What's lost in this is that USC is about to be a monster again, FSU is the #1 team in the country, and Stanford is only going up.
I don't think people realize how good USC is about to be, assuming Sark isn't a total idiot. They're getting everyone they want, and the scholarship reductions are about to become a non factor. They're going to be a NFL factory from now until 2020 if I had to guess.
Yes, USC is certainly primed to take a step back up on the national stage, but it will probably take a year...maybe two for them to get there. They still have a lot of holes in their trenches, they didn't recruit well there during sanctions. It takes time to breed an OL, which is great that Heistand has been pulling in studs for us for awhile now. You're right though, if Sark isn't a total idiot, USC should do well in the coming years...but I don't think he'll achieve Cheaty Petey greatness.
I don't see FSU going on a dominant run. They'll dominate their division in the ACC for sure, but I expect them to be up and down and getting to the playoff once every 3rd year or so. I think Jimbo is a decent coach, but not necessarily an elite coach. I mean, we almost beat him in 2011 with a bunch of rookies and Tommy Rees...let that sink in.
However, Stanford is only going up? I don't see it. I think they can't possibly go much higher. They've had some regular trips to the Rose Bowl, Orange Bowl, and Fiesta including some wins. The only way they could do more is hitting the NCG, and I just don't see that happening. They're replacing some very good players and leaders on defense this year, and theres other holes there. Eventually Stanford will falter a bit. In fact, maybe they already have since they had 3 losses last year (First time since '09). The PAC-12 North still has Oregon, they're not going anywhere yet. Washington improved under Sark, and it's possible they'll continue that trend under Petersen. Mike Leach isn't a bad coach, and it's not unfathomable that Washington State couldn't continue to improve...he did take them to their first bowl game since 2003 last year. I don't seriously expect Washington State to knock off Stanford this year, but Leach could pull an upset sometime in the near future. My point is, I think Stanford will hang around for maybe another year or two, then I expect more 3-5 loss seasons coming....and Shaw will probably be gone to a better job which will help get that ball rolling.
