I'm assuming italics?

Not at all. In the opening highlight he clearly has a cast on the right arm only but later at 0:30 he looks double casted and you can really tell in the highlight starting at 2:36 and pause on 2:41 it looks like he was playing a game or two with casts on each arm.

I know its not an earth shattering analysis or observation but I found it interesting. He definitely doesn't play soft.

uhm… i'm pretty sure those are arm pads. haha

Since he plays so many positions, including QB, it's pretty important to keep his hands and arms protected.

He broke his right thumb in week 5 and then broke his left hand in the first round of the playoffs. He played the following week with a cast. So, definitely not arm pads. Do kids even wear those any more?

Also, the article I read said he plans to take a LDS mission and won't be available until 2017. Obviously that can change, but it's a piece of info I haven't seen posted.

Touche'. I figured they were just protecting his arms. My apologies, irishnight

If a kid has any type of injury or risk, it seems they put them in those pads still. I still see it plenty in my neck of the woods.

Interesting note on the mission. I was wondering about that earlier. This kid a BYU lock?

One of the articles said he met with BYU in December and would have committed on the spot, but they told him they were full at LB. He has since dropped them. Seems to be an incredibly idiotic move by BYU, especially considering he wouldn't be on campus until 2017.

As others have said, I like him best at DE as I think he'll outgrow the LB position. I think he would also excel at TE. The LDS mission has me spooked though.

Edit: This may help explain why BYU didn't offer: 2 Salem Hills football players suspended in alleged hazing incident | Deseret News . Apparently he was involved.

Good info. Thanks 247.

I said this with Badger, and i'll say it here… I don't want a kid that is going on mission. It separates them from the needs of the program and frankly… football for too long. It may work for BYU, but where else does it work? What other school is getting good results from kids returning from mission? I don't believe that we have the proper structure to put these kids in a position to succeed once they return.

Give me Manti… BYU can keep Chris Badger (no offense to him, I wish him well at BYU).

If you look at the pic in the OP bio, it looks like he has a cast on his left arm.

Edit: reps for posting a pic of the old school 80s arm pads though.

Hey, we had those in the 70's.

Seriously, we could wear them, but I never did in practice. If fact we had a brick wall I used to smack my forearms and knuckles against. Made them tougher.

Used them in games occasionally to deliver messages.

There needs to be some due diligence with this kid, but his talent speaks for itself. Kid can reek havoc.

From TJ regarding Porter.

He's very interested in us and we are interested in and completing our initial evaluation of him. Would expect something to be in the works shortly.

Classic BK "Big Skill Athlete" here at 6-4ish, 235 or so, with good length and a thick kid. Very intriguing as a Rush DE prospect, or maybe OLB, for our new schemes on defense. Also some interest in TE possibly from that side of the staff. Plays QB on offense currently!

He's LDS and a likely Mission kid. Family appreciates ND football tradition and opportunities, and the manner in which we supported Manti as one of ours and as a Mormon.

Badger is the only LDS recruit who has postponed his Irish debut for a mission, right? You may be correct, but a sample size of one isn't very reliable. Also, not every mission involves a 3rd world country and poor nutrition.

Let's be honest. A second hand nutrition and S/C program in Kenya would be 12x better than being stuck in Longo's mud for 2 years.

Went back and forth on the italics. No italics.

I just don't like keeping the scholly tied up while they get as far as away from football as possible for two years. Then come back and try to pick up where they started.

While our sample size is indeed short with Badger, I believe that is what we should expect in the future. There is a reason these kids are pretty much focused on getting better at football from their freshman year until college. While BYU and Utah (to an extent) are fundamentally better suited to help mission returning kids succeed, a lot of them still end up failing there too. I really can't think of any mormon kid outside of BYU/Utah that went on to a tremendous career after their mission. I'm sure there is one out there... but I can't think of him.

Let's look at the non-mission mormons in the NFL for instance:

- Ezekiel “Ziggy” Ansah/BYU
- Jordan Cameron/USC
- Stanley Havili/Stanford
- Todd Heap/ASU
- Manti Teo/ND
- Star Lotulelei/Utah
- Brett Keisel/BYU
- Fili Moala/USC
- Haloti Ngata/Oregon

Now let's look at the known NFL guys (just ones I found, someone can add) that did well after a mission.

- Austin Collie/BYU
- John Beck/BYU
- Paul Kruger/Utah
- Dennis Pitta/BYU

It honestly was pretty hard to find known names of guys that did missions. As you can see, the ones I could find all resided in Utah. Not only are the biggest mormon names in the NFL not mission takers, but most of them left the state to play football.

I think there's merit to both sides of the debate. Can the program and university provide the support and proper structure to handle kids once they return from a mission? Yes, I believe so, even in the absence of a reliable sample size. Just because it didn't work out for Badger doesn't mean it won't work out for other players. That situation had more factors than simply Badger going on a mission and / or ND's ability to provide Badger with a proper transition.

But I also agree that mission kids are not preferred, personally. In most cases, it's not in their best interest from a football development standpoint and has a negative impact in this regard. Of course there are success stories, but, AS A FAN, I'd prefer our guys enter the university on schedule and immediately begin their football and academic careers.

I don't think student-athletes who plan on taking a mission are untouchable, simply for the fact that many players, including guys like Manti, plan on taking a mission and change their mind before following through with it. I would guess that a large percentage of FBS LDS recruits fall into this category with a smaller number actually following through on their mission plans.

If I were calling the shots at ND, I'd continue to recruit Porter (assuming everything else checks out), but I wouldn't be happy with him delaying his enrollment and taking a two-year mission. He's probably a take either way, but that doesn't mean I'd be happy with it.

As for the scholarship numbers, are we positive a LDS student-athlete counts towards the 85 while they are away on a mission? I think I recall Badger counting against the numbers, but I'm not sure.

Being that last year there were less than 100 players in the FBS that returned from missions, and a very low number of them were high star recruits (meaning who knows if they would've outperformed their incoming rating either way). It's very hard to form an opinion on whether or not it is bad to accept a recruit that takes this path.

Huge move up the rankings

Top247 update: Kyler Murray climbs in the five-star ranks

Porter Gustin, Salem (Utah) Salem Hills, OLB

The biggest jump in the latest update is Gustin. The U.S. Army All-American has been landing offers from all over the country and could play linebacker, defensive end, tight end or quarterback on the next level. He’s 6-foot-5, 225 pounds and is one of the most unique athletes in this 2015 class. Though he played hurt much of his junior year, Gustin put together impressive film and he has checked out from a size standpoint. Gustin is very much within striking distance of a fifth star.

This is bad, because they're only kids, but I can't help falling out laughing every time I watch this maniac's highlights. He just folds the ball carriers up like a frickin chair.

That said, the mission possibility is a big consideration. We'll see what happens.

why does this kid not have an offer?

Putting together three different pieces, due diligence. They are checking some things out that may or may not include a past personal incident, past injury(ies), and likelihood of the kids interrupting college with an LDS Mission.

This is not confirmed right? I thought we were just speculating this.

Sorry Bogs. The LDS mission has been confirmed. The other two you mentioned, I believe, have not.

Okay. Someone asked what could be holding up an offer. I was answering what had been speculated in the thread. Not anything about what had been confirmed. Someone earlier speculated that Porter had a little personal issue. I have no knowledge, but it was stated. Someone speculated that it could have been a mission. So I stated that, speculation of injuries being a problem, and so on.

So the reasons are pure board speculation. But the fact that it seems to be due diligence holding up the kids offer seems to be accurate, (i.e., the only reason he wouldn't have an offer.)
