seniorites?

Nothing that I feel comfortable posting bc Sykes hasnt said anything. If/When he speaks about it, then I will. But he has chosen to remain silent to this point.

The schools can say what they need to, and I understand that. But, as I have always been, I am not going to run out and state certain situations whether good or bad if that specific player hasnt said anything. There are something for whatever reason that arent supposed to get out unless that kid wants it out.

As for Sykes, I know he loves Notre Dame and still loves Notre Dame. He was happy for his friend Miles Boykin to commit, and I truly believe he is leaving with good terms. Notre Dame releasing his LOI speaks volumes and I honesly feel he will have a great career at Indiana.

I can assure you he didnt leave because he was scared of the depth chart or couldnt play at the level Notre Dame plays at. The scheme at Indiana probably fits him a lot better than the Notre Dame scheme, so it may be a blessing in disguise for him on the football side of it. Great kid, great personality, highly motivated kid, and I would take 5 Nile Sykes' each class.

I am not saying this is what happend

But does anyone else think Nile just looked at the depth chart or the switch to the 4-3 defense and maybe just said this isn't for me? That is what others are suggesting but I am just wondering if it's not academics then could this be it?

Or maybe we just pulled a Bama and cut him.

Neither of those. Come on dude. Guy is all-ND, wanted the offer bad, knew the same depth chart and DC when he signed. Had nothing but the right attitude in his short stint on campus and then had the rug pulled out from under him.

We won't ever have the specifics in a formal press release or report... whether it was a class, test scores, or something he did after enrolling or whatever... but it wasn't "fit" and was academic.

This was in the rivals article so don't think its me just saying this kind of stuff. I didn't even say this is what I think happen. I am just saying what others are saying. This was posted by Pete Sampson who knows what happen and he pointed this out in this article

"In Bloomington, Sykes becomes the Hoosiers’ top-rated linebacker prospect. Rated as a high three-star (5.7 Rivals Rating) coming out of Montini Catholic, Sykes will be a rarity at Indiana. The Hoosiers have signed just one 5.7-rated linebacker in the past four recruiting cycles. That’s incoming freshman Tegray Scales.

In South Bend, Sykes faced a much higher hurdle. He likely would have been stuck behind Jaylon Smith at the will linebacker position or fallen behind incoming freshman Nyles Morgan at the mike. That’s in addition to fighting Joe Schmidt, Jarrett Grace, Kolin Hill, Michael Deeb and/or Doug Randolph for reps, depending on his position."
